Sidearms--Who here carries a pistol while predator hunting, and what kind?

Kahr P9 9mm. Small enough and light enough for my cargo pocket or jacket pocket. It always goes on my lap when hunting coyotes. I've never gotten a shot off with it yet, my darn 223 is too effective! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I hope to use it on a close dog some day.

I sometimes carry my Heritage Mfg Rough Rider single action six shooter. I put the .22mag cylinder in it but at the range that I'd actually shoot it the .22LR would do just fine.
Purely a 'finishing shot' weapon.

I was close to buying a Taurus .357 seven shot revolver from a girlfriend to get into handgun hunting big game and predators, but we broke up before I scored it. I've never been handgun hunting.

I pretty much carry my Glock 29 10mm everywhere I go whether hunting or not. In the summer I’ll drop down to the Kahr K9 9mm because it’s easier to carry. If I’m just hoping in the truck for a quick run to the store, I’ll just drop the S&W model 60 .38 into my pocket.

I have a ccw, but rarely carry a handgun when hunting - never saw a real need if I have a rifle or shotgun. Besides, there is a limit to how much I want to lug around! When I do carry a handgun while hunting, it is either a .22 Colt revolver or a Bersa .380 a.c.p.

Here in Pa. we were not allowed to carry a sidearm while hunting unless it was something we were allowed to hunt WITH, or using a 22 cal revolver or single shot to dispatch trapped animals... but the hunting WITH part only allowed revolvers, not semi-automatic handguns. In November, our illustrious liberal Governor, who surprised EVERYONE, signed a bill which will take effect January 29th, which will allow Concealed Carry Permit holders in Pa. to be able to carry their self protection firearms WHILE hunting. They cannot be used, however, for hunting or harvesting game.......just for protection, so that means my Sigma .40 cal. can be on my side while looking for those furry things......

Lots of great replies--The gun pictures are great.

I found this interesting:

Excerpt from the Minnesota 2006 Hunting Regulations:

"Handguns
Persons age 18 or older may carry a handgun in the woods and
fields or upon waters to hunt or target shoot. Persons under age 18 may carry handguns for hunting if in the actual presence or under the direct supervision of the person’s parent or guardian, and if they meet
firearms safety requirements (see page 20).

A person may not carry a hand gun while bowhunting except a person may take bear by archery while in possession of a firearm.

Questions regarding handguns
should be directed to local lawenforcement authorities.

The “Concealed carry” provisions apply to certain hunting activities. Persons with a permit under this law generally may carry their handguns uncased and loaded while hunting, and while traveling to or from hunting locations by motor vehicle under the hunting firearms
transportation laws.

However, possession of the handgun while 'shining' or while hunting deer by archery would still subject the possessor
to the provisions of these laws (see page 33, artificial lights, for more info).

UNPROTECTED ANIMALS
Residents are not required to have a license to take unprotected species.

Unprotected Mammals
Weasels, coyotes, gophers, porcupines, striped skunks, and all other mammals for which there are no closed seasons or other protection are unprotected animals. They may be taken in any manner, except with the aid of artificial lights or by using a motor vehicle to drive, chase, run over, or kill the animal. Poisons may not be used except in accordance with all label regulations of the state Dept. of
Agriculture and federal Environmental Protection Agency."

You might be suprised how little the S&W 500 kicks, not that it pussycat but its not that bad. It does however have one hell of a blast, it you are close enough and miss with the bullet you'll for sure leave what ever you are shooting at with 3rd degree burns, and you'll both end up deaf, lol.

I end up with the pistol range to myself when I take my 500 out.I just thought it was because I smelled bad. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sig 229 .40 S&W

Small enough (3.8" barrel) with plenty of "punch"!

Finished a Coyote with it last year. Dropped him with 3rd round from 870 (and didn't have any more 00 in my vest).

I was helping a cattle rancher with his Coyote problems, and was more concerned with the "kill" than the "fur".

I also didn't want to get bitten... Two to the chest (from 20') and one to the head (up close and personal). The hide was only useful for "straining pasta", but he didn't get back up again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Now, I carry extra shotgun shells... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

One of my Ruger 44 Mags or one of my Glock .45's I have carried a .22 semi auto's and revolvers in the past but found that when I needed a pistol the .22 was just not enough

Almost always. Frequently a 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk .357, I have one in both 4 5/8" (handy) and 6 1/2" (extremely accurate). If deer hunting, it's one of those or a similar Ruger .44 mag, I have several of those to choose from. 22s are great also but honestly I find myself just shooting .38 wadcutters or mildly loaded 158 gr. cast SWCs in the .357s a lot if I don't need much power, and the .38s are a lot more effective than .22 LR.

Gotta luv Uncle Eddie. While I never tried to take game with my pistol, I carried it while hunting, regardless of the law. After all, there are "deer Jacker's", and many many meth lab's in the county I hunt. Better to be safe than sorry, IMHO.

I used to just carry a walther p22 to finish off coyotes. I recently had the ^%#@ scared out of me by a 200lb sow. Now I carry an XD in 357 sig too.

Most of the time I have my Kimber 1911 .45 Stainless Classic which is my daily carry piece but occasionally I will carry my S&W 657 7.5" .41 mag in country where the big critters live. If I carry a rimfire I have a Marvel .22lr conversion for a 1911 that I leave on a Caspian frame that shoots great.

I carry a glock 27 every day, everywhere. To answer the question, I wouldn't go out at night without a sidearm. I hunt alone alot and you never know what you'll run into in the middle of the night.

Of course, I carry protection from the 2-legged variety of dangerous game. We don't have any of the 4-legged variety /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Not allowed to carry sidearms out here in Alberta. Only allowed at the "range", which makes us Canadians very jealous with what you guys can use.
