Silly coyote hunting laws

The legality and practicality of night hunting is very unclear here in NM. I'd like to see clear statutes and regulations regarding the use of lights, night vision, and thermal for hunting coyotes on public land.

Coyotes aren't a protected species in NM, so there is no season and thus we cannot specifically hunt them on state land. We can only hunt coyotes on state land while we are there hunting for a protected species for which there is an open season and for which we have a license. So we can whack a coyote on state ground while bobcat or fox hunting, or while deer hunting, or dove hunting, but we can't go out in the spring or summer and call only coyotes.

Aside from those two issues, coyote hunters have a pretty good deal going here. No season, no bag limit, virtually no restrictions when day hunting. It's even legal to shoot one out of the truck so long as everything else about the situation is safe.

This above, plus a shotgun must be plugged to only accept three total shells (2 +1). Centerfire rifles are restricted to 10 + 1. Silly...
This. I came out here from Indiana and this is my biggest problem with Missouri. Legally shoot all night if you want, just don't you dare plan on seeing what you're shooting at. And day hunting isn't all that productive here either.

Good question! I guess the moon?

Night Vision scope. Also on another note. I am pretty new to fox- predator hunting. I really started when we found Fox carry a disease that can damage cattle reproductive sytems

( yes, I own cattle). Thats when i got REAL serious. Coyotes also carry it.
Any tips for me? Now i pretty much call for 1 night. then come back about 3 nights later so the fox won't be suspicuous. But i always get an adrenaline rush when one comes in, but the main problem i have is "Waiting for the best shot"

Since Mass. has a "no light law" I asked this question of one of the Wildlife Board members. He told me I should buy a night vision scope.

22lr, shotgun, or a pistol no bigger than a .38. Also, it's not the diameter of the bullet, but the length of the case. So, a .357 is illegal. One EPO said she would give out a ticket if she found you even using a flashlight.

Furbearers and coyotes may be taken at night, but use of artificial light, including optics that project or amplify light, is prohibited. However, hand-held, battery-powered flashlights, hat lamps, or hand-held lanterns may be used to take trapped furbearers, trapped coyotes, or furbearers treed by dogs with .17 and .22 rimfire rifles and handguns.

This is from their website.^^ Never got in any trouble for driving around with my tailgate down, I just know its illegal to have dead coyotes in plain sight of the public.

All things considered Cali. isn't that bad no caliber restrictions but no suppressors. some goffy light regs. no light areas, 6,9, and 12 volt light areas. some areas you can have a weapon mounted light and others you can't. No shooting from a vehicle mounted platform. And no night vision.

I agree. MO is a HUGE letdown. I own almost 500 acres and can't hunt coyotes at night. I came here from IL which allows night vision, thermal, and has a dedicated 4 month 24/7 season. The personal protection gun laws in MO are great, the hunting laws-not so much, unless you are a deer or turkey hunter, neither of which I care about. They close predator hunting during spring turkey season, some say so the coyotes can give birth, some say to protect turkey hunters. Really? On my private land? Oh, and you can only hunt turkeys till 1:00 PM instead of till legal hunting light. MO sucks. Saddest part is, there are people who live here who think this is OK. Me? My property is for sale.

I miss being able to hunt predators at night with artificial light in Wyoming. It's still legal with written permission from the landowner (or lands under their control, i.e. ranch manager), but the old days of wandering about on public lands have long been over. It's understandable, but a lot of folks don't understand that the law has little to do with safety and nothing to do with coyotes.

Charlie, One of the few times it pays to be from good old Illinois
Might be able to hang a can on my night rig in a year or 2 MAYBE !

Here during firearms deer season you are not allowed to hunt with a centerfire rifle unless you have a valid deer tag for the unit you are in.

No spotlighting from vehicles or with lights plugged into the vehicle.

Ontario, Canuckistan.
Limited to 5 rounds of centrefire ammunition (No centerfire magazines with over 5 rounds at all)
Shotguns while hunting 1+2
.22s while hunting 10 rounds (25 rounder's available for targets but the liberals are outlawing them RN)
Dogs? Yes
Coyotes all year!
Bait? Yes
Night hunting? Nowhere in Canada that I am aware of.
Night vision? You can buy it at the store, but unless you wanna bird watch for bats than well..
Handgun hunting? I wish, see Night Hunting
Suppressors? see Night Hunting
AR's and handguns (Handguns limited to 10 rounds)? Only at the Range

By the sounds of it I'm moving down south!
