Southern Utah Coyotes

Any luck as of late, been pretty slow. I have called a couple in but keep getting busted so just more educated Coyotes, hate that. Anybody else having any luck recently?

I have an uncalled, with a high population of coyotes area to call, finally decided to go call it and there was a late cow elk hunt that just ended there were 2 big gut piles that they had worked over, even a lion got involved with it! Calling was bad because they all had full bellies, I guess. I went in when it was just about daylight, I figured they were probably on the pile when I walked in.

I also tried a new area that I recently acquired permission to hunt. Went in and setup called for half an hour, with turkey distress (seen turkey tracks on the way in)and the rabbit and some howls. Nothing, I then decided to wait and call after dark, while I was up higher overlooking the same area about 20 min's later, just for fun I lightly blew a rabbit squall with little or no effort to make a decent sound. I also blew it very soft. Well I got an answer right away, a coyote howled about 500 yards of in the distance. I had left the gun in my truck and had the camera to get some pictures of the deer around there and so I just waited for a bit hit the call again in the same manner and he barked closer, but I never seen him or heard from him again. I figured he was around 2 to 3 hundred yards away still. Just can not get it to work out latley!

Thursday morning I had a pair of coyotes run right up to the Foxpro. One of them tried to bite the feathers that I had placed as a decoy. Yesterday, I came across two other vehicles that were calling in the same area I was at. At one point there were coyotes howling between me and another caller that was setup about 1 1/2-2 miles away. I didn't know he was going to setup where he did and apparently he didn't know where I was at. There are so many people calling and shooting at coyotes around here that the coyotes are very wary.

You guys sure your not in Nevada,lol...Sounds like hunting here.Lots of callers and a lot of educated dogs. I may take my buddy Ron's advice and get me a Kalifornica license and go kill some dogs with him...NVWalt

Things have slowed way down up north too. My last four days of calling, coyotes killed have been 1, 2, 1 and finally my first day of the season getting skunked day before yesterday was a 0. Actually gave up on the coyotes two days ago, after just getting howled at all morning and spent the afternoon popping jackrabbits - got about 50 of them in 3 hours, good practice and good fun.

It always gets slow for me starting sometime in December. Up until the end of Nov. I was averaging about 4 a day killed for the year. Hard to find coyotes that haven't been called to a bunch already by now.

For every one person you know that hunts Coyotes there are 50 others that you don't know doing it as well.

Every pissed off Chukar hunter becomes a Coyote hunter at the end of the day.

One of the problems in this day and age is that because of work schedules there is someone able to be in the field every day of the week.

Tough! with all the new fox pros out there. After the new snow on Monday, the day after there were fresh vehicle tracks on almost every road.
I actually overheard two coyotes talking (howling) to each other, I understand howling language so well they were making fun of lighting jack and all his other dying rabbit buddies.

Before someone out there attacks me I must tell you I'm kinda only kidding. But only about being able to understand the howling language.

DAA, 4 a day is a lot of coyotes. How many days a week do you hunt? I gotta tell ya my hat is off to you that's a good record. I thought I've killed a bunch this year but not even close to what you do. I have a goal of 50 from April to April and may achieve that. Although I have only got one (yesterday) in the last six weeks cause of my surgery, I hunted hard all day Friday, good area good set ups and didn't call in a one. Weird! I guess that's coyote huntin?
you must have hundreds down in the last few months. Congrats

I was thinking the same thing.

Too funny. I didn't even notice the necrophilia.

I'd like to think you really misunderstood me that badly and aren't trying to be a jerk.

But I've only hunted 11 days this season so far. I'm at 30 for the year, so not quite 3 a day right now. At the end of Nov. I had only hunted 7 days and had killed 26, so almost 4 a day to that point. Better than most years for the average per day, but not a very good year for number of days hunted. I missed out on all of Oct. this year.

I typically hunt from sometime in Oct. to sometime in Feb. In recent years, usually only hunt about 20 days total (it used to be a lot more...). And usually end up somewhere between 1.5 and 2 coyotes a day overall for the whole season. Not counting any of my partners coyotes, of course.

Had a couple really good days in Nov. this year (best day I killed 7 and my partner killed 3), that have my daily average looking pretty good so far and considering I'll probably only hunt another 2 or 3 days this year it will probably end up higher than usual at the end too. But still low on days hunted and not very high on total coyotes.

Pretty garden variety numbers. Nothing special.

DAA I'm not sure you were talking about me being a jerk, I was sincere I hunt a lot of days, but understanding more about what you do makes sense. Many of my hunt days are only a single stand or two pretty close to home. It's pretty rare that I take a whole day in new ears territory. Most my hunt days are not in prime areas. I'm from Utah too and face probably the same challenges in some of the same areas you do. Killing that many coyotes, you still have my respect. In fact anyone who goes out to hunt coyotes and brings one home, is still high on the list.
I have had days I should have killed four or five but I only have my bad shooting to blame. Should have had a triple one day but got excited and had shotgun troubles (only got one). Another day took my 6 year old grandson killed three in two hours of hunting, one was a double, that was highly unusual for me and probably spoiled him.

Buy the way that ten coyote day is a good day. Genuinely congrats I mean it!
