Looking for a spotting scope for under 300. I understand with optics you get what you put in, but is there much difference between 150, 200, and a 300 dollar scopes. I need to be able to see 22 holes at 300 yards and occasionally 600. So what do you suggest?

Thanks guys.

The difference in quality in $100-$200 and $300 scopes isnt going to amount to much at all.

To see .25 diameter holes at 300 yards...that shouldnt cost you anymore than about...pure guesswork here now....about $2800 or so. ( That aint a misprint either) To see them at 600 yards would only set ya back about $6000.

You think Im kidding...lol

I know you aren't kidding. I have a cheap red field that my dad got. I can see very poorly at 300 with it, but I can see the holes...sometimes. I would like to not have to strain to see them. Figured sering at 600 wouldn't be realistic. Maybe with the splatter targets.

I think your gonna be hard pressed to find what your looking for in that price range. You might try looking at Konus spotters, VERY nice glass for decent money.

Use bright white target backers. The contrast with the black holes makes them 10x easier to spot. I did it once with copy paper when I had nothing else, now I won't go back.

If you can see a bullet hole in a paper target at 300 YARDS with that spotting scope...KEEP IT...its 1 in a million!!!!

That was the plan. But the current scope's focus knob is busted and the optics are fuzzy. I know I'm not going to get top shelf optics, just wondering if I got a $300 scope would it be any different than one that was $200.

I use a Burris hi-country 15-45x spotter. I think I got it for ~$200 of flea bay. I can see 22 cal holes a 300. I also like the shoot n see targets. Especially at that range. $2800 for a spotter. Come on!

I have a Nikon and don't recall what I paid, but I know I didn't break the bank. I only shoot clays, steel, or shoot-n-see targets so I make it easier to see (or hear) what's going on.

Good luck David.

What a sack of horse crap - man you love to listen to yourself pontificate about stuff you know absolutely nothing about. You just make it up as you go.

If I'm going to spend big bucks on optics it would be on my gun. My scope on 18x I can see my shots on my dirty bird target. Just not as well as I would like.

How is that burris holding up, one review I read said that his broke in half...might of been dropped or something though.

I have had it a few years and it is holding up well. I have stopes min a couple of times but I also leave the soft sided case on at all times. Still works for me. The Utah mountains haven't torn it up too bad. WELL worth the $110 they are going for now.

Whitey21, Check out the Redfield 20-60x that is apparently a recent release...

I just pick up one and gave it a little work out at the range last Monday....
Quote:Went to the range this morning, trying to sight in a couple of rifles and try out my new Redfield Spotting Scope...I have to say, for the price, I'm really impressed with the clarity and quality....

Being my normal clutsy self, I managed to knock it off of the concrete shooting bench, onto he concrete deck, and all I could get to go through my mind was,,,,"First time out and I've probably done some serious damage"...Not so,,,The padded case that surrounds it, protected it nicely and other than a small amount of dust on the side of the case, you would never know anything out of the ordinary happened...

Now, to some of the specifics,,,,I initially was zeroing the rifles at 100 and had no problem seeing the index lines on the target, in order to know how may inches to make adjustments...

Due to other problems, I didn't get to shoot past that point, but was able to watch another couple of shooters down the line working out their targets and had no problem seeing the bullet holes from a 22-250 at 200 yards, or the bullets from a .308 at 300 and 600 yards, as long as the bullets didn't get into the black at 600...I was able to count the larger pebbles at the base of the 600 yard berm..Notice that I said pebbles, and not "rock" sized stones...Those that were about 1.5"..

The scope is easy to adjust, but does need to be re-focused as you move through the power range, for the most clarity..

For those looking for a spotting scope in the more affordable range, I would recommend this one in a heartbeat...

For $229, I think I got a good buy on it and for a spotter under $300, I would heartily recommend it to anyone..

You can say whatever you want to because you are the proclaimed EXPERT in everything...

Ive been around and using optics in one for or another for 42 years...so you arent going to tell me a thing.

BTW "Mr. Expert"...I HAVE that Pentax 80 with ED glass..and that price of $799...dont even include the EYEPIECE thats another $300. As I said...you cant tell me squat

Shooting "hoot-N-See targets that splash out to 3/4" marks IS NOT seeing .22-.25 HOLES at 300 yards.

The FINE crosshairs in a varmint scope subtend an angle of ".1 mos" which is ".100 at 100 yards"...thusly its ".3 at 300 yards". If that would COVER a .22-.25 hole at 300...how do you expect to see a similiar sized hole with a spotter that doesnt have at least the same resolution? Again..Im not talking Shoot-N-See splashes

Taken right from the indicated pages by Mr Perfect..

"PRODUCTS TESTED: Pentax 80ED ($799), Pentax 100ED ($1599), Zeiss 85mm Diascope ($1359)
(Street Prices for body only--no eyepiece. Many vendors include a 20-60x name-brand eyepiece for $200-$300 extra.)"

Whitey21....I told you I wasnt kidding. Go and read the indicated site about resolving power...etc..etc..quality of glass...and so on...and then YOU come back and tell ALL OF US..how much $$ it costs to see what you wish to see at 300 yds and more

No one can tell you squat!

I have never had the shoot n see splash 3/4" of an inch like you say. Maybe your 47 years hasn't been nice on your eyes. My Burris combined with 20/15 vision let's me see 22 cal holes at 300. I realize you probably think I am young and dumb, but oh well. I'd rather be considered that than old and grumpy with unfounded and rediculas statements.

Give this place a call....http://www.eagleoptics.com/binoculars?gcid=S31842x001&keyword=eagle%20optics&gclid=CIrt38-c0akCFYS8Kgod2QfbNw...

and tell THEM that you want a brand and price on a spotting scope so you can see 22 cal bulllet holes in a white target at 600yds...and see what they tell you.

My vison after operations is 20/12 1/2. Hit a splash taget good and hard then THEN put a circle template on it and see just how large the splash really is.

I know what I know and what Ive seen. The rest is magic in some peoples minds
