Sturgis 2015 (pic heavy)

I know there are a few that ride on here and might be a few that would appreciate even if not so I thought I would share.
My wife and I have both ridden Harleys for years. We've managed to travel a little here and there on the bikes but usually its me who takes a long(ish) bike trip every summer. This year she informed me that she wanted to ride her bike to Sturgis. We've never been to Sturgis ourselves but it just so happens we have some family and close friends who go every year. So the plans we made and penny pinching started in the Spring. All summer the anticipation has been building for this trip and I kept thinking that something would happen to keep us from going. We traveled through some beautiful country there and back..The sand hills of Nebraska, South Dakota plains, Black Hills, Badlands, Wyoming, Eastern Colorado, western Kansas. I really couldn't help it, I kept thinking I'd love to hunt here...Which was everywhere! You fellas up North have some great grounds to hunt on and there were places I must make it back to someday.
BTW, my wife made it! She rode her bike there and back and only rode with me on the scenic rides so we could take it all in together and talking about it as we were going down the road. I doubt she'll ever know just how proud of her I am.

We quickly got our camp set up so we could relax a bit before heading downtown

First Evening downtown, Even the seasoned people said it was more crowded than normal.

Now downtown was great and there are many different kinds of people but this is what I came for!

Was the #10 saloon still open? Used to be a good drinking bar. The time to head out to the hils is in November and chase some deer.
Looks like you had fun!

Came through there Monday. Never saw so many bikes. Bikes for miles in every direction. Not one motel room west of the Mississippi.Every biker I encountered was very polite. The ones I encountered just wanted to ride, but it was early in the week.Looks like we may have passed each other somewhere who knows.

It's a good possibility we shared the same road at some point. My wife and I were reflecting on our trip and people we encountered and we agreed we didn't notice anyone in the thousands of people we were around that wasn't there to have a good time and enjoy themselves. We never witnessed one fight or even an argument. What was impressive was the diversity of people. Some had bikes that barely run and some had million dollar RVs with $50k bikes parked in front of them. It was interesting.

You are living the dream... Mount Rushmore is awe inspiring despite its controversy... Did you know that we made treaties with the Lakota granting them the Black Hills... The mountain's original name was Six Grandfathers... Kinda strange how the US military seized control of the area, gave it back in a treaty and then seized it again... For many Native Americans they see the sculpture in a different light than most tourists...

I am not sure if it is still there but at one time a Native American medicine man placed a prayer staff on top of Six Grandfathers... It was meant to shroud the sculpture in bad medicine until the treaties made with the Lakota are honored...

I don't see our govt ever giving it back... If I were ever there I would want to go look for that staff...

Sorry to get off topic, looks like you had a really good time

No apologies needed Infidel. That's the first I've heard of the treaty myself.. I don't consider myself a knowledgeable person when it comes to history but isn't it funny how sometimes what we are taught in schools and books can be a stretch from reality. Thank you for sharing that.

Yep... Still it is an amazing sculpture... To think about how they are not able to see the whole thing hanging from ropes chipping away rocks... Like trying to read a sentence when you are so zoomed in that all you can see is black ink from a single letter...

I have to agree, its an amazing accomplishment. I looked over the pictures hanging on the walls in the Memorial building with astonishment.

We were undecided on Perry this year until just a few days ago. We decided to do a family camping trip instead of Perry since we did Perry last year. Do you go to the Perry rally often?

Man, love those landscape pics!! (Yeah, OK, so the pics of you are alright too. Hahahaha Just funnin' w/you bud!)

Rushmore, Deadwood...just a couple of places I would love to see before I die.
My parents and older sis have all been there.
Not Sturgis though...as none are into bikes.

Every Summer, for the past 10-15 years (ever since my folks retired)...folks and sis take a 10-14 day road trip in folk's Lincoln.
They've been to both Dakotas; Wyoming; Texas; New Mexico; Vegas 3 times; Grand Canyon once; Tennessee, Kentucky, West. Virginia & Georgia 3 times each.
This year, they went to Minnesota & Wisconsin. In fact, the folks stopped @ my house this morning, to relate the trip to me.
One of the big attractions they seen was Lambeau [sp] Field.

Plus, being retired, the folks are always going on bus tours.

Sorry to get off-topic.
So glad that y'all had a great time!!!

Will, I can attest that the landscape is much better looking that me! lol

IMO you should get there! It is definitely an area to behold. I'm a sucker for mountains and pines though, always have been.

I've been lucky enough to do some traveling over the years. I took a 3 day trip with my older Brother last summer on the bikes. We rode across Missouri the south along the eastern State line to Cape Girardeau, crossed the Mississippi, then crossed the Ohio where it meets the Mississippi close by Cairo Illinois, then onto Nashville that day. We circled back into Kentucky the next day and visited some friends there. Woke up the next morning and rode back to Kansas. That trip although simple and a quick 3 days is a very memorable one.

I also have some regrets, I resided in Az for 13 years and visited Flagstaff regularly but never made it 80 sum miles north of there to The Grand Canyon. I kick myself on that one!

On this trip we were traveling in a group, 5 bikes & a truck pulling a trailer. On our way back we came right through Salina. I did think it would have been nice to say hello but traveling on a schedule and with a group it wasn't possible this time.

Yeah, I totally understand why you couldn't stop for a quick chat.
Maybe another time.

The last trip I took, was back in August of '96. Went to Colorado for a week, with my Grandpa & step-Grandma, visiting some of her family members. I went along mainly due to the grandparents being in their late-70s, and them wanting me along to drive.
Started in Pueblo (I took in the State Fair while the grandparents visited relatives), then moseyed [sp] past Pikes Peak; the Royal Gorge; and along the eastern side of the Divide.
Also stopped in a couple old mining towns (now tourist traps); Denver; Longmont; and Estes Park.

Come to think about it, that is the ONLY trip I've ever taken.

When my parents & sis started taking their yearly trips, I could never get off work to go with them.
Then, these last few years, they know I can't afford it, so they never ask me to go along. Hahahaha

Such is life.

Never been yet.I just decided the other day to go myself.Been thinking about going to bbb in Arkansas.I have always put stuff off because of time or money.Since i got hurt i just go with it now.lol I was looking back thru the pictures.Did you go to devils tower on saturday? It look like about the time that cold front came in.When we came out of Deadwood saturday it was 42.

Perry is a good time, like most things it is what you make it. Of course there are outside influences too, who you go with or who you camp by... As I'm sure you know some places (camps) are more wild than others lol.

I haven't been to BBB yet, but SOON! It could happen next year. I really have an itch to ride Pigtrail.

We got in to Sturgis on Saturday 8-1 & left on Wednesday 8-5. Devils Tower was on Tuesday. As fast and crammed as the trip was it almost melts together.

You need to get a gun scabbard... Good thing about a bike is that you don't have to worry about being quite when you close the door

I haven't done it but I've often wondered the looks I would get with my AR strapped to the handlebars and a Coyote bunge corded to the rear fender!! LOL
