I use CB shorts in a remington bolt action rifle and it works great. I have neighbors within spitting distance on both sides and they never hear or say anything.
Now, as far as getting a drop dead shot on a cat, good luck. Years ago, we were paid to remove about 40 cats from a boat landing (they were eating all of the bait out of the minnow tanks) by whatever means necessary. It was out in the country and we shot, stabbed, arrowed, speared, and did wbout every other thing you could do to a cat.
We have shot them with every guage of shotgun, we shot themw ith .22's, 30-30, 30-06, .308, crossbow, recurve bow, compound bow, flounder gigs, and sometimes we would just get them with a bulldog (White English). And rarely did they fall dead.
Once, we literally removed aver half of the cranium of one lucky contestant with a 30-30 and it flopped and screamed for about 2-3 minutes.
I don't mean to be gruesome but rather warn that if you do not do the job right, they will leave there. One commen tactic used in town is to shoot them where they will die... LATER and let them run off and then it is someone else's problem.
