Talk to me about Mueller scopes

Im currently building an AR with an EOP upper in .204 caliber. Im looking for a good scope and currently have Leupold and Nikon scopes. Im thinking that this gun is going to be used for groundhog shooting mostly/occasional coyote and being as how its a .204, it wont be taking punishment from recoil.
Im thinking I want a 4.5-14 or 4-16.

My question is, who has experience with this scope, what reticle should I stay away from, should I steer clear of this brand? Do I want the illuminated dot?

All comments are appreciated.
Thanks

There seems to be a lot of discussion about them on Rimfire Central, and most is favorable, for a relatively inexpensive scope.

I have two Muellers and have no bones to pick with either one. I have the 8.5-25x50 (illum. dot reticle) mounted on a heavy barreled .243. And their 4-16x50 (illum. mil-dot reticle) on a flat top, .223 AR-15. Both have nice bright, clear glass and work very well in low light conditions even without the illuminated reticle.

I have less moola into BOTH of these scopes then I do into my one and only Leupold. My Leupy is an older model, 4.5-14x40AO, Vari-X III. And honestly, my eyes actually prefer the clarity of the Muellers.

My one and only problem I had with the Muellers was that the 4-16 had to be sent back due to a speck of something on the inside of one of the lenses. The vendor replaced the scope and I've had zero issues to date.

I believe the Muellers are the top of the line when it comes to affordable optics. I have another AR on the bench and if I don't go with my first choice (ACOG = $$$$) this one will have another Mueller riding on top...

Thats the kind of info im looking for, I think the mildot would be a distraction for a long range "little" critter gun, anyone have experience with their German #4 reticle? Seems like they would do well to have a finer reticle in this particular scope.

I have the 4.5x14 on my Marlin 17HMR, I just have to say my eyes liked the clarity.

I put the rifle and scope through it paces last year shooting praire dogs. On 14x out to 150 yards and sometimes to 200, I was smackin those critters.

At 100 yards I could see their whiskers as they were standing up near their holes.

I gotta say I have no complaints about the scope for the price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

And by many reports mostly posative it seems the company is getting better as time goes buy.

I know many would argue, more expensive is always better, but not in all cases, this being one of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have two Mueller's, both with the German #4 reticle. Fantastic reticle, probably one of my all time favorites. Both have the illuminated dot, although I have rarely used that feature, it doesnt get in the way and I am sure I will love having it when I need it. Clarity and light gathering are good for both scopes (4-16x50 and 4-12x44?) One broke seal and let moisture in, sent it back and they replaced it within 5 business days. I have heard of occasional problems with these scopes, and all have reported spectacular customer service. I guess what I am saying is, for the money, the scope is great; however, you may experience a problem with it, but not to fear, they will treat you right.

I have 4 APV . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Had one on a 7mag it still hold O fine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
I have bin waiting for the new long range to come out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
I the others on 22.lr

I'm going to be the odd man out on this one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've had 4 Muellers in the past 3 years. Three of the four had to be returned to Mueller for replacement because they got moisture inside. They were all on small caliber weapons and weren't pounded with recoil. While Mueller promptly and politely replaced them, I have lost all confidence in them. I just refuse to take anything into the field that is questionable (well...except for my shooting prowess /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif).

I'll just go ahead and spend my scope funds on Nikons from here on out. None of the Nikons I have owned have ever failed to hold zero or failed to perform. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have one that I will give you for $25. It has a small dent in the bell. It's the 8.5 X 20 with illuminated dot.

I thought I would love this scope on my .17hmr but turns out I can't stand it.

As a matter of fact, I'll give it to anyone still in school.

You love it that much huh?..lol
Im not in school, but thanks, maybe one of the junior members can use it for their first rig.

You guys are killing me here, some good, some bad reviews, seems like even with the good reviews, there are bad ones from the same person (but they fix it fast). I would rather buy a scope I can depend on and not have to ship it back for repairs, even if its free. I will admit though, I do NOT bang my scopes around. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have a 3X10x44 Tac II that has been a pleasant surprise. No issues at all. Tracks right on and is very clear. I have this on an AR so it doesn't take a beating but I wouldn't buy a scope I didn't think would take the beating.

I have had two Muellers an APV and now the Tac II. Both are great scopes and the optics are as clear as some of my upper end Leupolds.

Other company to check out if you want to spend a little more money is Falcon Optics. They aren't big here in the US yet so the prices are around $400. They are super clear and rate next to the MK Leupolds.

Me, too. I have one, and it went back for moisture, they
promptly replaced it with a smile, and now I am once again
looking for my reciept, so I can send the replacement
back for a replacement. Not to say this is limited to
Mueller. I have a Nikon Monarch that is very disappointing.
My Buckmasters are clearer.

Going forward, I will just buy Bushnell Elites, and Nikon Buckmasters.

Im wondering if for $115.00 its worth a gamble, thats the price of the APV 4.5-14x40, which would be plenty magnification I suppose and I dont think I will need the lit reticle. My calling rifle is an AR 16" with a red dot on it. I guess if it screws up, I can get a replacement and then sell the replacement as a new unmounted scope and get another Nikon. Then consider it a lesson learned. They say for every 10 complaints a company gets, there are another 1000 happy customers.

I appreciate everyones reponses, thats one reason I love this forum so much. If it was nto for my wife going back to school to up her degree, I would happily plop the money down for a higher end scope. Ive never been one to skimp on optics if I can avoid it.

thanks

I have a Mueller 3-10 Extreme I bought new off E-bay for $129. Seems to be well made and the glass is very clear. It's sitting atop my Rem 7MM-08.

I have heard some good reviews on the Tac-II, but you are getting close to Super Sniper or Falcon prices.

Just saw this post and I too have an APV. It's on a 243, while I don't use it very much I take it out of the safe every few months and punch paper with it. It has worked flawlessly as long as I've had it. Wish they made a 1x4x20mm illuminated dot.

Yeah, it'll be worth the gamble.....until that big BLACK coyote, or oversized bobcat walks into view and your scope has gone south.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Even if you have to wait a month or so, the Nikon 4.5-14 Buckmaster can be had from www.theopticzone.com for around $285. And you might want to consider the fact that lower-powered Buckmasters are even less expensive.

If I had to "skimp" anywhere on a scope, I'd buy better quality in a lesser-powered scope instead of buying less quality and more power. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Personally.....I'd wait it out and save enough to buy quality optics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Also, DIRECT FROM THE MUELLER WEBSITE, here's some info about the APV scopes.....Not rated for heavy magnum rifles

Does THAT tell you anything about the durability of the scope? I ain't putting that on ANY firearm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
