Tennessee Hunting

Tj5,
Looks like most of your questions got answered before I could get back on here. Thanks coyotehunter1 and Tater.

Doc,
Now your cooking. Just think of the possibilities. A few annual hunts a year in a different place.
We could get to know each other. Learn a few things from one another, kill a few coyotes and just have a plain old good time.

btr568,
Your welcome to come. Your lease is quite a drive, but I might be able to make the trip as well as a few others.

Critr Gitr,
When you going to come and join in on all the fun?

Rebel,
Come on cuz.

Mark,
U got mail.

Yoteblaster243,
You still interested? Sounds like fun, don't it?

Coyotehunter1,
Thanks for the b-day wishes. My wife got me a new pair of boots and a turkey vest with a padded back and fold down seat. I'll be spoiled now while coyote hunting. I'll probably be so comfy that I'll fall asleep.

As for the "crow" call.........hmmmmmm?.......I sure can make a bunch of noise with it. Does that count?
smile.gif

Tried to tape my five month old son today while he was crying. It didn't turn out to well. I'm gonna have to figure out how close to place the mic to him and how to eliminate some background noises. Hope the yotes like it.
A friend of mine told me that I was programming coyotes to attack babies. BULLPOOP! If the coyotes come to the call then they would have come to a baby anyway. Even if what he says were true, I hope to end their days of being programmed very abruptly. At the very least I'll teach them to associate the call with a funny looking stump that has a stick that makes a loud noise and burns their butt.

That young'un has the shrillest, high pitched cry I've ever heard come out of a baby.
My wife thinks I've lost what few marbles I had left.

Keep the ideas coming in guys. Looks like this is really heading somewhere good.
Might be the humble beginnings of an informal club where folks can get together, learn from each other, have a good time and kill a few coyotes. Yeehaw!

Mine would be close to Crossville, not sure where Doc's or btr568's would be.

Tj5,

That will be dictated on how quick I can get permission to hunt a large area. Haven't been able to reach the guy about the 1500 acres. Have talked to one of the guys who is on a lease. There are 19 others on it with him. They have around 2000 acres and he said they see quite a few coyotes. He told me he would let me know what the others thought, but that he had a couple on there who were a real pain in the foot, three joints up.
I would love to do it by the end of February, but have to get the permission first and then time to let everyone know so they can schedule it. Turkey season starts here I believe the last weekend in March and I doubt they will let us hunt their leases during that time.

We also need to consider that March is the month known for heavy duty winds, and that is not good for calling but as screwy as the winter weather has been in the past few months who knows it may be perfect coyote calling weather.

Cut throat, c'mon down. Your the next contestant.

.........Uh that's my best imitation of the Price is Right.

Jimmie in Ky, why don't you join us for the hunt? You seem to really know your stuff when it comes to calling these cagey critters. There's a bunch of us that could probably learn a lot from you.

Bopeye if you want to lease a farm for everyone to gather and have fun that is great. The truth is 5000 acres in only enough land for a few coyotes and one hunt will remove all the coyotes and you will need to wait a few weeks for new coyotes to move into the area.

I have found for successful coyote hunting you need to get as many farms as you can over a large area. The size of the farm does not make any difference.Hunt one farm and move down the road a mile or two to the next farm.

Hay, guys this is just a thought, but if you'll are wanting to get together , what about LBL don't have to go though the permission thing everbody just pay 20.00 and camp and hunt.

P.S. Cut Throat were abouts you from in east TN.

The LBL is'nt a bad idea Dana. According to the officer and biologist's up there the Tenn. portion is where you'll find the largest population of dogs in the LBL. In fact they tried to talk me into hunting that section instead of the Ky portion. The month of febuary is coyote season up there and they have not been pressured that much.Centerfire is legal during that time in all of the LBL.

The officers up there are a pretty good bunch. They do however follow the rule book to a T. Be sure you follow all reg's when in there.Keep weapons cased and totally empty when traveling in the car and there will be no problems at all.

And that's exactly how I do it Terry. I have several small farms that I hunt, but their not large enough to have several hunters on it. Several of the farms are just a few miles from each other. I could spend every minute of daylight, all weekend long hunting and not cover half the ground that I have permission to hunt.

I WILL NOT lease any land from anybody to hunt coyotes.

If you will go back to my post and read it again you will notice that I said for a "one time only hunt". Not an every weekend get together. I just thought it would be a good way to put some faces with names, learn from each other and to nail a few coyotes.

I have no intention of starting any club, lease or anything of that nature. All I want to do is hunt coyotes. At best this would be just an informal get together of fellow coyote hunters that might be able to meet two or three times a year in different areas of the state to hunt.

The LBL sounds like a good place to go. Can you only hunt coyotes in February though? March through January are they off limits?
I'd love to hunt it.

Maybe someone up in that area can get the ball rolling for a hunt up there. I'd be game.

Bopeye, The coyote season in the LBL IS SET UP ESPECIALLY for getting rid of the excess coyote's they have up there.Coyote's are legal game during the regular furbearer hunting season which starts Dec. 1 in all of the LBL and runs until Jan. 31 each year.Bowhunters got centerfire hunting for coyote's stopped after one season,IT WAS TRIED DURING THE REGULAR FURBEARER SEASON .This is why they set up the coyote season for febuary after all other seasons are over and the users of centerfire rifles won't bother anyone else at that time.During the furbearer season it's strictly rimfire and shotgun ,with the size of shot being regulated by the portion you happen to be hunting.Tenn. limits that to size four or smaller while Ky allows the use of BB or smaller. Anual permit is 20 dollars and is good from march 1st through Feb. 28 of the following year. If you turkey hunt as well it's not a bad deal.

My only available weekend is next week and that is subject to change at any time.I'm working this weekend the again in two weeks for sure.Jimmie

Thanks for the info. Jimmie. Not sure that I totally understand though. Is there some info. I could get on LBL? Maybe TWRA or a website or something?

Looks like I won't be able to go this year to LBL if it ends by Feb. 28th. That's just not enough time for me to get ready and go.

It was a whole lot easier to just up and go hunting before I had my kids, but wouldn't trade them for the universe.

Thanks again Jimmie.

Your friend in sport,
James D. Holbrook

LBL is a good area to hunt I have hunted it three times over the years. The first time was a good hunt the second time was a great hunt and the third time was a wash out due to 20-30 mph winds. The area has lots of coyotes and cats.

Dana, I live in Turtletown. It is beside Ducktown, and then Copperhill where the '96 Olympics were held. I just put East because I figured no one has ever heard of Turtletown. Where is Mooresburg, I haven't heard of that one. Cut Throat

The one guy is suppose to get back to me today on his lease. I'll let you know this evening.

Just finished talking with him, he said that he couldn't get in touch with everyone yet. Still waiting.....

Hey guys, I'm going to talk to my friend again this evening concerning the hunting club. I'm the newbie in the club, so I'm not being real aggressive about this yet. I had the feeling last time we talked that they might let two or three guys hunt, but weren't ready for twenty guys to show up on their lease. I can respect that, they have worked hard to keep the lease and almost lost it this year due to the land changing hands. I am going to have to be handling this very softly until I can gain credability with them concerning coyote hunting. I honestly think they'll come around on this eventually.

Jimmie, the lease is located east of the river between I40 and LBL if that helps any. You are right, there are a lot of coyotes around here. I think you are about two hours Northwest of me. I think Bopeye is about four hours East of me. Perhaps two or three of us could hook up and hunt this lease and sort of be the goodwill ambassadors to open up something bigger and better where several of us could get together in the near future. I'll keep ya'll informed as to my progress.
Jim
