The end of WSM and WSSM?

I was in our local gun shop/pawn shop last week with a buddy of mine that wants to sell his Browning A bolt 270 WSM. The gun dude who's a pretty straight up guy, that I trust on gun info, told him he wouldn't buy it, because he couldn't move them. He did tell my buddy if he could get $550 for it to let it go, because the WSM and WSSM's were "fading out fast." I forget which Mfg he said (maybe Browning) but one of the big gun mfg's made 5 models in WSM last year and for 2010 they only had one. He said ammo for them was about impossible to get, much harder than any other ammo. Anyone hearing the same? I don't have any WSM or WSSM calibers but I know several of you guys do.

I called winchester a couple weeks ago after hearing the same thing. They told me the same thing i read another guy post after words that they are not going to stop making ammo and there is a bunch of BS on the internet about them stoping production of ammo. They told me that brass and factory ammo will stay in production. So im not worried about the hear say of no ammo. Another roumer i do not belive in at all now is the 250 300rd barrel burner 243wssm. Thats crap if you take care of your rifle. I have a 243wssm that had right dang near 200rds ran threw it and when the rifle builder bore scoped it there is no signs of throat or barrel erosion at all.

Ammo isn't hard to get for the 25wssm, it's just a little pricey, but not as bad as WBY. My wife has a 25wssm in an A-Bolt and she loves it, but the deer don't.

Ive noticed alot of wsm and wssm ammo on discount lately. I dont own any short mags but a friend of mine has a 7mm wsm hes been trying to sell and cant get anything for it. I dont think ammo will dissapear that fast but i wouldnt be suprized if they quit chambering rifles for it.

Guess it was Ruger, not Browning. BTW, I can hear the crickets if I concentrate.

Ruger stopped making wsm rifles to market their own short mag version called the rcm. Wsm's ain't going away anytime soon.

^^^^^^ Exactly

About 4 years ago this rumor went around for the fourth time
then.

I have a 300 WSM, so I laid in a 100 years
supply of brass.

So the rumor has circulated
about every 6 months, for the last four years. After
researching, and consulting "experts", my conclusion is the
300 WSM, and the 270 WSM, will be around for a long time.
The 7mm WSM is on life support. But the good news is that
if someone really likes their 7mm WSM, the brass can be formed
from the more readily available 300/270 WSM brass. As for the
WSSM cartridges, I am betting the 243 WSSM is a going to be
around a long time, and the 25 WSSM might make the cut, too.
The 223 WSSM is probably toast, but again for those with
these rifles, brass can be formed from the 243 WSSM cases.

Some of the newer fat magnum cases like the Ruger, and the TC,
I would be more concerned about their longevity, than the
WSM or WSSM cartridges.

There are a fair amount of cartridges covered within the WSM & WSSM groups. Some will be around, others not. I have a 300WSM and reload for it, plus it's got some good traction. Others like the 223 WSSM & 243 WSSM seem less likely to stay around. If one is a reloader, no worries unless you want to sell. I also have a sweet 284win that I am very fond of. It's a little uncommon but easy to gear up for.

I thought they were going to stop making brass for my 45-70 about 100 years ago but someone figured out they could make a buck producing some.

I did not ask about the rifles being chambered it was the ammo issue at the time. Thats what i called and found the scope out on that at the time. As for the 243wssm and the 25wssm i belive now that they are starting to become pretty popular in the AR platform that they will keep comeing up as time goes along. Soon as a 243wssm or 25wssm hits the classifieds section here its gone really quick. I think in the AR plat form they are only going to get more popular. except the 223wssm it has all ready be shot down by a lot of people giveing it a bad rep all ready. Only time will tell.

Some of the WSM and WSSM cartridges will stay(and be popular), and some will go. Just like anything else. The mfrs. made their money on selling the extra rifles. And they have raped(yes I said raped) us as much as they can on unbelievably overly expensive ammo. And they will still milk it as long as they can. Then you will be able to buy ammo for some at reasonable prices, and some you will not be able to buy at all. It is pretty much hit or miss with the exception of the 300 WSM. That cartridge is here to stay. Tom.

i agree completely that's the reason ruger dropped the WSM line....i mentioned that in a post months ago.....but when one of the major producers drops a cartridge line that's lost exposure ...does remington offer any WSM's....they're push'n their own SAUM line....not sure if savage offers WSM...

They are everywhere for sale , in Winchester, Savage and Browning. I have 2 WSM's and 1 WSSM and been hearing this junk since they first came out but nothing has ever happened and never will. Yes shells are not the cheapest i have ever brought but i am paying twice as much for my 375 shells and 10 to 12 dollars more a box for my 444 shells so the price ant bad at all to me.

Right on, about the 300WSM. I don't own any WSM's or WSSM's, but if I were to buy one of them, it would be the 300. A buddy here has one, and let me shoot it. Gotta say, I liked it.
The others leave me cold..
