The king period

Reading the previous post about the 220 swift being the king of 22 I started thinking what is the king of all cartridges. Use whatever criteria you feel appropriate, but I am saying the 30-06 is the king. Please feel free to jump in.

what I don't like about the 30-06 is I dont have one that shoots right now. Of all cartridges I agree the 30-06 is the king. period, nuff said.

I agree, the overshadowed down and dirty do all, kill all DRT 30-06, is the king of the forest. You can run out of 30-06 ammo in Anytown, USA and find some in any store that sells ammo.

What other cartridge is 104 years old and still number 1 in sales?

It's not too big, and not too small... and you can probably find ammo for your aught-six anywhere in the world.

The loading data info for the 30-06 is about double what you'll find for any other cartridge. From 100 grain bullets to 220 grain round nosed brush hammers... it does it all...

Toss up between the 06 and the 17hmr. The only reason the 06 gets the nod is because the hummer usually makes a mess on deer sized game. Overkill dontchaknow.

30-06 is the overall king of cartridges in North America no doubt! I would think 270 would be close behind. I no longer own either but they are great calibers for this continent!

True, but the US has so many more numbers there is no comparison. The whole rest of the world probably has a lot less civilian shooters than the US.

I agree 7x57 is king of the world, 30-06 (30-03)in the springfield was a copy of the Mauser. The US gov. payed patent infringment money to Mauser.

NOT SO FAST MY FRIENDS! I've owned lots of 06's over the last 55 years BUT the 7mm Rem Mag willdo anything it will plus just a little more with just about the same recoil...I killed the first 10 whitetails with my old 760 gamemaster and the last 50 or so with the 7mmRM, how can you not love the 7mmRM!!

I would have to believe that the .223 would have to be considered right up there with all of the black guns, military offerings and the sheer volume of smaller caliber guns chambered in this round. I would also think it's worldwide distribution would put it up there along with the .308 and the 7.62x39 in terms of volume.

That being said if the question is restricted to bolt actions and general big game hunting in north america, then I would agree with the 06. It seems in that category you would be followed closely by the old 30 30.

I think looking at a .22lr and the 30-06 is a little like comparing apples to oranges...

Certainly, with Boy Scouts, ROTC, and general 'youth shooting', the .22 will account for many rounds sold over the years.... My grandfather even taught me how to kill Quail with a .22, in case I ever needed to eat...Yes, I know it's illegal, but so is non-survival in my book...

For "big game" kills, the 30-06, has historically been the king of he field...and offers a wider variety of usable hunting loads than most any other firearm..as well as the number of rounds used by the military over the years...

Oh no....not another "king" post...

In the spirit of the times, my vote for "overall best" goes to the 22 CB cap. From field mice to Cape buffalo, it has done it all worldwide... And very efficiently and quietly, too, I might add.

Just be careful that you don't shoot your eye out...

The 7x57!It will do anything the 06 will with less recoil.I think most folks pick something like the 06 or .270 mainly because it's about the most potent cal they can handle comfortably recoil wise.
