I think looking at a .22lr and the 30-06 is a little like comparing apples to oranges...
Certainly, with Boy Scouts, ROTC, and general 'youth shooting', the .22 will account for many rounds sold over the years.... My grandfather even taught me how to kill Quail with a .22, in case I ever needed to eat...Yes, I know it's illegal, but so is non-survival in my book...
For "big game" kills, the 30-06, has historically been the king of he field...and offers a wider variety of usable hunting loads than most any other firearm..as well as the number of rounds used by the military over the years...
