.17 rem 20 gr V-max vs jackrabbit. Not the most carnage but I was happy. Note the blood spatter on the other side of the rifle. Thats how far he flew!

elks,
Sorry you don't like the carnage. I agree, I don't call it varmint hunting, heck, I shot this jack from my back door (see the thread I posted, I'm very pround). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
But I live in cow country and rabbits and ground squirrels are a complete pest. They eat the hay as fast as we throw it out for the cows. They carry ticks, fleas and all kinds of sickness. They dig holes that the cows step in and can break a leg, the loss of a significant investment. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif
Now we can argue that we created this problem by bringing domesticated livestock to the high desert, but lets leave that to PETA. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
When I shoot a rabbit or squirrel I know I am ridding the county of one more pest. If I use a .22, they may kick and squirm. If I use a centerfire, they usually explode. Hell, my girlfriend will swerve to hit a jack on the road in her truck. If I get a little show each time I drop the hammer so much the better. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
If you are offended, sorry. Stop visiting the "Varmint Hunting" section or use the word "carnage" as a clue. No one is forcing you to look. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

i was shooting rabbits with my 22-250 and shot two sitting in one spot, walked around a little and went to one of them i shot and his heart was still beating about 3 feet away from his body. craziest thing ever, probably beated for 1 to 2 minutes outside the body.

elks,

If you trully are eating your cougar, then to me that falls in the same category as deer, elk, and all other game animals. So you have my apologies on that one. I dare say however, that the vast majority of people do not eat their cougars, bears, and other such animals. It is law here too to take the eatable parts out with you as well, but I don't think amny actually eat them although I could be wrong on that one as well. I also have heard the cougar is in fact quite good, I might never know.

I will also concede that PD shooting is not hunting to me either. When I made my last remark it was more in jest, while it did happen, I still consider it PD shooting not hunting.

However, I still view PD's, jack rabbits, coyotes, fox, and anything in the trophy class basically the same. They are not hunted (or shot) for the meat. I am not saying a PD is equal to the others in trophy status, in fact I have never seen a trophy PD, but they are shot for the fun. Like it or not, it is for the fun. Many will try to rationalize their hunting of many animals, but I believe it comes down to the fact that they enjoy it.

I don't think it is fair for you or me or any of us to place our morals upon anyone else. I might think something isn't (or shouldn't) be done, but it isn't up to me to decide for you.

I know you basically said the same thing, but like you stated, it said "carnage". That explains it all. It would be no more right for some PETA person to pop in here and criticize all of us for hunting predator/varmints period!
It is a predator huntign website, what else should one expect? It said "carnage" so....

Anyway elks, I really don't think most of us are that far apart on what we think and feel....discussing ethics and morals is never easy and will probably never have a conclusion. Enjoying hunting whatever you hunt my friend!

C

ps. I'll let you know what I think of my next cougar and bear!

well it was asked for & i found it. so here it goes. jack rabbit took off 10 feet in front of me, headed to the game trail about 20 yrd in front of me. i took aim, bang, pop, worst / most carnage i've seen /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif by varmint gun. gun mini-14, ammo 55 grain american eagle. not sure if soft point or what. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

jack rabbit 60 yds 25-06 75gr moly coated V-Max nothing left where it was standing, pieces hanging in mesquite bush 15 ft away.

41 mag handgun and a woodchuck at about 10 yards, facing me. Looked like it pulled his head out his a__. 12 gauge, federal high brass copper platted #5 and a red squirrel at maybe, maybe, 10 feet. The wife and kids still wake up screaming.

I shoot ground squirrels primarily for depredation. Like yesterday, I was shooting thinking,

"This is a job. Don't screw it up and miss..."

But it is hunting as well. I could have just poisoned the area, or fumigated his hole. By using a 22 LR rifle, he was getting more than a sporting chance because I missed that one. And I have hunted them with centerfires because I needed the range, and even archery tackle because I needed the quiet. I have hunted them with pistols, and pellet guns too. I think its very sporting.

I get bored watching bear hunting on tv, because they always bait, and seem to shoot while the bear has his head in the barrel or bucket. Its just not my thing, for others they are just fine hunting that way. Its not for me to become the anti hunter because hunting is different in another locale.

Each makes his own sport.

A rabbit shot from my 350 Remington mag with a 125gr Sierra JHC pistol bullet left a 20 yard fan spray of blood in the snow. A friend did a drive by on a ferel cat sitting on the window sill of an old shed, it blew the cat through the back wall of the shed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I shot a ratcoon that had been tearing up dogs and trash cans in the area.I quickly learned that its best not to shoot treed Ratcoons with a ingram submachine gun and a magazine full of golden saber hollow points Gavity tends to
enter into the picture.I got soaked with blood and chunks coon.

Shot a jack with my .17 Rem. and couldn't find his front legs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

125 gr tnt Speer at 3200 fps in a 308 win, Pdog 100 yds center mass.3x4 ft. Fan shaped red smear with a few chuncks left

Shot a jack in Az last year at about 50yds with 25-06 with 75gr v-max. First shot went high and between the ears. Forgot gun is sighted in 2in high at 100yds. The next shot was center of chest. Threw the whole thing 15ft in the air. When myself and two Az school teachers walked out to take a look at the remains as we got to within 25yards of it the right ear came floating down from who knows. There was nothing left but little cubs. It had been a long time since I had viewed that much carnage. The 75gr v-max throws thing along way. That is why we(my brother and hunting partners) rabbits puff bunnies.

I just finished sighting in my Tikka 25-06 with 90 gr vmax at my parent's farmsted and there was a cotton tail sitting next to their new indoor archery range building. Mom was complaining about them eating all of her newly planted shrubs so I figued it would be ok to blast it. Sun was just setting, found it in the crosshairs and squeezed the trigger. After the recoil no rabbit in the scope /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif. Went inside and cleaned my riffle, next morning Mom woke me up with a bucket of hot soapy water and a rag in her hand and told me to go out and clean off the side of the archery range. I went out and looked at the side of the white building and it looked like someone through a five gallon bucket of blood at it. There were streaks all the way up to the edge of the 11 ft overhange of the roof. Finished cleaning it off and she came out with the ladder and told me to get the head off the roof (only thing solid I found from it) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

jack onager, look at my previous post & then save to desk top & make picture bigger. you will see that the guts are really not guts but babbies like you encountered. o'well what can you do? i guess shoot them all!

Cleve,
read your post while I was arguing with elks. When I saw your pic, I knew what it was and cheered! BTW my girlfriend shot the jack! She cheered and squeeled. I just shoot the legs off of them!

Here are this friday evening's pics;
J shot a jack and there was so much of an explosion to the sides I thought she hit the ground. Nope, just a 55 gr V-max hitting a jack! What splatter! I couldn't get it all in one frame! That is his foot hanging in the brush! She kicks a$$! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Then I shot this jack while standing next to the truck. (I think he was trying to get the drop on us!). I haven't seen the .17 tie a jack in a knot before. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
rabbitgore4.jpg

It was a pretty close shot and after the shot I heard something hit the truck. I thought "Crap a rock or the jacket off the bullet just cost me my $500 deductable!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I looked all around the truck and I couldn't find anything. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
I climbed up on the roof to look for more jacks and I saw this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
rabbitgore3.jpg

It was raining rabbit gore! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

No bashing intended but read the above post concerning the word "CARNAGE" as a warning. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif As to why? Just enjoying the splat and sharing with others who enjoy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Because it is sick and just plain wrong.... Noot to mention against PM policy. Go to the pic section and look at rules regarding graphic.... Says none. I can't come on here and cuss up a storm and dimiss it bt labeling it "Explicit Language".
