The word "Harvest" sounds really stupid

GS......Sorry, you are right. I let my own opinion affect my post. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif My apologies to ric. I don't even know him and should not have said what I did. I do feel though that we have to keep it toned down when we talk to the non hunters who are not antis yet. It is that segment of the population that will decide at the ballot box whether I am hunting with a gun or if I will only have a camera one day. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ric you do have a unique way of coming across as a real hillbilly, and you don't seem to care if your posts offend anybody, you state its their choice to react the way they do. I think you are just out for some fun and really don't mean much of what you say.

Harvest, kill, thin out, blast, dropped, red mist... WE all know what these things mean. But let's face it, our great country's majority is no longer made up of the rural hunter-gatherer mindset. We have become, for the most part, an urban society that is far removed from our rural roots. Many couldn't care less if hunting was legal or illegal. However, there are also many who are on a personal crusade to end our sports afield.

If using terms like "harvest" is less likely to send a person home determined to do all they can to take away my right to hunt...I'll use harvest.
Bottom line, I want to keep hunting and I want my children and their children and their children, etc. to enjoy that as well.

If I win a personal battle by exercising my right to use a more graphic word in a non-hunting crowd, I may have simply given my adversary ammunition to win the war. As hunters, our ultimate victory against anti's or lefty's is to be able to keep hunting.

Personally, I sort of cringe at publications that use the very graphic "red mist" type language because I know that just gets the anti's hackles up and they become more determined than ever to take away our God-given right. I would rather they went home complacent or even disarmed. Yes, we may be able to win the fight when they oppose us...But I'd rather have as few opponents as possible.

Considering how backwards many folks' values have become (where a tree or a salamander is more important than a baby or elderly human)...And considering how this has seemingly permeated our government, lawmakers, and the majority of our society, we need to use the intelligence that the good Lord has given us and I believe that means using a wise choice of words.

If we want to perpetuate our sport and pass along to our children that love for nature that perhaps only hunters truly understand, we need to play it smart and understand the times that we live in. It's a hard reality and I don't particularly like it...But it's a reality none-the-less.

I truly mean no offense to anyone and I respect everyone's opinion. This is just mine.

howler nailed me.
i like to stir the pot sometimes.
get the blood pressure up.
i didn't know that this harvest thing would go boom.
never was it my intent to offend anyone.
just somethin bout the werd harvest that just hits a nerve.
it just don't fit at all.
use this word about killing a critter sounds like spin.
the person that hears this word might just question
your honesty. they might wonder why you are covering up
reality. they will wonder what else you might try to spin.
lets push a substitute pc werd.

i guarantee this though-if you and i went huntin i would treat you with
dignity and respect as i do all people.
and we would enjoy the hunt and i would have a new friend.
happiness,
ric

By the way... Ric, I've read all your posts. You're hilarious...Keep on posting. I had a pretty good idea that you were just trying to keep things interesting with the "harvest" thing..But it did bring out some good discussion, I think.

Hey, is the coyote huntin' getting any better for ya in your neck of the woods?

Oh yeah, congratulations on the LSU win...Even though I was sort of pulling for O.U. O.Well.
Happy hunting.

Unlike the Canada/USA Junior hockey game today where the BEST team blew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Harvest is a good word. It's what hunters and trappers do; they take the surplus crop of animals. If the animals aren't surplus, then they are protected. People that "kill" will be killers and people that "harvest" will be hunters.

Kansas State could have beaten LSU and USC. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Look what we did to OU and they still get to play in the BCS title game.

While I'm all for trying to portray myself and other hunters in the best light possible, I cannot and will not succomb to the term "harvest". When telling stories I don't portray gory detail, but I sure don't harvest an animal either.

As a side note: Too bad we can't get to see the real national championship game between LSU and USC.

Twenty two two fifty I like what you said I think you said it very well, I hadn't thought of it that way-but It struck me very good.
