TIGHTEST CHOKE CONSTRICTION FOR 835

Hey everone, just wanted to say hi I'm new to the site and coyote hunting. I have been pattern testing my mossberg 835 with Winchester black box 3-inch 4 buck through a factory full choke tube and am not impressed with the patterns. Just wondering how tight of a choke I can safely use with 4 buck (extra-full, super-full.) And does anyone have any suggestions on a scope base that is well made for the drilled and tapped receiver that came with this gun. Any info would be appreciated.

have you tried your modified tube?... it may be the tight choke is causing the pattern to open up... just a thought...

Wish I could LeRoy the gun is actually a turkey gun that only came with Ulti-Full I purchased the full a couple of weeks ago thinking that it would be better than modified. But I will definently get one and give it a try. Info on buckshot load and choke selection is a little slim in my neck of the woods. Does anyone have any suggestions on sites that offer good advice about this topic?

How about doing a SEARCH here on PM? The topic has been done to death and back. There is a bunch of good discussion about shotguns, loads, and chokes here and a little work in the research department will give you a good read.

I know, Ive already done that but I didnt see anything on how tight of a constriction that you can SAFELY use with 4 buck. Does it vary with the makes and models of firearms or is there a constriction that you must not tread past. 4 buck is a large pellet and I don't want to damage my barrel or hurt myself in the process of choke and load selection.

I along with a lot of others use .660" diameter for best performance with the three inch .12 gauge. Federal Premium has been a really good patterning load.

Where do I get it? My local gun dealer says he doesn't list federal buckshot in his catalogs Winchester and Remington is all he can get and the local wally world doesn't even handle buckshot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

try www.trulockchokes.com Took three tries but my 835 does its best a .680 turkey choke. I realy thought it would do better with some thing a litte more open. George at trulock explained that the 835s have a larger than 12 ga bore, actualy almost 10 ga till it reaches the choke and that effects the chokes performance.

Regarding chokes, there are many, I use Kick's Ind. Gobblin' Thunder. They also have a BuckKicker choke tube. Trulock is right in that the 835 barrels are overbored and a slightly more open choke such as the .680 might be more effective. I'd ask the maker of my chokes for their recommendation.

Regarding ammo, MidwayUSA, Natchez Shooters Supply, Cabela's, Graf's and Sons, all have websites and should be able to ship right to your door. They're all good reliable dealers with good service and secure ordering set-ups.

Thanks all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifI've gotten more info from this post and this site than I ever thought I would. This is great stuff and please keep it coming.

In regards to choke selection it sounds as if .660-.680 may be the sweet spot for my 835, and with some pattern testing I'll know. In my neck of the woods everyone that I've talked to says full is to dangerous to use with 4 buck and will damage chokes and barrels thats why I had such concern over using anything tighter. You all have helped alleviate those fears and I appreciate it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif. Now, whats the diffrence between a Tru-lock and a Kicks choke tube. They both look pretty close to each other in construction and materials and seem to be solid products based on the info and testimonials on PM.

I wouldn't spend the money on them chokes they are too expensive for me. I always just use my factory modified choke and get good patterns out past 50 yards. I use OObuck though so that might be the difference.

Try the choke that came with it and whatever other chokes you have for it then if your not satisfied go look for something better. As far as loads alot of guys are using the dead coyote with good success and I have and it works great. Another good load is number4 buckshot and it also works pretty well. I usually use OObuck not because its better then the other but because it works just the same and all the stores where I live only usually carry OObuck I don't want to have to order or drive around to find something that works just the same other people with tell you that OObuck ain't no good but I shoot loads with 18 pellets and they work good.

I would like to get some opinions on choke constriction and 12ga. loads and shot size for fox and an occasional coyote that might show up to my grey fox pup tape. I have shot a good many greys with #4 shot full choke. Kills em dead. #4 turkey to light for coyote? I was thinking #2 shot with extra full choke would kill the yotes but be too hard on the fox pelts. Any opinions?

Number 2 shot is borderline small for coyotes unless you really let them get in close. I would use a wider chokes load of copperplated bb's. The wider choke wouldn't pepper the foxes as much but the bigger shot would break down a coyote better.
