To build or just buy a cz for a 17 remington?

Alright I think i want a 17 remington. Why?... Because I have a 22 hornet and a swift and I want another varmint cartridge

So I have looked at taking a stevens 200 action and building off of that. Or is the cz a nice enough rifle that I wouldn't be missing much not going custom. I don't want to spend a lot of money. It seemed that the stevens build would be a cost effective build or is it not that straight forward as it seems? Just thinking out loud here and looking for some direction and pros cons. Thanks for any help.

You know, most times I have a definite answer for a question like this but this time I do not. I had one of those CZ 527 Varmit in .17 Remmy and it shot wonderful. Much fun on prairie dogs and ground squirrel alike. I would have kept it too had I not accidentally ruined it several years ago.

I have also purchased barrels for an existing Savage action and that worked great too. So much so that at the moment I have another one ordered to replace my worn .204 Ruger barrel.

So since I have had great success with both, it is a hard question to answer but I can tell you this: I miss that little CZ.

I still have my first CZ527 in 17 Rem. It is still a shooter too. Every CZ 17 Rem I have or had, has been a good shooter. I've bought and sold several over the years, Great rifles they are.

Yeah have been doing some research and just cant decide. Seems like the cz is a great little factory gun. I like the idea of putting together my own rifle also. I will be away for a few days but look forward to any pearls of wisdom from you folks.

I'm not quite as big of a CZ fan as some of the other fella's, but from what I've seen and heard I would go the CZ route. Later, if you want to rebarrel, then rebarreling a CZ has been a great experience for many.
I know the CZ 17's shoot very well right out of the box, so that would be my vote.

Have a couple CZ and love them a lot of gun for the money and like the set trigger option very much it's gonna cost some money for a jewel or timmeny in a build to get it to compare. But there is something to be said about a custom I just built a 6.5-55 on a mod 7 action with a #3 shillen and haven't shot much of anything else since!

Add up the cost of buying a *New CZ .17 Hornet and then price a Re-Build and decide from there? Then ask Yourself if Your re-build cost too much to get all the work done and would You have as nice a Rifle as a CZ?

I'm thinking a CZ .17 Hornet would run around $600.00-$700.00 price range depending on where You buy it....price around first and go from there!

I asked my local Gun Dealer about ordering me a CZ .17 Hornet and he wasn't able to get any info on it...yet another Guy I know has one on order....go figure?

With all this talk about the .17 Hornet....what do You Guys think about it?I tried to order me one in the Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter and they were all on back order and most Dealers couldn't get one...whats up with that?

I got on Gallery of Guns and it said "Allocated" on all the .17 Hornets....again what does that mean?

My other question is....do You think such a small bullet with what?.....20 grains will hold up well in any kind of cross winds?

I know this round has quite a few supporters here but I'm not one of them. Those tiny pill's get blown around by the least little breeze, lose velocity/energy quickly and the barrel fouls quickly with the accuracy dropping off.

Do you actually have much or any real experience with the 17 Rem?

I would look for a Remington 700 in 17 Remington. There are a lot of good triggers and stocks out there.

Hogwash!
While the original 17Rem barrels from Remmy were prone to fouling, that problem was solved by modern rifling/manufacturing techniques before most on this site even started hunting predators and is totally irrelevant in todays firearms.
Like every cartridge, the 17's have their limitations, but at the end of the day the 17Rem is the only chambering ever designed specifically for harvesting fur, and it's just gotten better over time thanks to metallurgy, mfg. technology, and bullet designs.
They're not for everyone though, so the guy that can't get any closer to a predator than 4-5 hundred yrds, and just kicks em in the ditch when he finally does connect anyway is definitely better served with a larger caliber and heavier bullet.
Not saying that's you Bernie,,, just saying.

Well that may have been your experience but certainly not mine. Or the 550 yard ground squirrel that I shot earlier this year. Lucky shot perhaps but he did not know that! I have also taken many praire dogs with the little 20 grain Vmax bullet and for sure whenever I go on a praire dog hunt I am going to have a .17 Remington along.

In the last almost 35 years that I have owned and shot .17 Remingtons I have found them to be a fun and accurate little round and one that I plan on never being without.

Oh, and I have never had one that was any quicker to foul a bore than any of my .224 bore guns were. Just another long held myth.

That's BS!!!
Obviously has never owned one or shot one.

So these days tiny super light bullets are unaffected by wind and maintain their velocity and energy downrange? We're talking physics here folks. That doesn't change.I might be wrong on the fouling issue but I stand by the rest.
