To build or just buy a cz for a 17 remington?

and then.... if you want to build one later... you can use the CZ as a referance for quality and accuracy.

We can bat this back and forth till doomsday.Fact is I had no experience whatsoever with any of the guns or calibers I bought over the years.I think it's likely that holds true for most people. All I had to go by was what I read about them. The original poster asked for opinions and I offered mine.

Bernie,

While I would be the first to defend your right to an opinion and the right to express it, the facts that you used to arrive at your opinion do not hold up in reality. That is what some were trying to say.
Until the small 17 cal. bullet can slow down a bit, that seems to be around the 300yd mark, wind and gravity do not have a chance to work on it as quickly as they do to a bigger and heavier bullet. Not much to work with in the realm of physics. The bullet is to small and to light and to fast to be affected like other bullets are.
Kind of like my days of road racing in the late 60's and early 70's. My 70 Cuda AAR would normally trounce bigger cubic inch motors in a 1/4 mi., but at say 3/4 of a mile those cubic inches started to take over. Kind of the same way it works with a 17 Remington vs say a 223 or 243, ect.
I know, a poor example.

But I understand it.

Actually, he didn't. He asked whether "building or buying" a factory 17 was the better option.
You're the one that took it upon yourself to tell the world what a poor choice he'd made in the 17Rem (by your own admission) "based on absolutely zero experience" with the cartridge.
Even if he had asked for "opinions" on the 17Rem chambering, you're pretty much leading with your jaw Bernie, when you offer yours without any experience what so ever to base it on. But hey, it's your hole, dig it as deep as you see fit.

RePete what he actually said was he "thinks he want's a .17".The way that read to me was he was undecided of the caliber choice and open to opinion's on the .17 along with the rest. All I did was point out some issues with it I'd read in Lyman's reloading manual and most recently Bryce Towsley's article "Black Rifles and Brown Dogs" in the current issue of NRA'S American Hunter.Your turn

It's pretty standard on this forum that when some asks for an opinion or recommendation about a particular item (read gun, load, call, etc.) that the people responding to said question will be providing information based upon personal and relevant experience with said item. There are many sites out there with Internet Jockies espousing Internet wisdom on matters that they have no real world experience with. This is exactly the type if information we as a forum are trying to avoid on Predator Masters. We all want to kill coyotes in real life, not on the Internet or in the hypothetical sense. I trust the information provided by experienced members if this forum far and above the repeat articles found in the gun rags that provide me little real world info and most often don't pertain to my interests. Even gun writers can have limited experience and antiquated opinions. Just my 2 cents.

btw I own and kill coyotes with a 17 rem.

Nice Spin Bernie.
All I can tell ya is that if you plan to continue basing your "OPINIONS" on what you read in some hook&bullet rag or worse yet, what you hear on the interweb, and then spewing it as gospel to anyone that will listen, then you best develop a taste for Crow.

Me, I'll continue to only comment on things I "KNOW" from actual hands on experience because even though I've never actually tasted Crow, I can't imagine that it's all that tasty.

It's your hole.
Keep digging.

If the 17 is such a terrible cartridge then why do so many have it or as myself getting ready to build one. There can't be that many people wrong. Just sayin

I must be out of my mind, because I've been using a 17 Rem. since 1971 and have loved it. Its been the perfect fur friendly round for me. Then again, maybe I don't know what a "primrose" path looks like.

You need a new sponsor and join a different rehab.

That should take care of that problem.

Just do it Tim
I personaly have no use or desire for one of tyhe large case capacity 17's but if I were to go that direction the 17/204 makes the most sense and would definatly be at the top of my list.

Come on Tim. You've had a taste. You know you want to try it again with better bullets available this time around. The Cooper needs a big brother in 17 centerfire.

I don't see any 17 Rem brass available anywhere. A brass shortage squashed my interest several years ago, looks like nothing has changed... How are you guys getting your brass? Forming your own from 204s?
