To build or just buy a cz for a 17 remington?

I'm not having any problem finding brass, but I will admit that right now I've got enough to last me forever.

Tim, can you imagine a 30gr. bullet moving at 4000fps and that would just be idling. Dump a little more in the case to bring the rpm's up and there it is, a high revving 30 doing 4400.

Oh Man! I can picture you behind the wheel of one of those.

And pay no attention to Charlie, he's old and slow now.

WHAT?
CAN'T HEAR YA!
My ears are still ringing with "awesomeness" from shooting this old gal with my 17Rem.

I love the 17 remington for fur but if your after elk or big bear, the 17 HMR is the only choice. lol
You cant go wrong with the 17 remington.
I built quite a few on savage actions.

Well yes, sorta of.

I made a couple hundred from 204Ruger brass, and it works very well. But I traded for a Sako 75 in 17 Rem and it came with a couple hundred pieces of 17 Brass, plus I already had a few hundred pieces from prior rifles.

100 pieces of brass will last me a long time.

Going sideways on the topic here, I had a 17 Rem barrel set back about .050" (don't remember the exact length) and had my full length sizer get the same taken off the base. Then I was able to use once fired 223 brass that was almost free a few years back. My friend just had to have that rifle, so I sold it. But was thinking of doing that again.

It's out there, but right now times are tough for lots of different kinds of brass. Keep your eyes open and ye shall find. I bought 400 rounds of new .17 Remmy brass right here on the classifieds just a year or so ago. A couple of years ago I was at a gun show and bought around 800 rounds of mixed loaded and empty .17 brass for (if memory serves) $40. Quite a bargain and they were all in MTM ammo boxes too.

BTW, you CAN use .223 brass to make .17 Remington ammo but you get a really short neck. I tried it and it seemed to work OK but not sure if the abbreviated neck gave the bullets enough grip. But for sure you can use .204 brass but you will have to neck it down, trim it and fireform it. Kits to do so can be purchased from RCBS and others.

That would be an excellent way to go if a person was rebarreling. The 17-223 is really close to the 17 Rem. in velocities and was chambered by H&R on their fine bolt guns they used to make. Darn I wished they still made those. Sako or FN actions, Douglas barrels, Bishop stocks, what an excellent setup and very reasonably priced. But very few were buying them.

I'm not a big Savage fan, but they sure make for a cheap "do it yourself" switch barrel rifle. You've got to love that.

Now back to Tim and his new 17-204 he's buying. What action is it going to be Tim? Lilja or Pac Nor barrel? I sure can't wait till you get it finished.

Based it on watching my buddy drop Coyotes like stones (and actually seeing the minimul fur damage when we skinned em) back when Remmy first released the 17Rem.

PS,,, that was back when I lived in NV where shots are long and the wind NEVER stops blowing.
We didn't have TV shows, balistic programs, and internet experts back then.
Had to use common sense and hands on experience.
(Course we did have a bunch of fat guys hanging around the gun shops talking chit we could turn to if that failed)

Keep digging Bernie,,, Keep digging.
Meanwhile, I'll be out killing chit with one of my anemic 17"s.

Whether it be 17rem or 17fb, grab brass when you find it, not when you need it. I snagged 250 nickel 17rem cases and a set of dies on here a while back. Already had 140 brass cases and dies, but don't plan on letting this little gem of a rifle go in my lifetime. So I picked them up since I had the money. Wish I had done more of the same with those 25gr Berger Targets

As to fouling, my factory tube hasn't been cleaned in about 200 rounds, it still clusters those bullets nice and tight on paper. As to wind drift, well can't speak to that. Most of my shooting is 200yds and under with this rifle and I don't do much more than hold on fur. Got to love a setup that gives you dead critters with no exits and entries you need a comb to find.

We still have the gunstore crowd.

I remember telling my brother about the 17 Rem, how it dropped coyotes. He just couldn't believe me. How could a tiny 25gr bullet do such a thing and not tear up the hides like our 22-250's or 243's did? That is until he saw it with his own eyes.

The brass shortage really puts a damper on any new guys interested in a 17 Rem. The only solution is:

1. Hope you find something in the classifieds
2. Make your own

I reload and I want a 17 Rem but I'm not sure I want to wait months or years to find brass or buy 3-4 die sets and a neck turner to make my own.

Yeah it's wise to buy what you need for the 17s when you see it!
I just found some Berger 25gr match bullets. The discontinued variety. I bought the last 3 boxes they had in stock and needless to say I am PUMPED! I thought for sure I was SOL on finding those again. Now I have a stock of about 750 of them to get me through till nagel gets going again. It's pretty much my go to coyote bullet. Gonna have to ration those strictly for coyotes and just shoot the vmaxes for PDs.

It was threads like these that made me want a 17rem! Then I shot a coyote with it and was flat amazed. It dropped like it got hit by a bolt of lightening. I couldn't even tell it was shot until I picked it up by the back legs and blood poured out of the tiny entrance hole! For saving fur it's the next best thing to a foothold!

Yeah, maybe the 17 Rem isn't for me. I'm not interested in constantly searching classifieds and online stores for scraps of reloading supplies and always wondering if I'll ever fibd what I need. Too bad, because the 17 Rem looks really neat.

Sourcing components isn't all that bad. Not as hard as you may think. You can always buy factory rem and shoot it up for the brass. Then once you have your dies you can buy hornady bullets. They've been producing them forever and have even expanded their line. Their 25gr HP is a fine fur bullet. The 17 is just too much fun to shoot not to try one out.

O'jezz... talk about peer pressure ! lol

Well if it did happen, it would be a M700 with a P-N barrel 9 twist. Proly a # 4 fluted chopped @ 24" in a McMillan Game Scout stock. Haven't give it much thought though.

Yes, you are so right. Sacrificing for something you love or something that works well is never worth the time and effort.

I certainly see where you haven't given this to much thought. My gosh, you really need to start narrowing down all of those options.

Only in spoiled America eah Jim LOL

I mean, how hard is it to set on your butt watching TV while occasionally pecking away on a lap-top?

I think we should start an alliance (like red-neck island
smile.gif
) and start telling everyone what usless dogs the 17's are so there's less competion for components. Maybe we could get Rusty to join in. He can be the Mayor.

This is just between you and me, so Mum's the word.

PS,,, K_V_V,,, you're in too, but don't tell anyone else.
