Too many 6mm's!!!

Thinking back to the days when I hunted in Wyoming, wind can be serious.

The 7 Mag with a 162g A-Max (BC=.625) at 3000 fps would be one of my go to rifles, would not knock a huge hole in them either, won't break the bank either.

2M,
A-5 EDGE is here.
Seekins DMS got here today.
Both flying to Mizzu Priority in the AM to finish 'er off.
Won't be long now...

Ack,
I run those same #s from my 7Wizzer and know that hard runnin' (3100) 115DTAC is neck & neck with it out to 1K. And doing it while burning 20gr less powder per primer. I'm sure the big AMAX would do it in a more dramatic fashion.
That is one experiment I plan on studying in earnest...

And the 243wssm never gets any light? (I didn't know that they AI a 243wssm?)

I love mine.

Food for the friends

My 6mmAI has a 13 twist and launches 75gr V-max`s at 3850-3875.....LOTS of fun...

I readily shoot this rifle at 1000 yards with the 75`s...

Richard Franklin built my "toy" and judging from it`s performance he will be building another REAL SOON.........

knockemdown, the Rem 700 SS Sporters with a muzzle break, in a laminated stock, bedded, and floated will usually shoot bug holes with a high powered scope.

It is a great hunting rifle to 550 yds, which the several that I have is as far as they have been shot. When we go deer hunting in Kansas, we usually fill our tag early, then the yote hunting is on. I killed 4 on my last trip in Kansas, and the furs were simply outstanding, shot with the 154g SST at 3200 fps with the longest shot being 430 yards. My hunting partner had the patience of a knat, or we would have killed a dozen or more on the trip.

When you tweek a 7 Mag, they are very accurate indeed; with a muzzle break, they kick like a 243 at the most.

Sounds like a honey, Ack!
My 7 Wizzer sports a Badger thruster brake and is quite pleasant to shoot as well...

Mulling over the idea of a super lightweight Seven barrel burner in .243 to sling 55NBTs faaaast. Not a bad b.c for such a light bullet and pushed over 4K, it would be some kind of laser on a yote stand...

Just thinkin' out loud, but hey, you gotta have something to daydream about, right???

Tb: I'm not sure what the velocity gain is on the .243 AI version but it is one of the greatest improvements over the original case IMO because the AI case won't stretch as much as the parent cartridge. The .243 Win was the second cartridge I started reloading decades ago. It's a great cartridge but it does need regular trimming and I had more than my share of case seperations. Now, it may have been the result of a youthful and ignorant reloader but I know my son has been putting hundreds of rounds down the tube of his AI with neither of these issues. You will gain some velocity and a loading manual or one of the powder companies' websites will probably tell you how much but the other benifits of the sharp shouolder in the AI case would be worth it to me if I didn't gain any velocity at all. I'll be rebarrelling a 700 VSSF to a .243 AI as soon as my budget officer can handle it.

Just some food for thought.

Timberbeast, my 1:10 Wilson .243 AI will handle the 100 Sierra BTSP Gamekings just fine. These 2 groups were shot at 109 yards with the Sierra published max load of IMR 4350 for the .243 Winchester round.

The 9" twist will stabilize the 105 A-Max, and I will also shoot the 87 and 75 V-Max just fine.

If you are going to go through the trouble of getting an Ackley Improved (extra cost in custom dies and case forming, etc)... then definitely get the 6mm AI.

The 243 AI offers only a teeny bit of improvement, cuz the case body is already straight, so it goes from a case volume of 53 to 57 for the AI. That's a 7% increase in case volume

But the 6mm Rem goes from 54 for the plain Jane version, to 63.5... that's a whoppin' 17% improvement in case volume.

Both cartridges will give you the same-ish muzzle velocity, and you will get about 150 fps increase from the 6mm AI, and about 75 fps increase from the 243 AI

I'm sure that someone will claim that they got astronomical increases... but case volume is case volume... and there are no free lunches.

Catshooter,

Do you have any experience with the 6-284? How does it differ ballistically, if any, from the 6mmAI? I can get better brass if I go with a 6-284.

Thanks

It is just about the same as a 6mm-06.

VERY short barrel life. There are better ways to reach out and get out far.

If you are real hot for a very long rifle... look at the 6.5 bore size - in 6mm, the 6mm-AI is about it - more than that and you are really eating up barrels for little gain.

17% would definitley be whoppin', as you say. In my estimation it is more like 9%, but the last thing I want to do @ this point is argue with you about it.........

knockemdown, Dang right! That Nosler 6mm 55g bullet has a great BC. The std 243 should sling the 55's at 3900 or more with Win 760 or H 414 with blistering accuracy. There are no nippers and spinners when you shoot them with this load! Even shot in the back of the stomach, they fold up like a dead duck! Bullet Speed really helps on cutting down mistakes on leade when taking running shots, also.

A few years ago, I made some MEF HP in the 55g weight in .243 caliber. I shot them in in everything from 6ppc, 6 BR, 6/250, and 243 AI. The 55's at super speeds simply made ground squirrels disappear, squirrels were there one second and GONE the next!

Last week in my newest 6 BR, I shot the Nosler 55's at 3900 fps into tiny groups with 34.0g of AA2230 with 7 1/2 Primers, 28" 12" twist barrel...unreal accurate at 300 yds.

One of the really great things about hunting coyotes, is that you can shoot them with all kinds of really neat cartridges. Learning to switch barrels created a whole new world of possibilities becasue you only have one stock, trigger, scope, etc. It allows the possibility of a lot of custom barrels on the same action.

The straight 6mm Rem has a case volume of 54gr of water... the 6mm AI has a case volume of 63.5!

63.5 divided by 54 is =equal to 1.1759259259259259259259259259259.

That is 17.59% more volume... what's the point and where do you get 9%? New math?

Your computer should have a calculator build into it - go to "Start", then "All programs", then "Accessories", then hit "Calculator"... try it, it's fun!

Or is this just another "disagree with me for the fun of it" comment??

Whatever...
