Varmit Gun

What varmints are you gonna shoot (coyotes, prairie dogs)? Do you want heavy barrel? Savage FV12 with accu-trigger. Do you reload? 223 if you don't. 22-250 if you do. You can get the accu-trigger on the savage hunting rifles now. Highly recommend it. You can't beat the out of box accuracy and price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't reload and i'am not too much of a lover for scopes ether.I was thinking may be a .222 or .220 Swift? Is there some way that I can Get scope mounts that alow me to see under the scope for close shot to use my iron sights and also allow me to see throught the scope for further away shots?

The guns that i'am looking at are,Remington Model 597 Magnum LS .17 HMR, Marlin 17V Bolt Action Rifle , Mossberg SSi-One Single Shot Rifle .22-250 Rem , NEF Stainless Handirifles .223 Rem , Remington Model 700™ BDL Rifle with “Custom” Deluxe Stock (.222 Rem) , Savage 10 - FM Sierra Rifle (.243 Win).I'am not too sure which one to get out of these rifles.

hey varmit,I have the rem 597 in 17HMR & I love the accuracy but have had some issues with it feeding correctly, have sent it back to remington twice to get it fixed.
Overall nice gun, just to many prob's with a $300 gun to go through for me.
just bad luck i guess.

Of the calibers you listed, I would say that the 22-250, or 243 is your best bet. Savage make some nice shooting lower priced rifles.

So now i'am down to the .17 in a single shot or bolt action, the .243 in a single shot or a bolt action and a .22-250 in a single shot or a bolt action. Also how big of holes do each of these guns make?

No simple, one-size-fits-all answer. Size of the hole depends on weight of the bullet, construction of bullet, speed of powder being burned, distance from animal, body mass of animal, location of bullet strike, etc., etc.

Well I'd think the .17 is a great varmint gun, but the .243 has a dual purpose. If your worried about holes - what kinda varmints you plan on shootin at anyway?

Varmit:

Not sure if you are aware, but the 17 HMR is not quite in the same category as the 22-250, 243, etc. The 17 HMR is a rimfire round with a light bullet and in no way is it a 250-300 yard varmint rifle.

If you want a 250-300 yard rifle in 17 caliber, you need to look at a 17 MK4 or a 17 Remington. The MK4 is strictly a handloader proposition and the 17 Rem is a factory round, so ammo is available for thew 17 Remington.

I know that the .17 will not shot 200 yards.I'am going to hunt foxes wolves ect.. for there hide while I trap and I also want a gun that will hit prarie dogs or ground hogs at about 200 yards. The .222 is a nice little gun but i'am still a little worried of how big of hole it will make.

you said foxes and wolves. i would want something with alot more punch than a .17 for a wolf. i would go the .22-250 or .243 and not worry about the hide damage. i have shot several coyotes with my .22-250 and havent found an exit hole yet. on p-dogs and g-hogs the .22-250 makes a mess of them but i havent found a use for their hides anyway. just my .02 cents. also you can get see thru scope mounts for your set up but i would not recommened them. it is best to mount a scope about an 1/8 to a 1/4 off of your barrel.....blake

222 is good not a big hole when you use the right bullets most of the time the bullet won't come out. i like the 223 myself, yet if you handload you might want to look into a 17rem the bullets will hardly ever exit the animal

Well then how big of a enter hole do these guns make?Know i'am pretty much down to the .222, .22-250 or the .223.Also what kind of scopes do you recomend that can take alot of beatting without getting out of line ect...

222 or .223 and Leupold. Results from a 22-250 will not be what you want to see for saving hides. However, the others can tear one up pretty bad too.

I have never used anything but a .22 on my trap lines and they do a great job if you want the hides. It would put a wolf down as well as anything else if your worried about a wolf a 22 mag pistol would work too. I'm not sure your going to find everything you've listed in one gun.LOL
