Was just wandering what yall use for groundhog hunting. I use .22, .22mag, 17hmr, .222, and this comming spring will try the 17m2 since i just bought one.
Our version out here is rock chucks. I use mostly a .22-250AI and a 6AI on them. But there is a hardly a rifle in my safe that hasn't whacked at least a couple. I like to take quite a few rifles out with me. I think of them like golf clubs. Pull the one out of the truck that seems most appropriate for the situation. Used my .17 Mach IV on them quite a bit last year. And whacked a few with the .20BR as well. Killed a bunch with the .22BR's too. Oh yeah, almost forgot the .243AI, killed a truck load with it. Few here and there with the .221 also.
If by groundhog you mean woodchuck that's my cup of tea. There's nothing I enjoy more although places to hunt them have certainly dwindled in the past 10-15 years. For the most part .222Rem. or .222Rem.Mag. will do the job. If it's necessary to really reach out there a ways I go to .22-250 or .243Win. If wealth were determined by varmit rifle ownership I'd be a rich man. Alas, it's just not so. Best wishes.
Currently using a Cooey 600 .22LR with a Bushy fixed 4x. kills them very dead. waiting on Savage to hurry up and get the model 40 out so I can build a .22K-Hornet.
will take out my .450 Marlin and the Sako .375H&H this season for kicks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I use a 22-250 99% of the time but I have used my .308 just to spice things up. It's hard to beat the destructive force of a 22-250 plus the range is just amazing!!!
I use about anything w/ a trigger. I have a 17Ackley Hornet, 218Bee, 2-222Rem's, 22-250, 220Swift, 243, 6BR, 6.5x55, 45ACP, 45LC, 20 & 12gauges, & various 22Lr's. Plus there is a crossbow & a muzzle loader that I just got this deer season. You can't tell g'hog hunting is my passion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Well it sounds like you want to try the new 17 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
That 222 will do the job no doubt. If your concerned with report so will the 22wmr at closer range. Good shootin'
bea175; not to rattle your cage but I noticed somethinin your sig.
Varmint Hunter Ass. ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
When I was a teenager, I used 22 lr a lot. Later I aquired a 22-250 and soon the Contender bug hit me.
I don't hunt woodchucks anymore for a couple of reasons. One, it seems that many of the small pastures that I roamed in my youth are now suburbs.
Second, something happened to the woodchucks. They sort of disappeared from southern Massachusetts and northeastern Connecticut.
I used to hunt woodchucks in New York with a 22-250 and 243 Winchester untill the Damm Coyotes came around,After that you could not find one to save your life,And of course They P----- me off and I started shooting them instead. Not as much fun because they are smarter than the chucks and harder to find.
lots a chucks here,I use NEF .223 and get 20 rds for $4,lotsa chucks here.Just scoped it with a Bushnell sportsman 4x12x40 $70, and after shooting it I'm [url=wonderihttp://www.predatormastersforums.com/ubb/icons/icon12.gif
I use a 22WMR for the short shots, a 22-250 set up for regular pills from 40-55 grian pills, another 22-250 8 twist for 68-80 grain pills for a little longer stuff, and last spring I had a 243AI built to take care of the longest g-hogs. Longest witnessed kill to date: 880 yards 1 shot kill, 243AI with the 70 grain blitzking going 3850fps zeroed at 200. I love shooting those whistlepigs!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
