well I’ll tell you what I love to just get back about 300 yards and pick em off with whatever rifle i have with me but I think the finest way to hunt the is with a turkey gun and load. you have to get about 50yds or so to get them and boy is it a lot of fun they can be tuff boogers to stalk and if your a deer hunter this is great practice

Used to use a lot of rifles for it-- Fact is, that's the 1st article i ever sold-- "Woodchuck Shooting in MD". Back in '94 i think-- a 1 pager Fur, Fish, Game. $75

Now i use Custom Sp. Handguns on rockchucks out yonder out here-- 6.5-284, and this "season", it'll be my Striker .243 WSSM-- and long, skinny bullets for long-range.

pheww...glad to know i'm not the only psycho

edited to say, the only difference is i use a weatherby markV synthetic and reloaded nosler ballistic tips

I started off as a kid, back in the 50s, using a single shot Remington .22LR. Eventually I graduated to a .22 Mag, or whatever Deer rifle I happened to be using at the time.

Now I'm back to a single shot. A #1V Ruger .204 with the medium heavy stainless barrel and a Kepplinger single set trigger. On top is a Leupold VX III 6 1/2 X 20 X 40mm, with a custom, range compensating reticle from Premier Reticles, looks like spider silk with fly speck pips.

It's a joy to shoot. I particularly like watching through the scope as the 'hog flys backwards spread eagle, when the 40gr V-Max hits them. No doubt about a hit there either.

Bacova,

Thanks for the perspective, I am begining a search for a special purpose varmint gun. The 204R is on my short list. I have not had a Ruger #1 for several years, but they are great weapons. Could you share more on the: "range compensating reticle from Premier Reticles" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Also, have you shot a Yote yet with the 40 grn? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The best thing about hunting groundhog or anything is being able to see through the scope after the triger is pulled. The big guns 223 and up I cant see anything to much recoil.
22 hornet custom loaded is my favorate

Colorado, Sorry for the delay in answering your question about the custom reticle.
I ordered the rifle last Jan. and received it in May. As soon as it came in I had my dealer ship it to Premier Reticles in Winchester, VA. I purchased a Loopy VX III from them and they fired the rifle 10 times with 40 gr Hornady V-Maxs, chronoed it and did whatever magic they have up their sleeve. They were able to calculate where to place the pips on a custom reticle to compensate for bullet drop all the way out to 600 yds. They also installed the set trigger. They guaranteed the range pips to be dead on with the 40 gr bullet and they were right. They shipped it back to my dealer, where I did the paperwork and picked the rifle up.
I took it up to my mountain house that same day, checked the zero at 100 yds and went groundhog shooting. The next day I found their range pips to be dead on out to 400 yds. I never tried farther, but I dropped a g'hog at just under 400 and hit him right where I aimed. There was no wind and I had a rock solid rest.
They only had my rifle about a week and the job was done. It was back to my dealer in less than 2 weeks from the original shipping date.
I dealt with Chris Thomas at....

They offer a wide selection of custom reticles. They don't have to be new scopes, but they DO have to be Loopys.
Here's a link directly to the page that describes my reticle. The picture is misleading, in that the hairs are like silk and the pips are like flyspecks, just like I siad in my earlier post. I've had no trouble seeing them though.

Concerning those custom reticles u guys are talking about, i used to shoot a custom Ruger 77 in .22-250 AI, that i was getting 4350 mv out of a 40 Nosler. I sent the scope i was using a Tasco World Class 3.5-10X to TK LEE. He put in three dots that corresponded to 300, 400 and 500 yds. for my trajectory. I loved it, and it was responsible for a few long-range dogs a # yrs. ago.

I used to think the 40's were dead beyond 500 or so, but recently i had a shootoff in a turkey shoot with a guy that was shooting a Savage bolt gun in .223AI, 40 V-Max, against my 6.5-284 XP 140 A-Max, and he beat me on an 8" silhouette @ 600 yds.-- pretty amazing, i thought.

I hunt groundhogs in the N.C. mountains and have shot them with several of the the .22 centerfire rifles. My favorite is the 17hmr. I have heard guys on this site say that it does not have enough killing power for them though. I've killed close to 50 in the last 2 years with my Marlin 17v and have not had any problems with it yet. I also hunt with a reminton vls in .223 for the longer shots.
