Weatherby Vangaurd Varmint Special in 204

Well goin to buy a weatherby vanguard varmint special in 204 tommorow. Anyone have one? Do you like it? I realy like the stock on them and its a weatherby so you cant go wrong. What scope should i put on it im lookin at $300 max for the scope. Im gettin the gun for $650. Anybody have one and if u do u like it?
 
I think you are paying too much for the rifle. There is a Sportsman's Warehouse in Lafayette, Indiana and they should sell those for like $550 at the most. BTW, they shoot great, I had one in .22-250 that I just sold like 2-3 days ago because I was going to a lighter approach. It liked the 40 grain pills. It could put 5 shots in the 1/2 to 3/4 range at 100 yards. I bedded it and mostly free floated the barrel though. I think if it is going to be an all purpose rig put a 4.5x14 power scope on it. If you are going to use it for prairie dogs put a 6x18 or something more powerful. Good Luck and check prices... I think you might be paying too much just for the gun IMHO. I think that Model is actually a Rifle built by Howa for Weatherby. I may be wrong but ask around before you buy, I have heard pros and cons about Howas. I dont own one. $650 does seem a bit high to me as well. Check the links below for a more realistic price. These rifles are a bargain considering the price VS quality.

A good possibility for a scope might be the Nikon BuckMasters 4.5-14X40 Side Focus with the Mil-dot or Nikoplex. I would stay away from the BDC reticle on a Varmint rifle. It's $289.95 with free UPS at the site below.

Dodgeman the Vanguard is actually built by Howa. That's not so bad though as they are a very accurate rifle. If you like the fit and feel you will be pleased with the 204. I would shop around a bit though, you can get better pricing.

I shoot the 204 in a CZ 527 Varmint and am certainly pleased with this super light recoiling cartridge. It seems to kill coyotes as well as my old 22-250 did with light enough recoil that I can watch the bullets hit thru the scope.

As for scopes, I'd suggest a low power variable if your going to use it as a calling rifle. A 2 by 7 or 3 by 9 works very well, especially for a coyote that sneaks in close.

When winter is over I change out the 3 by 9 that's on mine for an 8 by 32 variable for grounds squirrels and rock chucks in the spring and summer. When I start back calling in the fall the lower power scope goes back on. Nothing wrong at all with two different scopes for two different uses.
 
I already went to sportsmans and the guy didnt have one in stock. He said he could special order me one but it would be well over 500. So idk. I realy like the weatherby compared to all the other 204s ive looked at.
 
Yeah, I wasn't sure if they carried that caliber, but I do know they carry .223 and .22-250. I was hoping for your sake that they did. So...I'm sorry if I made you go on an unneeded trip. Hope you find one as you will enjoy it.
 
Well went there yesterday. I narrowed it down to the ruger charger or the Weatherby. Ended up gettin the ruger charger cause it will be better in the long run especially the way ammo prices have went up. So i got a burris scope on the charger and we shot it today. I recommend this gun to anyone. It is the most fun gun to shoot and its cheap to shoot so you can shoot it all u want. Cant wait to test it out on the groundhogs. Maybe they will come out with one 17HMR. Now that would be a sweet gun.
 
I got the ruger charger. the reason is cause the 204 is exspensive to shoot and i dont feel like buying all the reloading stuff. Ruger charger will still kill groundhogs and coyotes just as a 204 would. And the charger is a lot more fun to shoot and can sit all day and shoot it if i want unlike the 204.

The 204 can be a little spendy to shoot, valid point, as is the reloading equipment.

You are correct, the 22LR can be fun to shoot.

The part about a 22LR killing coyotes and groundhogs just as a 204 would is a joke. You obviously have very little experience with either. You'll have a few wounded coyotes running around, that is, if you ever connect. I also believe on average, you'll see g-hogs crawling off to die a slow death which is cruel.

The 204 will easily and cleanly kill these animals. Coyotes have an incredible ability to survive gun shot wounds, the 22LR is no weapon to use for clean kills unless you are standing over the trap they are in.

You bought a nice new pistol, enjoy it for what it is, just don't expect it to do what a 204 will do /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Fun? Yes. As fun as watching explosions, arial acrobatics, and back flips on prairie dogs and chucks... Not in my book. And I wouldn't even consider "Huntin" coyotes with a .22 LR. You'll soon see for yourself.

You have some strange ideas. That thing may be a fun plinker but coyote hunters on this board could tell you no way is it a coyote gun. I shot my first-ever rockchuck with a 10-22, found out real quick that it wasn't much of a chuck gun.
 
I was at a gunshow once and there was an older guy there and he said he used to shoot deer with a 22 mag. He just said you had to shoot them in the head. Im sure a 22 will kill a coyote if you hit it in the head. And with groundhogs im pretty sure it will kill them.
