I went calling and got eaten alive by mosquitos and big flys on my first set. After about 25 minutes of standing there in a cloud of bugs biting my ears, forehead, and around my eyes I stopped the caller and walked back to the truck.

Pretty close to the truck I saw a bear out of the corner of my eye about 25 yards from me in a small opening near the cover to my left. His head was down eating grass broadside to me but there was alot of branches in my shooting lane.

Really sneaky and slow I put down my backpack, got the trigger stick tripod ready, and snuck down the trail until I had a clear broadside shot. He dropped, and I put 3 more in him remembering the article on here about the fella who got attacked walking up to the bear assuming he was dead.

Anyways it's 2:15 am time for a shower and some sleep. Have a good day guys

How did I miss this?

I'm glad you finally got you a bear. I told my buddy that if you didn't end up getting one that I was going to personally fly up there and tie one to a tree for you.

Congrats

Congrats! You mind letting us know what sounds/caller you used to call it in?
The way it worked out was after my unsuccessful calling session (due to the bug bites) I walked back to the truck to regroup or possibly go home. The thing is Slagiatt hooked me up with a book that I had just finished reading a day or 2 before, and I was thinking about him, his tactics he posted on here, and the info in the book. He said he still hunts his way into the woods which he calls, and often gets his bears on the way in before even starting to call. So I was moving real slow on the way in, and still moving a bit like that coming back out. It worked.

But as far the calls I used, I was using a rabbit distress that day. The reason was I called one in that didn’t come close enough for a shot last fall with lightning Jack so I know 100% for sure a rabbit distress can work here.

A few weeks prior, I used Slagiatts tactic of fawn bleats. Not distress but just bleats. He said it flat out works and they don’t come in with much caution, they just come in. The fawn bleats didn’t work but I was cold calling in an area with no sign too, there wasn’t any greenup here yet and no fresh sign so I just tried it out anyways.

Going forward I’ll be mostly experimenting with his fawn bleats tactic and bear sounds including cub distress. If I’m not getting success after giving them an honest shot I’ll go back to various distresses including rabbit, moose calf, pigs, goats, and so on.

Don't think he was going anywhere after the head shot. Awesome to get a bear without bait or dogs.
I think the first one got him a few inches behind his front leg around the middle, I saw a hole there when I skinned him. He went down but was super “shaky”. I was scared he would get up and run, and all I could confirm from my viewpoint was his general front/head side, middle, and back butt side.

So I fired the 2nd shot towards his from shoulder/neck area. That one made the shaking stop.

I walked up a bit closer maybe 15 yards and thought, are you gonna stand around waiting for a death moan? Or go up and poke him hoping he doesn’t suddenly attack? So I fired another one in his front shoulder area and he didn’t move.

The 4th shot was to the head from 5 yards to really really make sure so I could get on with skinning and getting the meat cooled down right now asap
