Congrats! You mind letting us know what sounds/caller you used to call it in?
The way it worked out was after my unsuccessful calling session (due to the bug bites) I walked back to the truck to regroup or possibly go home. The thing is Slagiatt hooked me up with a book that I had just finished reading a day or 2 before, and I was thinking about him, his tactics he posted on here, and the info in the book. He said he still hunts his way into the woods which he calls, and often gets his bears on the way in before even starting to call. So I was moving real slow on the way in, and still moving a bit like that coming back out. It worked.
But as far the calls I used, I was using a rabbit distress that day. The reason was I called one in that didn’t come close enough for a shot last fall with lightning Jack so I know 100% for sure a rabbit distress can work here.
A few weeks prior, I used Slagiatts tactic of fawn bleats. Not distress but just bleats. He said it flat out works and they don’t come in with much caution, they just come in. The fawn bleats didn’t work but I was cold calling in an area with no sign too, there wasn’t any greenup here yet and no fresh sign so I just tried it out anyways.
Going forward I’ll be mostly experimenting with his fawn bleats tactic and bear sounds including cub distress. If I’m not getting success after giving them an honest shot I’ll go back to various distresses including rabbit, moose calf, pigs, goats, and so on.
