!!!!!!!!WHAT ARE THE BEST COVER SCENTS???????

I have had great success with the product Forget the Wind, in Coytotes, Deer, and Elk.

Trappers have been fooling a coyotes nose for many years.

Attractants work as well, like rabbit urine.

Saying that you can't ever fool a coyotes nose is like saying we could never put a man on the moon.

Those long nose doe's noses are the ones that are hard to fool.

You should be asking this question on an archery board and you will see where there are MANY guys that are fooling animal's noses.

A coyote is not some super animal, you just have to confuse their nose enough to where they respond to their ears(dyiing animal sounds) and territorial instincts of another predator being in their territory.

I and my brother have fooled many coyotes noses on a consistant basis. Wonder what we are doing different than the guys that tried it and failed??? The answer would be consistancy, putting on Forget the Wind is like a Religion.

When we hunted Mexico and taking the large numbers of coyotes we hunted two different ways, out of the truck and walking out making stands, usually in three or 4 man hunts. When walking out making stands on the ground, there are a differnt set of rules than making stands out of the back of the truck.

Needless to say, being in an area with a lot of coyotes will allow you to wear a Santa Clause suit and still come up with pretty good success. If you are fortunate to live in an area with high populations of yotes, then you will come to a dramaticly diffent conclusion than if you have to hunt in an area where coyotes are few and far between and extremely smart.

If you are interested in learning about attractants and how trappers cover their scent, then there is a magazine called Fur, Fish, and Game.

Good luck!

I don't believe much in cover scents, but I do believe strongly in attractant scents. One of the best ones I have ever used is a big male's mate that you have just killed. Drag her a couple hundred yards, hide your ecaller beside her, and set up where your scent doesn't enter into the equation, higher ground if available. Give him a few minutes to get over all the excitement and give him a mixture of female howls and ki-yi's. I have had that work a bunch of times where I called in a pair and couldn't get them both right off. The reverse of this will work too.

Trappers don't fool a coyotes nose, they use it to attract a coyote to a set. They are ever so conscious of they're own scent that some wear hip boots to put in a dry land set or have a kneeling cloth. They never handle traps bare handed (water sets excepted) or handle scent bottles with their setting gloves. You can have a trap with dirt over it and the ground sprayed with coyote urine, gland lure and skuck attractor but if the trap has any scent you'll find it dug up or see where the coyote just backed away from the set and sometimes even a Turd deposited near by. Coyotes and fox have incredible noses. Even my hunting dogs will keep finding birds after getting sprayed in the face by a skunk

I am looking for some input on what everyone thinks the best cover scent is?

rkhood,

When in doubt, get a bit more scientific about it. There is a great article in the April 2009 edition of Predator Extreme entitled "The Coyote's Nose" by Dr. Charles R. Shawley.

Here is the link:

http://www.predatorxtreme-digital.com/predatorx/20090304/?pg=5#pg49

Dr. Shawley's first conclusion at the end of paragraph one (albeit simple field observation and nonscientific) speaks volumes. He then goes on to his scientific explanation of how coyotes detect odor, coyote nose structure/biology and scent receptors, how your scent is distributed in the air, why scent elimination sprays, garments and musk/urine cover scents don't work or are limited in effectiveness at best, and how misting with a very specific mix can be effective.

If a canine can smell cancer inside a human body, their nose must be taken seriously.

My field observations were exactly the same as Dr. Shawley's. He does a mighty fine of job of explaining why. Furthermore, now that I know what kind of a nauseating mixture I'd need for effective misting, I'll pass.

Regards,

Mark Healy

I'd say skunk spray works the best.I spray that, red fox urine, and raccoon urine but I always make sure to have the wind on my side.

i use.....FABREZE.......extra strength......it pretty well covers the stench of a gamey coyote on my truck's seat covers. ( post said " cover" scent....LOL )

You put coyotes INSIDE your truck?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'd rather shove my head up a buffalo. I can barely deal with the stench in my garage when I skin them. You're a braver man than I.
