What gun to buy for timber wolf hunt????

I have got a remington 22/250 788 model, killed lots of coyotes with it, also have .35 calber marlin.........probably this one won,t reach out to far .....I saw wolf hit on the Highway near Hearst ontario.had to be close to 200lb....I took a video of the carcass......I sold my .243 maybe I should have kept it...but to much damage to the fur...but sure dropped them like jello...any suggestions on ammo or rifle will be appreciated
 
Nothing wrong with the 243. The only thing wrong is seems like a lot of folks like to shhot those little pills in them that blow up on aminals. Yep, hit that sucker with a bullet going 3600fps+.

Use heavier bullets with good construction and the 243 is capable of bringing down a lot of big animals.

My wife killed 3 Antelope with her 243. The longest distance being 305 yds.

The 243 does not draw flies.

Your 22-250 will do the job but as was said use a hevier than usual bullet 70 - 80 Grn soft point stay away from the light fast explosive bullets. For a 243 I would still go with 70-85 or 90 grain bullets but I think 80 as a heavy as they come in the .224 diameter

Well the 22-250 with a 14 twist is no wolf gun that's for sure. The 223 with 64 grain soft point would be the minimum and the 243 or 7-08 would probably be my first choices but hey, I don't hunt wolves. With my collection I would simply step up to the 308 with 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and be happy.

To bad you sold your 243. It's just about the perfect mid range caliber IMO.

Never killed a Wolf but if things go well here in No. Idaho I may be able to amend that statement in the next year or two. If I do get the chance I'll take my 243.

The shame of it is that the 22-250 could be a good long range caliber. But those 14" barrels the factorys use limit it to shooting short range bullets. The same can be said about the Swift. In most factory offerings the 223 is a longer range caliber than either the 22-250 or the Swift.

Me too. My last 22-250 is now a 6mm Rem, and a new M70 HBV in 250, that I just picked up is going to get a new, fast twist tube.

I have a Browning Safari BAR in 25-06 for an expected trip to Idaho next year.

For me....There's no reason to not have the extra RPM's in reserve...I've shot 50grnr's through my 1-8" 22-250....It probably wouldn't win any bench rest matches, but under real-world/field conditions even the 50's hold better groups than I can take advantage of.
 
I would think the 50 vmax would still do the trick. That is what I plan on running out of my 223ai now that wolves are legal in WY.
