what is it ?

i have a pic with a deer by that same log if that helps size it up better.and the ohio dnr tells me we have no cougar mountain lion in ohio so i have no idea and i don't hadrly ever see a stray cat around live out in the boone docks.and yes jay that is oak leaves.

I agree with Tony. Appears to be a bobcat to me, just doesn't have any spots on it's back which is not unusual. In my opinion, the smaller bone structure of legs and small feet indicate that. Lions have big feet and they "look" big. Sure would like to dump my hounds on him...see if they could make him climb or fight. Had one treed for about 30 seconds this morning. He was too fresh and jumped when all of the dogs went to jumping around the tree. I had a heck of a race til he went over an 8 ft. deer proof fence. That cat got real lucky.
 
My first impression was mountain lion. However, after seeing the same picture with the deer's head in it, it doesn't look big enough. It's probably a bobcat even though it doesn't really look like one. You should take a yardstick or tapemeasure out there and photograph it from the same angle. Nice catch anyway. Of course I.O.N. could be right, I here he's pretty good with a bo staff.
 
The log doesn't appear to be more than 13-14 inchs in diameter +-? If thats close then the cat isn't much different in hight. Not nearly big enough for a bobcat or cougar. Sure has a cougar looking head profile though.

That's exactly what they want you to belive. The food resources in the midwest is plentiful, and they have been sighting all over. Even some pictures taken like outside Chicago. Just my .02

It looks very much like a bobat to me and nothing like a mountain lion. Notice the black marking on the back of the right ear.

I see a lot of bobcats that are not very spotted.
 
House cat - Why do I say that? ...the range trigger on a "common" game camera is 15-20 yards (advertised is different) and this cat takes 1/3 of the picture, common flash range states 10 yards... note the cat is half distance of the flash. Between the "Ohio Cougar" being a very rare (if even possible), and a "spotless bobcat?"... look at the small paws... I've come across big Ferrals and Ranch kittys in the 20-25 pound range and way away from ranches. Here are a few questions: How far away is the nearest residence? What is the motion detection set for? What is the mm of the lens? How far away is the log? I think once these facts are known, a far better group opinion would be realized. If I were to bet - Id say House Cat. If Yellowhammer says it's a bobcat, however... measurements would certainly help.
 
Im not saying it is or is not a couger but here are some pics of cats that look similar to mountain lions. You can clearly see muscles and large forearms compared to the paws and even black tips on the tail. It could either be a young cougar or a large cat. Of course you can clearly tell these are not cougars but in black and white in the right setting and with a grainy picture at night, well Im sure you could get one to look like a cougar.

All bobcats don't have spots, and sometimes, they don't show on in pictures especially taken at night with flashor IR (as that one appears to be)

Here is one I took that appear almost white due to the flash.

When it is a mountain lion, there is usually little doubt.

I have only seen a couple bob cats in the wild in my area and no mountain lions but when I was younger I had the cat from [beeep]. He went 30lbs and was built like a tank, all muscle mass, looked pretty mean. He used to kill woodchucks all the time and drag them back to the house. Got his tail bit off by something so he had a little stub. My mom had a timber wolf hybred and it back my cat into a corner one day and the cat decided to fight. My cat got beat up pretty good but not without drawing a lot of blood from the hybred. My thought is it's a house cat from [beeep] like I had.
 
ok guys im going to go get some info on the site this weekend i'll be right by there when im bow hunting sat a.m. not sure of the size of log or distance from cam.but i will do my best to try to recreate the angle and try to get size of log.
 
No tufts on the jowls,either. I've seen Canada Lynx with small tufts on the jowls but there was something more substantial there than what I see in this pic. Leaning heavily towards young cougar.

I've seen lightly spotted bobcats but I've never seen one that lacked the bars on the front legs.
