Whats a good all around 6mm caliber?

OK I ordered my first suppressor yesterday (Liberty Constitution w/ 6mm hole for my 6x45) and being I got 6-8 months lead time before i see the can, Im thinking about a build on a old Remington 700 BDL with a 25-06 barrel on it now. What would be a good no nonsense 6mm caliber that would preform well on whitetail and the occasional prarie dog hunt? Id like something a little hotter than a .243 but not something that cost a arm and a leg. Ive heard good things about a 6-06.

I rebarreled a Remington Sendero 25-06 to a 6mm06. It's a simple process to neck the 25-06 case down to 6mm. Since you want more velocity than a .243, that is a great round. The 6mm-284 is also a good one. I have heard good things about the .243 AI, but have never owned or shot one. I shoot 75 gr. V-Max at 3621 fps in my 6mm06, but have had it faster - over 3700. I just found good accuracy at 3621, trajectory difference is negligible by going a little faster, so I just stayed there. I'll take accuracy over velocity any day.

Only problem with going hotter then a 243 is your barrel life is going to go pretty quick. Since you said something that doesn't cost a arm and leg you may want to look at that side of it too.

I myself would go for 243AI in a 1-8 or 7.5 twist shooting the 105 or 115.

I'd stick with the 243. Will do exactly what you're asking.

Im just wondering what makes it "much" better? The loading manuals show the .243 and the 6 mm Rem almost the same for velocities?

I do not see what is wrong with a 25-06. .257 to .243 There are a lot of great .257 bullets and with the new powders. You should have a fire stick. Clean copper out of the old barrel and get a new trigger. With the extra money you save buy a PD rifle. Get yourself a rifle in 221 fireball or 223rem and fill a space in your rifle rack and smile.

Ornery, he said he wanted something a little hotter and the 6mm rem. is plus has a larger case capacity and can be AI'ed as well.

Loading manuals are biased. The gun world has a media, and manuals are part of that and opinions get stuck in the writings.

The 6mm will run a full 100fps faster than the 243win. when hand loaded. The shooting world has accepted the 243win, but the 6mm is a "red headed step child". Load for both, and you will see the difference.

The 6mm is about 5% more than the 243win. The 6mm is a largely forgotten cartridge because of exactly what you just said " The loading manuals show the .243 and the 6mm Rem almost the same for velocities", but they are very different, indeed.

I'm thinking you might be happier with the 260!

Just how in the world is the 6MM a better caliber than the .243, if this is true than why are there about 100 .243's to every one 6MM. I do realize, despite the reloading manual's, that the 6mm has about 100fps on the 243, one of my good friends is a 6mm finatic but shooting them both at pdogs I have never seen much difference, I know that when the 6mm came out they had a slow twist and wouldnt stabilize the heavier bullets and maybe did cause them to never be as popular as the .243, but I still would like to know why they are so much better. Please enlighten me.

The 6mm can not be a better cal than a .243 since they are one in the same.

IIRC, .244 Rem and the .243 Win hit the "real world " about the same time. When this happens one always takes off and the other is left behind. Much like the .300 WSM trumped the .300 SAUM .
I think the .244(6mm)Rem and the .243 Win had diff twist rates, with one being favored more.

I had a 243 for a long time and I also had a 6mm rem.. I kept the 6mm because it is a 243+.. I'd like to know why it didn't take off better also.. It really is a superior round .. In my opinion. Common sense tells me that it was about money somehow.. Good luck on your decision..!!!
