What's everyone using for bug spray?

I've tried 2 years of hunting without using spray but for the last month I'm getting torn up by mosquitos besides the gnats and can't take it anymore. What's a good spray that works?
 
This is some stuff that I picked up at Cabela's a few years ago and have no problem with Mosquitoes or Ticks when down in the MO river bottoms (and they are thick there)...It's a rub on creme that I use sparingly....and keep my clothing openings closed...

Military issue DEET works. Very well. But it kinda stings! The stuff Grant posted is a bit nicer to the skin.


I treat my hunting clothes with permethrin. It works well and stays in the clothes for 6-8 washes.

But the best thing is a Therm-a-cell. They're a bit expensive to start, but WORK!
 
Try a repellent with Picaridin as the active ingredient. I think it works as well as DEET but is odorless which is good for hunting.
 
12hr zee medical repellent with just a pinch of McNess anticeptic. Works great on everything. If the nats are not out and going to be sitting in one place very long then I use a thermocell.

Last year I finally undertook the task of refinishing my 10/22 stock. In 1987 We had went down to Puerto Rico and the military had given us some small green bottles of bug lotion to use. Got back to Florida and put some on and grabbed my 10/22 and in an instant the finish was gone where my hand had been. That was some strong stuff!

Dumb question but with the thermacell I guess you have to keep the unit upwind of you to have any success?

I mix up my own permethrin to treat my clothes. You can find it at farm supply stores around the stuff for horses and stables. I've seen ticks land on my leg and run and jump off! Also keeps the chiggers away. I use the Thermacell for the flying ones. Here the exact stuff I buy and the store I goto locally. You can check out the Tom Sawyer label to see what percent you need to mix it to. Going by memory I think you want 0.10% check the label for ratio to get you there.

Therma Cell is the best deal, I just throw it down under my seat. If it's breezy enough to blow the stuff away, then the bugs probably aren't going to be all that bad any way.

Watch the Deet, it will melt some types of plastic, I ruined a watch with the stuff. I'm sure it will ruin the finish on a stock.
 
The key is cover all your skin! Long sleves, long pants, gloves and netting over your head. I was watching motion on LWN and the guy hasa jacket made of netting with a full head covering that zips on and off it looked really sweet! The spray is a secondary defense. Sometimes it is hot and miserable to cover up but its better then getting bit!
 
Nothing worse than trying to sit absolutely still and having gnats and mosquitos buzzing in your face and ears.
 
anything with .05 % permitherin. Put it on you clothes boots and hat, not ticks or bugs for 2 weeks. The ONLY styff thaworks IMO.

I use the Sawyers Brand - yellow bottle.
make sure your clothes dry before wearing.
This stuff kills ticks - not only repels them.

This is what we issue at work to people walking transmission right of ways all day. A tick bite that turns into a medically treated injury is expensive and therefore hard on our workers comp insurance rates. So we take no prisoners. Best stuff we have found anywhere.
