this year i have got several customs from bearmanrick and tj
i have always used many elk calls when calling. I've got one from ty yote that has been used with great success already and am looking forward to trying all my new ones
my favorite production call are the sleazy cow for aggressive calling premos cow girl for calmer cow calls then I'll use the hoochie and Carlton's push calls to sound like many elk.
as far as bugles i still like the e.l.k.s larynx with a tube.
i also like the cow calf call but i can't think of who makes it[its a knight and hail], its open reed on both ends with a bowl in the middle.
then the fighting cow, estrus cow and all the others.
the only one i haven't liked is the mac daddy to easy to mess up on for me.
anyone who knows me knows i like them all.
lets hear what ones you guys are packing to elk camp with you this year?

I use the Primos diaphram's alot. Also a big fan of the Berry Sleazy cow call. I've got and use the primos hyperlip single with tone converter, although modify it a bit by opening up the holes in the tone converter. For a bit of a louder cow call, I use the green lil' dog call quite a bit as well. This year I have b&w ebony cow call from Tjones that I'm looking forward to using, and also have a custom cow call from TT in the mail as we speak. As far as bugles, I love the Berry Thunder Bugle (white and red reeds) with the collapsable tube. I've use many others (primos, abe & sons, power bugle, etc. but all sound way to fluty, if that's even a word). Also like the tried and true diaphram and grunt tube. One of the things, I'd like to see is more of the custom builders here making more cow calls, out of better materials. I'm not neccessarily looking for sound improvement as much having a nice call out of nice materials.

As far as which is my favorite...how can a call that looks like this not be my favorite. (Although I haven't seen the TT call yet)

elk_custom_calls.jpg

some are tj's some are catwackers and some are ricks and the last one is marks.

that is moseley 342" bull its a head mount at his house.its his 2nd bull
i didn't mind him moving out but did he have to take both his elk mounts with him?
we got his first elk mounted for him its a 280" but was his first elk.
now he also has a 332" euro mount out of his 3rd bull.
now he want a giant muley but he keeps passing on 180" bucks thats is a giant in my book. he is passing bucks with his bow i'd be tickled to death shooting with a rifle.
he is to much into inches and scores. i just think big medium and small. i'll look for pics of his other bulls.
1st bull

my living roo sure got bigger when he moved out.
is nobody else calling elk this year?

I use a diaphragm exclusively. I just like having my hands free for cow calling when they get close. I don't practice as much as I should anymore but still seem to be able to make sounds close enough to elk to work.

diaphragms still gag me i have a bunch of them but have never gotten used to any of them.
i use the sleazy because i can hold it in my teeth

I carry mine tucked in my cheek all day. It is always ready. I will say that diaphragms aren't nearly as cool looking as the custom calls.

Cant use a diaphram call. I have tried and tried but I am with Casey. They all gag me. I would like to get some custom Elk calls but have never gotten aroung to it. I use numerous calls but the main two that have allowed me to kill 9 bulls and 1 cow in the last 10 years of bow hunting is the Primos Hyper Lip Single and the Carlton Fighting Cow Call. They are my "Go to calls". Also in my arsenal is a Hootchie Mama, A Primos Hyper Lip Double, A Bull Hooker, Primos Cow Girl and a Primos I MAKA DA BULL CRAZY (short range). My favorite bugle is the E.L.K.S. Power Bugle although I dont bugle much except to locate. Best archery bull to date is a 330" Bull.

crmiddleton, if the diaphram is gagging you I used to trim about 1/8" off around the back of them or more until it fits you just right. I used to use the double and triple reeds. I carry two different carlton cow calls and a hyper hot cow estrous call and an Abe and sons bugle. The more calls the better, makes you sound like a bunch of different cows.
Good luck this season.

Abe and Son Bugle tuned to a big bull, primos pack bugle to sound like a little bull, hyper lip single, critter call, hyper hot, several custon and self made calls, but mostly cow call with my lips.

drscott

Carltons fighten cow call. And the diaphram call is always in my cheek It makes cow, calf , big and little bull sounds growls and squels all hands free.

I about gave up bugling any more. Seems to have lost it's effectiveness. The most successful cal for me has been the simple lohman cow call. I also use a diaphragm call to make small bull squeals, etc. Seems to get a response from a bull coming to a cow call without spooking him off.

I always have the hootchie mama and always have a reed in my check, you can do anything from cow calls to bugles when you get good at it, usually have a selection of different reeds in my pocket but the primos single is my go to.

Abe and Sons is about the best bugle I have found. Set it up to sound like a spike or a raggy. Cow calls are more reliable for pulling them in. What sounds like more fun to you, a fight or a lady? Elk feel about the same.

wow this is a old post. pics are even older i like the pic of makayla and the big bull mount
she is now 8 yrs old
moseley with the elk cape when he was 14 too he is now 24
that may be the only picture of my wife ever taken without her hand in the way lol
