Whats your sidearm when your a hunting???

When I hunted two legged varmints I carried a Glock 21 w/ Hydra Shock 230 Grn. or Nyclad 230 Grn HP's and a Colt Gov. .380 in a ankle holster. Now that I don't do that anymore, I carry a Springfield Compact .45 or a Glock 30 or a Colt .357 Border Patrol or a Sig Pro .40 or a Ruger 22/45 . I don't big game hunt anymore and no one cares what you carry in Wyoming hunting P-dogs.

I guess I'm "Old School" I always have my old Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. And I do mean "old" This thing was my saddle gun for many years, & it probably only has 25% of the bluing left on it. But it'a a hellava' shooter!! Years ago I sent it to Mag-Na-Port & had it shortened to 6", Ported, Crowned, and the trigger & action slicked up. When I got it back, for the finishing touch I put a standard Blackhawk alloy grip frame on it which is a bit smaller & lighter giving it a perfect aiming balance for my hand!!

It's one of those personalized rigs that most people would probably hate...., but no matter, cause' I'll never part with!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I always have my 1911 45 ACP single stack Colt with me when I go hunting does not matter if its with the rifle or bow.

I also take the pistol with me when I go fishing as well.

Why?

Its not the jackal caracal kudu or black bass I am worried about.

Its those two legged jackal that awaits you any where even outside your gate.

When the bear was checking out my activities, I had a 20 ga shotgun with #6 shot for grouse...thats when the hand gun is better than the long gun...or when I am packing a .22 hornet for coyotes, and the mountain lion decides I'm the biggest rabit he has ever seen, and that I will feed him for a couple of weeks...thats when that .38 is a comfort...Kinda...

Stainless Ruger Super blackhawk 44 mag with a 4 5/8" barrel
I've used it deer hunting and killed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif several deer with it. After all these years the hammer still bloodies my knuckle when I shoot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. That short barrel and small handgrip makes it a real handful to shoot. The short barrel does makes it nice to carry.

Ruger 22/45 SS. I am always undergunned for the fight, I guess.
If I need more than that I just pack a couople more mags for the AR.

Depending on time of year and location, usually a S&W 19 with the first three loaded with 'snake shot' and the other three loaded with 158 gr .357 Speer Lawman soft point slugs.

If I'm out in PD country, then all six are snake shot. Those Lawman series cartridges will shatter concrete blocks at 25 yds and usually stop most 4 legged critters I would encounter.

I carry a Glock 29 10mm with hot Corbon ammo. One of these days I'll order some of that Double-Tap ammo. I carry this gun around town and when I'm in the woods.

I cary a sidearm when hunting mainly for snakes and quick quiet dispatch of anything wounded. Also a .22 round is signifigantly less expensive than a 25-06 cartridge. My Ruger goes with me on every and all hunting excursions. It is super accurate and the weight factor is negligable. I've shot various varmints, snakes, and birds out of ground blinds and walk hunting and still been effective during deer hunts with it for a long time. I used to carry a Ruger Super Blackhawk but it was just too heavy. The .38 S&W is my everyday cary.

When out for the birdies it's a Kimber 1911, but since my only big game firearm is a Super Redhawk in .454 Casull I think I'm covered there. I do recall reading something a guide said as far as a hand gun for back up in dangerous (brown/grizzly) bear country. I think he was only half joking when he said you're better off using the gun on yourself to spare yourself the agony, otherwise you may just [beeep] the bear even more, Ha Ha. I thought that was rather funny.

when you archery hunt elk and you have that big black bear show up. Arizona made it legal to carry a piatol 6" barrel or less this year. I use a s&w mod 19 357 4" barrel.
