Which $1000 Scope

I just don't understand how someone can recommend something without using it first. As far as scopes go, I think a lot of guys see the high price tag and assume "it must be good if it's $1000".

I have actually bt/dt and can tell you a lot of expensive scopes are just not that good, or at least not $500 more money good. Others are worth their high price tags. IMO it depends much upon their purpose.

Again, didn't mean to be a prick. It's just that I'm so good at it..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Smoked oyster pizza. Sounds like fuel for a sex machine. best stick with the lighter beer until after. Then switch to higher octane....

stanimals2, no my scope isn't going to save my life, it sure helps take the lives of alot of coyotes though the year in every kind of weather on the job. i like to carry nice stuff that i can depend on, sorry if i offended you but if its the way you say then its not "you are part of the problem", its we are all a part of the problem. lets just all stop buying stuff and that will fix it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif,i'm just kidding /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and yea i see your point

I'd bet my azz on a Leupold being more dependable than a Zeiss in rough conditions any day. So do most guides, PH's, and police/military units. But that is JMO. Even the Germans use S&B and not Zeiss or Swaro.

What makes you prefer the Zeiss? I realize it is just a hunting rifle....

Not sure what you might think it means, but I guess it qualifies as genuine first hand expeience.

The only Leupolds I have owned & used over the last 30+ years include:
4Xs (3)
6Xs (2)
8X
12X
1x-4x
2X-7X
3X-9X (3 or 4)
1.5X-5X (2)
2.5X-8X
4.5X-14X
2 or 3 pistol Leupys

I always thought the 3.5x-10x would be the Cats Pajams's.

Though I can't say my life ever depended on it they all, always worked great for me.

I have almost completed a complete metamorphosis to Burris. No regrets.

There you go.

My last comment was directed to Trapper2.

I won't comment on the Burris'. We broke more of them in 6 months than all leupolds combined in 15 years.

I have owned at least 25-30 Leupolds of a LOT of different flavors....

Well said! Can't disagree with any of that.

My Bride just called supper. Gotta go have a piece of "Smoked Oyster Pizza" and a bottle of "Bud Select"(my new first choice in adult beverages).

I bet neither will suit most but I like 'em. (-:

Who makes an $18,000.00 scope????? WOW

Maybe a $1000 dollars plus scope or several thousand dollar custom rifle or owning more than one rifle are not justifiable. But you know what, I don't feel a need to justify anything I do and I think many here are exactly the same.Used to but not anymore.
Can you justify a 500 luppypold over a 33 dollar tasco. In my experience probably not as I have had good results with both, except having to use luppypold customer service numerous times.( the only manufacturer whose customer service I have ever had to use).In a hobby, I don't know if anything is justifiable from a standpoint of return on investment. That I think is the definition of a hobby.

2muchgun, shot leupolds for twenty years and still have 5 or 6 of them, great scopes, just wanted to try something different and picked the ziess and so far its been great.

Elcan SP50D = $18000.

His has a little screen you can hook up to it and watch everything in the scope without actually putting your eye up to it. It also records and replays everything. He showed me his last coyote hunt on it. Showed the yote come in from 600yds until it got to 125 yds and he took it. Pretty cool stuff. I believe he said he paid $15K for it with the little monitor hook-up. Awesome piece of equipment......

Using exactly what you said as a guide, I think the answer is easy. Swarovski 4x12x50. Should be able to get one for $1,100 or under easy. Granted, for daytime work, I can shoot in a hunting situation with most anything. For deer, the last few minutes of light are crucial. This is where the expensive scopes shine. If you hunt alot, then I say it is worth every penny. As much as would like one, I do not believe that the Schmidt/Bender(drool) is worth $500.00-700.00 more than the swaro. Buy the best and you only cry once. Good luck

Remember fellas, it ain't ALL about the glass. Durability, reliability and repeatability are three 'abilities' that come to mind when justifying a scope purchase...

Picture this:
You finally get your 'shot of a lifetime' at a game animal, but you miss! Your scope pooped the bed 'cause you 'musta bumped in on the way out of the truck'...

Well, I consider every shot at a game animal a shot of a lifetime! A memory forever etched into my mental hunting library. So I'd rather miss on my own accord, than blame it on sub-par gear failing me at crunch time...

I routinely spin my turrets around & round, then back to zero to prove that point to my buddies. Then I tell them to try that with their '__________'. Always find it funny how none of them want to??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just something else to think about...

Never heard much about them. Never laid eyes on one. Some of the various optics forums would be the place to look for opinions. Just be careful of who you listen to.

Tactical optics are easy, Leupold, Trijicon, S&B, IOR, Nightforce. The rest are posers......
