Which 17hmr to go with?

Hey all Im thinking bout ditching my Bmag target 17wsm and getting another 17hmr. Right now ive got a marlin xt17vr that I like really well but am thinking about trying a ruger american.

Does anyone have experience with the RAR predator and target models as far as accuracy? I prefer the price and synthetic of the the predators but wish it had a full bull barrel. In the spring the gophers (richardson ground squireel) get thick enough that you dont want to touch the barrel on my bull barrel marlin. Im curious how good the rar accuracy is once its hot. Most shots are inside 100 yds

Specifically looking at ruger model

If you have an AR15 and you like the AR15 platform, take a look at the 17 HMR complete upper kit from garrowdev.com

In a bolt gun, the CZ 455 Varmint is always a good choice. I'm no particular fan of Savage but my 93 17HMR shoots pretty well.

I had 17hmr in the Remington 597 semi auto. I had more fun with that very accurate, dependable, ergonomic gun than I can tell ya!

Then the powers at be determined it was unsafe. )-:

I still shoot mine. It's an absolute tack driver and the funnest gun I own. Just last night a huge male possum was harassing my cats so I ventilated him DRT. I'd wager he went 15 pounds, big big varmint.

I've shot the gun since they came out and it's always been perfectly reliable. I hear the Savage A17 is junk? Is this true?

the part about the a17 that i hate is the stock. ugh awful design. i switched mine out for a boyds thumbhole.

mine cycles awesome even with "old" ammo, and i've only run one brick of the new a17 stuff thru it (i have a bunch i bought years back when i found a good lot). It shoots on par with my 93r17, which means its still ammo finicky, but with a good lot it'll get into moa territory.

chipmunks at 50 yds are doable, but i havent stretched it out on small critters to 100 yet.

64kodiak: for your sake, please keep that chamber clean on your 597. too much carbon buildup in the neck is where problems can show up. better safe than sorry.

I too have a 597 and it has always been a great shooter, and one of the funnest rifles I shoot. The trigger is a bit stiff, but I can still hold 1/2- 3/4 moa at 100 yards for 8 shots.

I keep it clean enough, apparently. Never have any issues with it.

Good to hear your A7 is functional, I'm still thinking about picking one up. 17 hmr in a semi-auto is a blast to shoot, and a great rimfire for troublesome varmints.

For a bolt I would personally wait for the new tikka. Alternatively, I have a 455 varmint 17hmr I am fond of. It shoots moa right out the box.

I am seriously thinking about trying an A17 just cuz I think it would be fun for jackrabbits, but I am skeptical.

17hmr accuracy is highly dependent on the ammo and even the lot number of the ammo. If you find an accurate lot of ammo, try to buy all you can of that lot number.

I really like the idea of the A17 and know a few folks that have good success with them. I just know personally its too easy to burn ammo on bad shots knowing the next round is right there. Bolt action forces me to behave more (also hate the savage rotary mags)

My first 10 shots with a17 broke the back wall out of the receiver, sent it back to savage and got repaired. Reliable ever since and is a great shooter.

I honestly can't say I've ever shot a .17hmr that wasn't accurate. So it's a toss up. If you're a Ruger fan I say go for it.
