Which howler do you use and why?

I have i think 8 howlers made buy Tony Tebbe . And like each and everyone of them . I will use different ones at different times of the year. Say when it is Late summer or early fall when there is a lot of younger dogs around i will use one that is higher pitch. That is not as aggressive . During mating season i will switch things up from a deeper domainet male to a female that wants some attention. Then on windy days you need one that will reach out there and get them.On calmer days you need a softer one. There is some good production calls out on the market. But a howler made by these custom call makers on this board have that special touch that makes them more friendly to use. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I've been practicing with the Hot Dog and like the sound. Where can I find a "Red Desert Howler"?

The primos hot dog is a copy of the red desert howler. I have both and they sound and function identical. No difference at all.

My fave is a cow horn howler made by myself But I do use others The ones I carry are rdh by dan thompson, killer call by rich cronk, haydels mini pup

Kee's custom band howler. For those on a budget the E.L.K. Power Howler, it doesn't sound as nice as Kee's but both are easy for me to blow.

Cabelas sells them or you can get a hold of Dan himself in Rawlins. I believe his phone is 307-328-4079.

I use a howler made by Sly from SlyDog calls... it is a buffalo horn mini howler, and one of my own cow horn howlers... Its not any better than any of the other quality custom calls ... but to me its just because I made it myself... I just started one that will replace it since i can get the same tone out of it, but is better looking (it has flames carved into it) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif that WILL help!!

another vote for the Dan Thompson Red Desert, I also use the lil dog for pup howls and the white reed for distress. You can also get them from allpredatorcalls.com

I've got an old Herbs Howler (had it about 15 yrs) cowhorn howler and can make fair sounds with it. Question: how does it compare for ease of use and effectiveness with the good custom howlers out there now?

Pat

I've tried a few and the only ones I use on a regular basis are custom howlers from the guys on here or a howler made by a local guy. The commercial howlers I've tried are the E.L.K., Red Desert, Sceery, Crittercall, Songdog, and Primos Hotdog. The custom calls are the way to go, besides, you can get most if not all of the custom call makers on the phone for some 1 on 1 instruction.

*Oh, if you are stuck on getting a commercial howler, the E.L.K. Power Howler sounds the most realistic, but lacks volume. The Red Desert, Sceery and CritterCall Magnum sound good and are loud. That said, The E.L.K. is plenty loud enough except in very high winds. Also, you'll all end up with one or more custom howlers sooner or later.

I use a few... Arkyyoter's Super Demon (great male howls), Arky's Fuzzy Bunny (pup howls) and Predator Nation's Dawg Duster (great female howls) and Dirty Dawg (great high pitch howls) all are great calls! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have stood in Dan Thompson's workshop while he measured all the parts on a Hotdog Howler with a caliper; they are identical. You can interchange the parts. They do not sound the same. Primos copied the call Dan has spent his whole life perfecting. I make my own fly fishing products and know what it's like to have an idea stolen. The Hotdog Howler will call coyotes, but I respect Dan's position too much to own one.

I understand your frustration... I am from Wyoming.... Randy did a bad, bad thing.... $$$$ got the better of him..

To small of an arena to burn bridges.... Dan and Wanda are great people.....

But, a coyote caller is like a fisherman... sometimes you have to throw a different lure out there. I called in my first coyote with Randy's little dog. But, I don't own the Hot Dog !!
