Quote: Seeing that I have never shot at any live targets more than 3 shots, I see no real purpose in shooting 25 rounds for a group, that's just me though.
I want my guns to put the first one from a cold rifle where I want it to go. Maybe the first three. If it shots MOA +/- then I am all set for what I do.
Why not 100 or 1000? Cause 25 is adequate!
With all due respect guys, nobody said to shoot the 25 group non stop or until your barrel burned the bags! Shoot three at a time and let it cool.
It's not about how many shots you take at live targets or where the first one or three go from your cool barrel. My suggestion was purely to determine the true accuracy potential of your rifle. Three shot groups will not tell you. Even averaging a series of four or five three shot groups won't tell you much. Laying the four or five three shot group targets over each other will tell you something though.
I personally use four five shot groups averaged to get an idea of the accuracy of a load or a gun. Even that is not adequate but it is a good indicator. OTOH, my four groups may average exactly 1 moa, but unless everyy group was exactily 1 moa then it's a given that the rifle will not place all shots within 1 moa. Somewhere in that four group scenario was a group larger than 1 moa. Maybe it's 1.25 or 1.5 and that that makes it a 1.25 or 1.5 moa gun/load/shooter. It's only as accurate as the largest group it has ever shot under ideal conditions.
When you shoot a single 25 shot group it will show you the possible outcome of any singular first shot you may take at a live target. IOW, if your rifle shoots a 3" 25 shot group, then you know that when you take a shot at a live target your true possible outcome in terms of shot placement is three moa. You don't know what that given shot's poi will be. You do however know the range of possibility.
If you conclude what the accuracy potential of your gun/load is with a single three shot group, you are just stroking yourself. The "three shot group" is practially institutionalized by the gun rags. It's purely to sell the advertiser's products.
