Why do you coyote hunt?

There are alot of reasons why i hunt coyotes. Before I learned about it, all I had was a savage .22 rifle and a Rem 870 wingmaster 12 gauge and didnt know anything about big rifles or handguns but i finally was working full time and had the means to do something about it. It all started 2 years ago when a few friends and i were out at our local gun range and I grabbed the newest hunting regulations magazine and started reading about this open season where you could use a high powered rifle or shotgun (we cant hunt anything with a centerfire rifle in IL) to hunt them night or day all year long. This sounded very interesting to say the least. As I started researching everything popular rifles, camo , and other things needed to do this coyote hunting. I thought it would be easy. Then i talked to everyone i knew and didnt like what i heard. Everyone told me it was impossible it just couldnt be done. Well that lit a fire under my butt that is still burning. I bought all of randy andersons dvds that were available at the time and things started cliking then i found this site and the rest is history. Allthough im still new at all this heres why i hunt predators. 1 Its more of a challenge than i ever would have imagined 2 Its very rewarding knowing that i called in one of the smartest animals out there 3 I was told it cant be done 4 I can do it all year long 5 I can use a rifle and last but not least 6 I just love being outdoors. Even the days that dont produce are good days for me. Im just starting out and its been great. I cant wait to see how this season will go. Good luck everyone !!! Sorry this is so long.

I coyote hunt because I love it PERIOD.

In todays world many feel the need to justify to others why they do what they do....regardless of what it is....The older I get I have less need or desire to justify to anyone why I do what I do.

I hear guys say all the time they hunt for the fur, or to save bamby, or a number of other reasons....well that may be but I'm betting that if they were honest with themselve they simply hunt coyotes because they enjoy it PERIOD.

I see it sometimes where the fur guys try and scold the just hunt for fun guys and I just laugh to my self. Bottom line is we ALL hunt coyotes for our own selfish reasons, whether it be for fur, fun, challenge, damage control or any number of other reasons. I suggest that if you enjoy hunting coyotes for any of these reasons don't worry so much about offending anyone or justifying the why to anyone but yourself

After thought....this is in no way ment to trivialize the fur trade or those that enjoy partaking in it. I actually think it is great that you do. The fur here is not that good and I don't hunt coyotes for fur no more than I hunt deer for meat. I simply do it because I love to hunt. I like deer meat and don't waste a bit but I'm not spending much time skinning a 4 dollar coyote. In fact I doubt I would spend much time skinning a 20 dollar coyote. With that said I spend plenty of my time hunting them every chance I get and feel no need to justify it or apologize for it.

Now lets go call some coyotes and have some fun.

Good Hunting, and God Bless,

Byron

I also agree with TA17's post. No justification needed.
I hunt because it's fun, and because they are a nuisance where I live in SE-MO. We got way too many and I try to do all I can to keep numbers in check, but I'm not doing such a good job at the moment.
No matter how many I get, I hear 3 and 4 packs howling sometimes after dark. Here in Missouri we can hunt them at night, but cannot use artificial light.

Find the logic behind that law???? At any rate, they are smart here and reluctant to come to calls. I put out bait stations and manage to do ok with that tactic. I do hunt some during the full moon, but probably don't see as many as I call in due to the fact that I can't use a spotlight. Ultimately I do it cause I get a charge out of when one comes in, especially to your call. That just tells you that you did everything right! I do trap and sell fur, but right now coyotes hides ain't even worth skinning. Doesn't stop me from hunting them though! I gotta git back out to the blind!

Why do I coyote hunt?

Because it's illegal to shoot humans.

Seriously, I like the challenge. I usually skin and tan the hide and dispose of the carcass in the garbage.

I've heard of people making jerky out of the back straps of coyote but I'm not that brave.

Sorry if I'm repeating the comments of others. Seven pages is a lot to read through

Since then, yrs rolled on by. One day out taking a walk with my wife along a timbered trail. I looked down & found a wooly catapillar. I remarked to my wife, about the wide bands. Hmmm, a long winter a coming?

Well I took this wooly & stuck him in my shirt pocket. I talked to him frequently. One day he answered me back. He said he wanted to hunt coyote. Huh, say what? says I.

Well, I started to take wooly with me hunting coyote. I taught him to load my AR mags. He got very good at that

Well, whudya know. One day ole wooly turned into an animal lover. Et messed up many of my shots on coyotes, that were a gimme.

Well then, I kicked ole wooly out of the house. Now days, I hear a faint scratching on the front door. I just know it's him, wanting to be my hunting partner again.

Nope, not gonna happen. wooly bad, like a bad monkey.

edit; Almost forgot. I kill coyotes, because I respect them.

Uhh...peyote anyone?

TA17,

I do justify it to myself and, I just feel no compulsion to justify it to you are any other person. I simply justify what I do because "I" enjoy it. Is this so hard to understand?

And by the way, there are plenty of people that feel the way I do. If you don't like what I said and feel the need to justify the reasons you hunt coyotes by saying you do it for any other reason than enjoyment then you are kidding yourself, not me.

Go have some fun and get off the internet for a while. Might do you some good. Just saying.

Thanks, but none are from Castaic. In fact, I've never been there. I want to fish Castaic's Lower Lagoon BAD! MONSTERS in there! Those fish in my pics are from Lake Jennings, Lake Murray, Lake Poway, and Diamond Valley.

Nice pic by the way! I have a lake in the mountains with that kind of background.

I know this isn't a fishing site, but since I'm new; I thought I'd share a little about me. Easiest way was to just throw some fish pics up:)! LOL

Dad went out today and bought some new camo. LOL It's getting that time!

Thanks for all the replies; it's a good welcome.

By nature I like a challenge. In my opinion coyote hunting is very challenging. I like it that the coyote is so mistrusting. They are cautious by nature and they have great sences. They don't make it easy, so I like it. They are way more fun than paper targets.

I like the fact that old timers that say they have been hunting coyotes all their life say "I am still learning".

Very well put Chad! I agree totally! You and I had a lot of success and fun White tail huntin together through the years but I agree with you. Coyote huntin is where it's at. Were gonna have alot more success and fun with the yotes!!

I started hunting coyotes because one took half my wife's turkey crop, she walked around the barn and found 8 dead toms and a coyote with one in his mouth.
The more I learned about coyotes and the more I hunted them the more I noticed the similarities to flyfishing, learn your quary's habits, what they eat, where they hang out, when they're active, and then present the idea of a meal in the correct manner and hope for a lunker.
I use to spend every free minute chasing Rainbow and Brown trout through the Alberta foothills-I'm a little far from good fishing now and coyotes are a great way to scratch the itch. And I can hunt them all year long.

TA17...sir, I must admit that I do not understand what you meant by stating the above comment. Can you enlighten me?
BTW, I am a member of NPHA as well as a member here.
I'm trying to understand whether or not you are "bad-mouthing" Byron; the NPHA; or both...again, I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me as to your meaning.

Now, to answer the original posted question:
I readily admit that I hunt coyotes...because it is "in my blood". I have done it so long that it has become a part of me, a part of my personality.
I come by it naturally, IMO, by being the 3rd generation of coyote hunters in my family. Although I didn't start going hunting with Dad until age 8, I was around coyote hunters & coyote hunting from the time I was conceived in the womb!
My 1st "pets" were a group of greyhound dogs Dad used for catching coyotes.
So, as I said, regardless of the method used, hunting coyotes is as much a part of my life as breathing or eating.
One winter, back in the late '80s, the then-Mrs. tried to force me to quit hunting. I gave in for exactly 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, I was so stressed she decided she'd rather have me going hunting than sitting at home driving both of us crazy!

I like the challenge of it. Calling, setting the wind up just right; it excites me more than any other hunting. More than sitting in a stand and waiting for a whitetail to mosey on by. That and I don't have to field dress it!
