Why you chose an AR rifle???

I never served in the Military but always thought having an "ARMY MAN GUN" might be kind of fun.Untill middle age and a skill capable of earning a decent living I could never see (afford) spending the money on one. The place where I work now I have a few co-workers who have the "addiction" and at first I thought dang man how many of those could a guy need? A few of those friends were into calling, something I had never tried but it sounded interesting/fun. After my friend called and shot a Bobcat I had to give it a try. My first time out, armed with my Marlin Mod.60 22lr all by myself, I called a coyote in...in caught me off guard really because I was so unsure of myself. I actually didnt spot the coyote untill I got up to leave and had to take a shot at him on the run.No kill that day but still excited about it! Told my good friend about my experience and he advised me to upgrade my calling rifle and sugested an AR. I bought my first one about a week later. Then took up reloading.Then bought another.Then bought another....That was two and a half years ago.1)DPMS Panther Bull 20" w/ JP trigger 2)R-25 .243 Winchester 3)DPMS AP4 .308
 
I never was a fan of the ARs for a calling rifle, until I used a Rock River during the filming of someone else's video (their rifle sponsor). After making a double on a bobcat and grey fox, 2 seconds apart, I was sold.

That was a few years ago and I've owned 2 now. The quick followup shots, double taps, etc... is why I use one. I've killed quite a few coyotes on the 2nd shot, and sometimes on the 5th or 6th shot, when it's a calling contest and fur is money.

Always been a bolt man and bought one last X-Mass, the price was to cheap to pass. I got a DPMS Sportical, nothing fancy but I'm hooked. It won't be my last one.
 
I was toting one in the military also and didn't care for them. Was never even a hunter until about two years ago and for most of that time felt AR was over priced and only for the bunker dwelling types. I used shotgun mostly and really had my sites on a Remington VTR. Then my thoughts changed and I was leaning toward a mini 14 for a more pelt friendly affordable rifle. Turned out that the AR beat the others out in in price. Do not question the awesomeness of the AR. They're not like the military ones I was toting. And you can stick your iPhone or anything else on it.
 
Accuracy and confidence,,,the best way i can sum it up,,I am a better shot with all my ARS becuase now i shoot them more than my bolts.

Confidence in knowing i can handle about any situation that may arise while im out calling,,i.e doubles,triples,pack of rabid blood thirsty dobermans,,well, you get the point.

I really would find it hard to believe any real disadvantage of using a AR to coyote hunt,,I believe they are the future of at least coyote hunting................X
 
I would like to comment in here if no one minds, my opinion of the AR style rifles

Mostly, they may make people who dislike guns uncomfortable so I think that they should be forcibly taken from everyone who owns one and given to me.

This is my opinion because I've wanted an AR for years now mostly for the common reasons listed here and don't have one and have as of yet never seen someone requesting trades for anything I own except my vehicle. And, seeing as I'm a broke college student I can't really afford one for the next couple of years. Oh, also I've always wanted to be the guy that had all the cool toys so if you all had to give me your cool toys then I would be the only one with them. Yeah, I'm a little envious of your Black Rifles.

Well, that was just a little humor between sprints to the restroom while I was sick all night. I hope no one reads the first sentence and goes nuts, but if they do the joke is on them I guess.

And, if anyone is looking for someone to give an AR to I'll be glad to send the address of my local FFL holder and pay for shipping post haste!
 
Jeepdude,,,,,While I can't afford to give one of mine away,,, I'll be happy to bring along an extra one for the PM Hunt in Feb so you can play with it...Who knows, you might win one at the Hunt or Egg Shoot...if any are up for prizes...
 
I'm a college student too and managed to buy one on paltry GI bill money. Sell your old texts and old rilfles (won't need those anyway) and start with a lower. It can be done.

Same here. I had wanted on back as far as I can remember because I wanted a replica of what the military used, just to have it, but couldn't afford to be that impractical.
After I finally bought that first one though I went downhill quickly as I discovered how flexible the platform is, and how it could be used and used well for a lot of purposes.
I really like them because they are a very simple and easy to maintain system for an autoloader. and they are one of the few guns nearly anyone can build, and customize to their own needs.
The variety of parts seems to keep growing and growing. I think I have them in 4 different calibers now with barrels ranging from 7.5 to 24 inches.. and everytime I think I am done, I start building another one.
 
Well I been shooting a Colt M4 for lots of years at work as a Firearms Instructor, Subgun and Assault Rifle Instructor and Operator, I became a Colt Armorer for M4 and AR15 style rifles about 5 years back... It was a very good school... I am quick approaching retirement and needed to be able to fuel the passion so I purchased my first AR style rifle a couple month ago a Bushmaster Predator to keep the Yodle dog population at bay, it shoots awesome, I am currently building my second AR style rifle and have gotten the Plum Crazy lower just a couple days ago and I am currently shopping for an upper... yea it is addicting, especially if ya have one that you can put in Rock and Roll Mode lol lol lol which I am really going to miss

Thanks Old Turtle I'd like to take you up on that offer.

If I had a G.I. bill I'm sure I could afford one, but I am working to pay off tuition without any scholarships or anything at least through my next semester minimum.
 
Got my first one simply because its what my buddies carried in Viet Nam.
Obama convinced me to get a second one. What a salesman !
Then for my third one, I decided to have a custom upper built (Dtech). Hope to have it soon !

It's a great hobby...experimenting with different loads for accuracy, and accurizing the rifle itself. Maybe I'll be good enough someday to compete.
 
All through the 70's I was told how they were inaccurate and a POS. I had to qualify every year with the M16A1 at 200,300, and 500 yards/meters with iron sites, so I knew they were accurate rifles.

I bought a few and I assembled a few. Nice modular design and I don't have to worry about water or the wood warping.
 
I wanted (needed) an accurate semi-auto rifle for hunting coyotes. My mini-14 just wasn't cutting it. So,I started looking at the AR platform rifles.
Then Jim Zumbo spoke up. That made up my mind. I have been happy ever since.

I started my search for the perfect calling rifle in the mid 80s and tried bolt guns lever guns ect ect.... I had a thirty carbine that i really liked but it just wasent a reliable coyote killer so i tried 2 diffrent mini 14s and nither was accurate enough and finally in the late 90s i had enough money to buy an AR and that ended my search for the perfect calling rifle. Now i have 2 a full size and a shorty with a colapseable stock
 
I bought my second AR about a month ago for one reason and that's because last season I was getting ran over at the tips of my feet by coyotes circling my call. I bought a Rock River Varmint and it's as accurate as most people can shoot. It will make a good rifle for coyotes especially on the 2nd shot and so on.

Here in Pennsylvania we cannot use semi auto rifles for any kind of hunting. Not to say I couldn't own one for anything else but I like to use all my weapons for hunting first.
I think I'm going to move. I would love to have one. Right now if I bought one, it would be in the safe and only fired for plinking and self defense. I don't think it would be worth it for just that. ...So go ahead and have your fun and I'll just set here and drool.

Hard to beat a shotgun for those kinda situations.

An AR ain't no better for hitting a running coyote than any other rifle. But yes, an AR will let you miss em a little faster with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th shots than a bolt rifle will though.
