Wisconsin Night Hunting Regulations

Things I think ought to be included as parameters:

1. Minimum of 50 ft. from centerline of road, etc. (state law).

2. Minimum of 200 ft. from vehicle.

3. Hunter must be stationary (advised by LE)

4. Outside of deer gun seasons.

5. Scanning light must be handheld (safety)

6. Can still use gun-mounted light as kill light.

7. Must conform to local shining ordinances if present.

8. Must clearly be engaged in predator calling (calls, camo, etc.)

This is just a quickly-prepared list of what I figure ought to be included or required by the law. Everything we propose will need to be based on safety, reduction of chances for mistakes, and expansion of opportunities for participation. At some point, after we chew on this for a while, we'll need to formulate a resolution that conforms with the Conservation Congress requirments.

Have at 'er folks!

I like it Moose,
Like to see that it encompasses what predator hunting is about, so our DNR doesn't have to worry about poaching etc. of our precious deer. Esp. like #8, it embodies the thoughts, I believe, of what we predator hunters do that seperates us from opportunity hunters.
If we can change the laws to allow us more freedom to allow the use of lights, to better allow us to hunt with less chance of errors for non-target animals I hope they will help us construct rules/laws that benefit us as predator hunters.
Please keep us informed and ask for our help with anything needed.

If somebody could start doing some research and try to find some sort of data on the increase in interest and participation in predator hunting it would be a great help and talking point when we start rolling with this. The info might be right here on Predator Masters!

We can all get our heads together an come up with some statements about influx of wolves, increase in safety even over the current point of kill regulation, etc. Once this starts getting a little more solidified we can strt talking about what counties we can introduce it in, etc. We have enough time to come to a solid consensus on what is in our proposal and if we're all talking the same language it'll be great. I'll pull up some of the language used when the current light law got through and we can build on that.

Even if some of you have not been to the Spring Hearings or introduced a resolution, it's really not that hard of a thing to do. The Congress process can sometimes seem really slow, but it is effective and is a good way to get this done.

Later!

Throw in there the use of infra red (invisible basically) can be used with your nightvision. The moon is not out all time to use or its cloudy.

Looks great Moose!

Hopefully we have enough turnover at the top positions in the state and DNR to actually get something like this passed. I try to get to the spring hearings every year here in Washington county, and it has been my take that deer issues obviously take priority over everything else.

As long as we can word it properly to eliminate any concerns from the deer crowd over this proposal leading to an increase in poaching, I think it may have a chance for the future. I don't have any numbers to back it up, but there has been a definite increase in guys taking up predator hunting in my area.

Some of your parameters would limit a predator caller more than the way the laws are written currently. Unless the point of kill law stays the same and the parameters only apply to shinning. Can't say the current law has ever limited my ability to kill a coyote. When there is at least a couple inches of snow a light isn't even needed.

I would like to see the wdnr do away with the time period we can't use bigger than size bb in a shotgun though.

Yup, WTH, you're right and while I may not have said it, I fully intend to maintain what we already have and build on it. It took a lot of time and effort to get where we are and certainly don't want to step back at all. The success and the fact that as far as I know the point of kill law has not been problematic will bea good foundation. Prior to that law it was technically illegal to use an artificial light while coyote hunting, believe it or not.
