Worst Gun I Ever Owned!!

Ah yes, my Mini 14. I had it set up with a 1.5 X 5 power scope and to fully appreciate the level of accuracy possible with this weapon you really had to shoot it from a bench.

Shooting a ten round group went like this. First round would be to point of aim, second round maybe ½ inch from poa, third round would usually be no more than 2 inches from poa, all additional rounds would fall somewhere in a 4 to 6 inch circle around poa (at least most of the time)

I spent a couple of months trying to figure out what was wrong with the rifle and finally came to the conclusion that it was made to shoot to M.O.F. (minute of field) perhaps for some third world army. I traded it for a used Model 700 in 300 Win Mag.

I was down on semi auto rifles until I shot my first AR, now that's what I thought the Mini would do.

On a side note I owned a Norinco MAK 90 (AK 47) in 223 that would outshoot the Mini 14.

nltrapper do not shoot that h&r pistol anymore. the timing is not right on the cylinder to barrel. probably been shot a bunch and wore out or just a defect. i dont know but it sounds like it is splitting lead as it enters the barrel. the spur that indexes the cylinder or the cylinder itself is not right.

You fellas with the mini problems...
1 in 7 twist is not gonna shoot a 40 to 55 grain bullet very well, most of the time. 69 grain or higher, this is what the stock barrels were designed to shoot.

My Mini 14 wasn't accurate with any weight of bullet. From the Mini 14s I've seen since then I'd say mine was about average. I know you can make them more accurate but for what they cost they should be better than they are. For a few dollars more than a mini you can have a basic AR that will really shoot.

But that's just my .02

To be fair to the Mini, it never claimed to be a target shooter. I have always seen it as a super handy truck gun for dispatching pests in a pinch or as a self-defense weapon. As with many Rugers, it was designed to be very tough and dependable. Accuracy? At fifty yards it will put them in the center mass of your standard human being and go bang every single time. That was its designed use, after all. -Mykal

Prolly one of those Norinco 223 "AK 47" rifles you could buy for $200 back in the 80's. Slamfire city. Hated that rifle.

Stubb

Never had a problem with the Norinco 223 "AK 47", it always went bang, never slam fired for me. My Mini always went bang too but I don't own either one anymore, I wanted something with more accuracy. My AR fits that bill. Always goes bang and is accurate way out past 50 yards.

Thanks for all the input. It certainly is the longest running post I ever done. Good luck with you future firearm purchases.............
