Worthy? coyote dog

podunck,
For the sake of discussion I'll believe in what you remark. Now if you believe your dog is the best of the best. Lets hear about your dog's abilities. Compared to my short list.

If your dog can't catch a free range coyote by itself
If your dog can't kill a fresh caught coyote by itself[after all a coyote is not that big]
If your dog won't come to you when called[no shock collar]
If your dog won't run a cold track
If your dog can't clear a fence or is incapable of finding a way through, around or under
If your dog can't run/lope farther than a mile[insert fresh hound here]
If your dog won't get along with another dog
If your dog won't sound off on a cold track
If your dog quits fighting a fresh caught[non-shot]coyote
If your dog won't go into cover to pull a coyote out[face to face]
If your dog has less stamina/endurance than a coyote
If your dog won't fight a coyote head-on face-face or is a [butt biter]
If your dog can't get into your vehicle/box[without being lifted]
If your dog won't or is reluctant to cross deep water or other obstruction such as a deep ravine
If your dog has "ever" lost/loses a track

Does your best dog come close to matching or even supercede my list?

IMO the best of the best. Would meet all canine hunting dog abilites. If not, then they are flawed. After all the list I made above. Each & every line. A domestic dog is capable of doing. But not all dogs.

I have personally never seen or heard of any dog[including the hounds I ever seen hunt]. That even meets my list. Good dogs regardless, but their ablities are limited.

I carry a satchel into the woods with me containing at least a pound of bllod stop powder and a couple staple guns. Even small hogs can lay the spanking on some dogs. Ive only hhad a few killed but I also took some vet tech classes and can patch one up pretty good.

Ive been searching for the perfect dog but this is as close as Ive gotten

Kirby,
I'm really new to the world of hunting dogs etc, but you need to be clear about what your stateing or asking about. I think everyone who has read this post are just scratching their heads. Are you just saying give a dog a chance? I couldnt agree with you more. They need a chance to be what you want from them. Some fail from birth with physical traits that one doesnt want. Others are given time in the field before one desides if the pup makes the cut. IF for some reason your saying that folks should be keeping dogs or pups that they dont see the potential in, your going to have a rough time convencing those people otherwise. As stated, no dogs are perfect, but why feed a dope or unwanted dog?
DaFUnk
I hope this is inline with what your talking about, your post seems disjointed and is hard to follow

i've about decided kirby doesnt want people to cull dogs so they might breed better dogs, or kirby just dont like the idea of a dog being culled, either way kirby you are just looking for a fight, you dont make much sense in what your saying, so somebody else can argue with you if they want

Here is my answers to your questions.
1. No I would be mad if he did.
2. I don't know. I would be mad if it did
3. It will but I use the tone button when it is not within callin distance
4.This one I can agree with you. And they do
5. They run more than a mile everyday and they don't get a fresh dog turned in. Ever
6. Another one I will agree with and they do
7. Pretty much they are silent and that is the way I want it
8. They quit when I tell them to
9. They are in cover all the time and they pull em to me
10. This is a must because they have to out run the coyote when the coyote is chasin the dog.
11. I want him to bite whatever it takes to get him to engage the coyote and bring it back. And if that means the butt while it is running away then it is a very good dog to me.
12. Not really a issue with me. But they do. This is something that has nothing to do with the dogs hunting abillity.
13. I agree if a coyote will cross it then I feel the dog should too.
14. I would like to say it has never lost a track, but I would be lieing. Has yours?
You are not talking apples and apples. You are talking apples and turnips.lol

I still might shoot mine. I am thinking I might be missing something here.lol
Guys that run coyotes verses decoying them in, have a hard time understanding the concept.
I run hounds too(not on coyotes) and I do understand what he is trying to say here, but he doesn't understand there is more than one way to skin a coyote.
A sight hound or a trail hound is bred and born with the instincts to chase or trail the game of choise.
We are asking a decoy dog to do something that is a learned trait more than a bred in trait. It is not natural for a dog to engage a game animal and then quit it on the boss' comand and then reengage it on the boss' comand. And do this until the boss can get it killed. It is a very skilled dog that can do this and it take alot of brains.IMO
It sure is fun to see a good hound run a track but it is much more impressive to see the cat and mouse game of a good decoy dog. I have see others that have them, and it is pretty cool.
Someday I hope I will get to hunt with you and ole Zipper.

hey devin 69, im saying lay off the red meat for a while,

ya want to know what else im saying, leave the man alone, if he is misunderstood then inform him without redicule. know what im sayin!

Here is what I'm saying. I'll type slow so the questioner's can follow along.

1st off, most use the word "cull" Well quit with the PC crap & spit it out. Fact is you "kill" YOUR dogs. That don't happen to rise to the heights of your expectations? WOW!

I've never seen a dog that was all of that. Et I've hunted with many good coyote dogs. Some less than "top of the breed" BUT good or decent hounds regardless.

One of the guys that hunted with us. Had 3 different dogs that took to attacking livestock, trying to pull them down for a kill. Well, he shot them stone dead, right there. That I understand.

Killing a dog just because it isn't a World champion, best of the best or cream of the crop, whatever. Is BULL CRAP IMO. Give the dog away to someone who wants a pet. Or last resort, take it to the pound/rescue league & give it a "chance" to be adopted.

You guys remark about killing your dogs. Like their some sort of scum of the Earth.

Funny thing is the dogs you keep. Some act like if someone hurt that dog. They'd put the smack down on the offender.
Hmmm, such a fine line.

Frankly to you who kill your dogs. I have nothing more to say. End of sentence.

guess i missed the part about culling if they were not champs, i cull if they are dinks, and yea that means killing them, just like a guy told my one time, why give a dog to some family for a pet that didnt make the cut, you tryed to hunt him and hes no good, so you give him to some family the dog has just enough hunt in him that he starts chasing calves or sheep while they are at work, and yea it happens cause i get to deal with the problem dogs about once every two or three weeks when the sheriff calls me to help him with one

lon0121, no offence but nobody jump on kirby till he told us we were wrong for culling, if somebody dont want to cull thats fine but dont tell me i should be try to raise and hunt the best dogs i can.

Kirby-You remind me of the sports moms that dont want to keep score at the games. "It doesnt matter if you win, as long as you have fun" types. If YOUR dogs suit YOU than thats all that matters. What makes you think anyone else cares what you think? My dogs must meet MY requirements, or they dont stay here. Some get a new home, and some get a bullet, just depends on why they dont suit ME. I have "pets" and I have "hunting dogs", but rarely do I have both in the same package. Funny thing is most "pet" folks cant believe how well my "hunting dogs" are taken care of, and the amount of money and time I spend on them, compared to their beloved porch/pillow warmers.
For every story you can recount about the late starter that turned into a good one, I can double with stories about the the ones that never amounted to anything...
cursing.gif

I wont keep a kid on the team that cant play, I wont keep a horse I cant ride, a gun I cant shoot, or dog I cant hunt, and if you dont like that Im guessin you probably wouldnt like my advice if I was evaluating your dogs...

Take care.

p.s. Just so you know, I will cull for all on YOUR list except #4, 6, 8 and 15 because I dont want MY dogs doing those. #7 Depends on the dog. If its another one of mine than its gone, otherwise I will deter the behaviour, but not cull for it.
