Would you recommend shooting sticks?

Another "never leave home without them" here.
The other thing I wont fit the field without is my turkey vest. It is the callers best friend. As was already mentioned, here in Arizona its pretty hard to find a spot to sit in that won't poke a hole in you. That cushion attached to the vest is just what the doctor ordered for puncture resistance. I also have very little to no rearend, so sitting for more than 5 minutes would be very painful without the cushion also. The vest also has just the right amount of pockets in just the right places, too.

Upgrade to a stool Genesis and you won't be sorry. The stool provides a surprising amount of visibility compared sitting on the ground. I sit, but only rarely, the stool allows one to be motionless for 15 minutes without shifting around or feeling uncomfortable with rocks poking you in the [beeep] that weren't there when you first sat:)
On a stool, it's quite easy to prop your elbows on your knees, and adjust for elevation by simply raising up on balls of your feet or even toes for adjustments in elevation, far easier than shifting aorund sticks, at least for my style, elbows work better than sticks....and they are always there:)

Thats true. I do use a stool alot when I go out. If its just me, I have a hard time carrying all the stuff and a stool is just one more thing for me to haul. But I agree about being elevated a little more, its the way to go.

Thats why you seperate the flyshit from the pepper when it comes to toting stuff:). A rifle,a call and a stool are all the "stuff" a guy really needs:)

Another advantage of shooting sticks or a bipod is that you can have your rifle or shotgun at the ready and it helps eliminate movement. Of course you have to be calling in an area where you have a reasonable expectation of the area the animals are going to come from. I can't hold my gun at the ready for the time it takes to make a stand without sticks.

Here's another vote for the Stoney Point Explorer Tri-pod. Not only for shooting but for getting my old fat [beeep] off the ground at the end of the stand.

I built a set of shooting sticks for shooting off a chair. I used fiberglass fence posts from Tractor supply, total cost $2.50.

I'll be an [beeep]..........shooting sticks are a must!!!!

I carry more gear to every stand than most people do on a 3 day camping trip though. But if I had to forget something at home, it would be the binocs, range finder, and howler all before my shooting sticks.

Something for everyone I guess?, I'd leave everything you mentioned at home. Ive never had a single need for either a binocular or rangefinder. A called coyote is not to hard to see or range when it's standing 40 yards away, but I sure want to be sitting on my stool when it comes pounding in, so I can make a well placed shot, with my elbow propped on my knee:)

I have never used a stool before. But after reading this I might just start. What is a good lightweight brand? Preferrably something that would fold up.

With regard to the shooting sticks. I made my own (actually had a friend in the church make them for me). They are VERY light weight and easy to carry and handy to have around. I also like the idea of my rifle already being in the correct position (most of the time) and not having to move it. I do manage to poke myself with the nails that come out of the bottom of the legs, but that is just because I am clumsy. I probably need to get a booster on my tetnus shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

Most of my shooting is done off of a stool and I just use the camo dove stools with the storage underneath. They are very light. You'll also need your sticks to be at least 48 inchers.

One thing is obvious after reading all the responses in this thread, and that is that the terrain seems to dictate the gear that guys prefer and find as necassary gear. In the wide open plains that I call in most, I feel naked without bino's because I often can spot coyotes while walking into a stand with them. A stool would be a joke for me since the tallest cover is usually soap weed which I already am above it while sitting on the ground/butt pad. My shots are often 100 yards or less, but 200 yards plus too. So for me, shooting sticks are the best all around choice and after using both sticks and bi-pods, I will not ever use bi-pods again. Sticks are very easy to adjust and allow for some swing and in case the situation arrises that I must stand and move to get on a runner, the sticks are dangling under my rifle while shooting off hand.

Just happen to come back from Home Depot, after buying some plants, but while I was there, I spotted these Green Sticks. They're several sizes in heights, like 3ft or 5ft and about 3/8 inch in diameter and made from Fiberglass. Think they are made for tomato stakes, etc. Cost was $2 each, so 2 of them and a big rubber band and you got the makings of some sticks, already painted green. One end is also pointed.

I got some of these @ Kmart and found they were not fiberglass, as I had first thought, but steel tubing, coated w/green plastic with fiberglass plugs @ both ends. Would have sworn they were fiberglass. Found out they were steel when I cut them to length. Not a problem, though, they work great for lightweight sticks. Glad to hear Home Depot still has them, as Kmart doesn't. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I made 2 ea. standing and 2 sitting sets using parachute chord to connect. Used JB weld to hold an 8 penny nail in the bottom of each leg.

Regards,
hm
