Hey, Dave, that's a nasty wound; looks like it was on lower lid but probably blind in that eye? Good thing you all don't have screwworms up there. Amazing how some of those critters survive. Not sure what this whitetail's affliction was, but it didn't seem to hinder him much.
I have always wondered how wildlife in general can navigate, especially in S. Tx. thorn brush without losing an eye. I've watched lots of deer, coyotes, javelina, etc. run headlong into unbelievably thick brush. You would think there would be a whole lot more one-eyed critters running around than there are. This little guy looks like his luck ran out somewhere along the line.

I don't have pictures but I have killed 3 coyotes with one eye, 1 red fox with one eye, 1 woodchuck with one eye, and knew of a one eyed whitetail doe that frequented my yard. A buddy of mine shot an 8 point whitetail buck a few years ago that was dogging a doe hard. It had a wad of grass sticking out of it's right eyeball. We figure it was probably a puncture from battling with another buck. Tough critters for sure!
I've called and killed one, two legged coyote (had opposing front and hind intact). And several three legged coyotes. All came into the call looking plenty spritely. All appeared to be in good health, not missing meals.
The two legged one though, although she came in hot and fast, her gait was definitely weird. Saw her coming from about 800 yards, across a sage brush flat that sat about 30 feet lower than I was sitting. Doing what they do running through sage like that, zigging and zagging, connected by the straight shot through when it was there. But the occasional high leap, to get a quick view ahead from above the brush. Even at nearly a half mile out, I thought something was off about her gait.
I've also called and killed two coyotes that were packing fresh bullet wounds, too.
