NRA Southwest Regional Highpower Rifle Matches were held at the Doña Ana Range, Ft. Bliss Tx. in 1962. Numerous dust devils made for an interesting match, especially the 600 yd. stage. Had several dust devils between firing line and target pits, intermittently obstructing visibility of the targets completely, not to mention making wind doping quite challenging. This picture taken during 200 yd. offhand stage does not do justice.
Fortunately someone from the Ft. Bliss AMU warned me that I'd never complete the match unless I removed all lubricant; first time I ever shot a "dry" M1, but was grateful for the tip, some were not so fortunate.
This little guy was born on a well site and the oilfield workers brought him to the ranch hand's house. Ranch hand's wife bottle fed him until he got big enough to fend for himself so they had to take him to the south pasture because he would not leave the house. Unfortunately, the other oryx would not accept him and killed him not too long after this picture was taken.
Built this 98 Mauser in 6mm Rem. and gave it to my son for Christmas in 1968; he was 8. The 26" barrel was a bit long for the little guy, but figured he'd grow into it . Didn't seem to bother him too much as long as he had a rest, a few weeks later he shot his first coyote with it.
