Hey fellas,

Just curious as to how many PMers here use any of the various 17 centerfires as their "go to" predator rifle?

After watching Varmint Safari IV (over and over again), I am repeatedly awestruck as to how DAA's 17 Predator puts those dogs down hard, and I mean down HARD! It just can't be, can it??? From a teeny weeny little bullet??? I guess speed really does kill...

After goofing around with some #s on EXBAL, that 17Pred is an absolute laser out to 500yds! Heck, my 7WSM can't hang with those ballistics! Do any of the other 17s or wildcat variants perform in like fashion?

I'd love to see what flavor you are all shootin' in the 17cal. and what bullets you've selected to get a coyote down. I know there are some 17 Rem ARs out there too...so let's see whatcha got!!!

2 17AH's that are instant death on fox and woodchucks. I have a 17 Rem LVSF that I am just now getting up and running. I am going to be building a 17 Fireball next I believe. Looking forward to tryning the 17 Rem on a few dogs this winter.
All I can say about the 17's is they are overachievers in the killing department. I still can't get over how a 17AH pushing a 20gr VMax can hit a 15 pound chuck at 250yards and just cause him to fall over DRT. They never move a muscle after being hit, except for the tail death rattle.

I have been shooting .17 caliber centerfires longer than most folks out there. Got my 1st .17 Remmy about 30 years ago. Back then, the .25 grain Hornady HP was the only bullet you could get for it, so that is what I used, natch. Birds would just explode when hit with this bullet. I shot a crow at about 125 yards or so with it once and when I went to go look at the carnage feathers were still coming down.

Every year when I go to Wyoming to shoot praire dogs I take a .17 Rem along. Dogs out to 300 yards dont go anywhere. I have hit closer ones where the little 20 gr Vmax bullet just tore them in half. Most impressive. My longest hit was a lasered 400 yards. Dog showed no signs of a hit at that distance but was DRT. And I do like watching the hit in the scope too.

And a couple of months or so the early ground squirrels will be coming back out. I will be out there with my Izhmash .22 rifle and my .17 Remington. I can hardly wait, as usual.

17AH
17-222AI
17Mach4
17Javelina.

The mach 4 AKA 17Fireball works on foxes like Dave's Predator works on coyotes. Trading a rifle in the next week or so for 17FB for my son. Having another 17javelina built in a month. Kicking around a 17-223 on an AR. I dig 20cals also.

I've never shot a coyote with one but have crows and groundhogs a lot. I love the caliber, I used Berger bullets and was almost amazed at how that little bullet can do so much damage!! Also, like how you see it hits and then hear it!! And lastly it is also extremely accurate!!

I shoot the little 17 Ackley Hornet for fox, 25 gr Bergers at around 3000fps. Entertaining the thought of trying the 20gr V-Max next. It is built on the Browning Micro Hunter A Bolt action. We had Bob Green of York PA build two of them.

The other 17 caliber that I currently own is the new Remington Model Seven Predator in 17 Fireball.

My go to gun is a Remington LVSF .17rem that is the third .17cal I have owned. I am thinking about having a custom built gun in a .17 wildcat built or maybe a .20 Tac.

I really like 17 caliber rifles ! I shoot :

17 Mach II
(2) 17 HMR's
17 Ackley Hornet
(2) 17 Mach IV's
17 Fireball and
(3) 17 Remingtons

There are quite a few good bullets out there now for the 17's . Hornady , Kindler , Berger , Nagle , and probably others too .

I think that my next project rifle will be a 17 Predator . DAA has really impressed me with this one .

That there is some nice rifles Wildcat. I have never heard of a 17 nasty. Is it based on a ppc, or BR case. Not to offend you but that bottom McMillen stock is one of the uglist stocks I have ever seen. I have seen hundreds of them. But I like the green one on top had on in the same pattern.

I designed the 17 Little Nasty which is a PPC case (220 Russian) necked down to 17 caliber and shortened -.180" .

Roughly 21.5 grs on powder over 4000+ fps as accuracy is acceptable /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The 16 lb groundhog was shot at 346 yds in the throat patch as he was standing up in a field. He died instantly - stone dead.

The McM stock is done in woodland camo or some call it "smear". Similar pattern used by many of the Vietnam sniper rifles back in the day

I have the same stock in desert camo. With the same big blobs. I painted blue to cover it up. I'm well versed in the ppc. I shoot a 6ppc, and a 22 100 short in regersted br matches. Is that black stock on the Grizzly a Kelby stock, or a McMillin? To get back to the subject I shoot a 17 mach 4, and a 17 rem.

Hey, Wildcat Cartridge Fan:

I didn't know you were a wildcat cartridge fan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

You ever thought about posting over on Saubier where a lot of 17 caliber wildcat cartridge fans hang out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

You Cajuns sure have some nice swimming pools...

Man... Between those Browning AH's of Sonny's that always make me start reaching for my wallet, and Blake's sweet rigs, I better not read this thread anymore. It'll end up costing me some serious cash!

Oh, guess I better post a couple pics of my two favorite .17's, my .17 Mach IV (walnut) and my .17 Predator (McMillan).
