17 caliber shooters, sound off!

Here is my "used to be light" LSVF .17rem that is much better than before. I added Boyd's thumbhole, Warne rings and bases and a Bushnell Elite 2.5-16x42 scope. Points alot better now with the added weight and the thumbhole stock.

I have a 17 predator reamer with a .199 no turn neck I might be persuaded to lend it to the right gunsmith. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey ncyotecaller, how do you like that Bushnell? I was looking at putting that exact scope on my 17 Rem but I have heard mixed reviews.

I better not read this thread anymore. It'll end up costing me some serious cash!

Dave, Your article about your 17Pred does the same thing to me....
This is my first year with the 17 and Im hooked. Here's mine: Remington 700 with RifleBasix trigger in 17Remington. It shoots the 30gr Bergers well.

That's a good looking rifle!.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I love the Elite 6500's, I have 2 of them and couldn't be happier with them. I use the one on my .17 on my Savage 10ML-II and switch them back and fourth. I had an Elite 4200 3-9x40 on it but after getting my first 6500 I had to have another one.

And who would be the right gunsmith? I know a couple of people in the Salt lake area that are fine smiths.

As long as they dont trash the reamer I would let you use it I cut my chamber and probably wont ever do another but you never know.

I came back on here this morning just kind of peeking through one eye to see if this thread had died down.....it didn't. Now there's even more nice rifles posted. I'd really like to build one....but....I might just pick up a factory 17Rem and run with it for a bit and go from there. If I decide to build after that I'll likely have a little better idea of exactly what I want.

Did I mention that you guys are causing my wallet to get a little scared again. LOL.

( But I guess you already knew that)

Dug the AR15 17-204 out of the safe and put a scope on it this week. Loaded some 30 golds up and shot tiny little groups , now going to try it out on some coyotes after reading all of the post has got me all fired up to go coyote hunting with my 17's again. I have all kinds of 30 grain bullets to try . I will keep yall postede how thing come out. Later! Alan

Alan D,
Now why did you go & say that you had a 17-204 in an AR?
I'm developing a "twitch" over here...
Need build details & pic, please!

Brad,
I sold my wallet to fund rifle builds & optics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Currently using a double wrapped rubber band that ain't holdin' much besides ID... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ok ! I will try and get you some pics . I am planning on going out tonight and see what I can call up . I will post some pics if I get something . The rifle is one I built last year and never got to try out on coyotes . I will give rifle details with pics also . Later! Alan

DAA,

You sent the .17P dummy rounds straight to DTech at my request. If I forgot to thank you for doing this, I apologize.

Mike (DTech) was impressed with the looks of the cartridge, especially the sharp, crisp shoulders, and he told me he could see no reason that the cartridge wouldn't function in an AR. He also said he should have no problems getting a chamber reamer, as you and he have the same reamer supplier.

I haven't ordered a .17P from DTech (yet), because I currently have an unfired .223 WSSM upper and a complete .20 Tactical AR rifle that he just built for me. As soon as I recover financially from these purchases, and from a family vacation to South Dakota (can you say "coyote hunting trip"?) that begins this Saturday, I'll remedy that shortage. Mike has more than plenty work to finish, so I don't know if I can stand another long wait for one of his fabulous AR's.

Again, thanks for sending the dummy rounds.

John

No sweat John, you're more than welcome. And I'm glad to hear that Mike at Dtech thinks it should work fine. Interesting timing on me reading this, too. I've never actually even talked to Dtech, but I hear lots of good things. My BIL just called me to ask where he should get a custom AR made, and I told him that if I were looking to get one made, I'd probably call Dtech - so the BIL is going to.

Fred, I'm not very savvy on AR's in general, but I can't see any reason in the world why fireforming would present any challenge at all. Should go just slicker 'n snot, I would think.

The .17-204 isn't a bad idea either.

Holey moley! Interested to hear if those long 30gr Golds would pose any mag feeding issues or not...

I kinda like my hunting rigs compact & light...hence the Model 7 fetish and lightweight ARs. A 24" barreled AR in 17PRED would sure be something, but may not be my first choice for a calling rig. Especially with a 6.5 lb bolt gun build in the works already. It'd be hard to top that in an AR config...

Need to speak with the Wizard from Bemidji tomorrow AM, if he hasn't froze solid up there yet...

Ya gotta have dreams, right???

Another question for the 17 reloaders. Is neck turning mandatory for these little devils, or dependant on the chamber's specified dimensions?

Two words for the 17-204 and 30 golds ! BANG FLOP ! Just got one coyote last night , calling was kinda slow and no takers. Finally got one coyote that just popped up out of nowhere as I was leaving , had to shoot out the window while holding the light and trying to focus on a moving target is not easy. I have a calling chair in the back of the pickup that I use for calling but I had already got back in the truck and was leaving the field that I called the first stand in . I gave each stand plenty of time but it was just a slow night . The 17-204 feeds really good out of the AR even with the longer 30 golds . I think it would be the same with the 17 Predator also . Later! Alan
