17 HMR on coyotes

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find it. Any one had good or bad luck with the 17 with factory loads? I thought it would be a great way to extend my normal shotgun range without tearing hides up. Not to mention their price.

With a REAL good shooting rifle and good scope within 100yds with something of the 20gr variety and a perfectly placed head shot....it can be done. But you may have to pass on alot of shots. Can you use centerfire?

A perfectly placed head shot would require hitting something the size of an egg. Fox and Coons is about as big as you need to go with the Hummer.

I have killed one with the 17hmr. Took 3 hits to stop him and a fourth to kill him. I had to try it. Now that I have done it, I will not do it again. Lee

I have shot one with the 20gr CCI gamepoints. Straight on center chest shot at 68 yards. This dropped her. She got up and managed to go 40 yards before dropping again. One more shot to end her, although not needed. Neither shot exited.

I would say it is enough to kill coyotes with. If you have enough self control to only take a standing shot that gives a good path to the vitals. Not always practical. Animals aren't always predictable.

I am upgading to a .17 centerfire for the coming season. A little more knockdown without sacrificing fur friendliness. Reloading ends up being as cheap as buying 17HMR.

Rent (or better yet, buy) 10 coyote hunting videos, and tell us how many 17 HMRs you see them using. Keep in mind, these are the guys I would consider "the Pro's".
Nothing at all against the 17 HMR. It rocks small critters, but seems barley marginal on coyotes.

If your real skilled ! You can sneek up on them and hit'em in the head with your rifle ! lol

I have shot 1 yote and 3 red fox with mine. I took it out just to see if could be done! I don't carry it for them any more.

Frankly I'd save the 17 hmr for ground squirrels and use something centerfire for coyotes, you'll be able to harvest at longer ranges and the center fires kill really well. If your looking for low pelt damage get a 17 Remington or put up a trap line.

I think the 17 HMR might be the best cartridge there is for coyotes. Stone dead and not a bit of hide damage.

Your killin me BCB if you don't back this up with mentioning the 5mm RF.

I to have killed a coyote with the hummer, with one shot at 90 yards too, but the results weren't what I would want. She ran 50 yards, and it would have been a lost coyote in thick brush.

"I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I could not find it."

A search would have turned up hundreds if not thousands of posts about it.

The SPCA is really coming down on us for beating this same old horse to death over and over.

a 17 HMR for killing coyotes?
i am a perty meen person who loves vilence, but i still wouldent do that to a coyote. dont belive in makeing animals suffer for a long time before they die. but if you are a good shot go for it. i guess a skilled shot could put a 22 lr. bullet through the eye of a rhino and kill it if your a good shot.

I am a 17 HMR advocate and I get so sick and tired of all the speculative bunk that is said whenever this issue comes up. Everyone and thier dog "shot one perfect and it got away" and if that isn't the case they have never even tried it. They simply speculate. Well how about this.....

Who here would shoot a 225 pound whitetail at 200 yards with a .243 and 100 grain bullet?? Probably everyone, that would be considered a slam dunk, not even close to marginal.

Well that setup at that range (based on ballistics from the Hornady ammo website) would be producing 1397 ft lbs. of energy. On a 225 pound deer that is 6.2 pounds of energy for every pound of animal.

Now, who would shoot a 25 pound coyote with a 17 HMR and 20 grain XTP at 100 yards? Most wouldn't. Well guess what? A 17 HMR at 100 yards generates 140 ft lbs. of energy. On a 25 pound coyote that is 5.6 pounds of energy. Very close to the same ratio you would be using on that deer above with your .243. Hmmmmmmmmmmm?

I've killed a bunch of coyotes with a 17 HMR. Is it the perfect/best coyote gun? Nope. Will it work. You bet, just keep the shots close and in the vitals. And don't tell me you hit the vitals until you have recovered the animal and done a bit of an autopsy to see what really happened because when shooting at game a lot of what occurs happens faster than the eye can see. I've recovered a number of "perfectly hit" animals that were actually gut shot or worse.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I'll be adding a 17 and a ?? to the guncase. And thanks for the kick in the teeth about not knowing how to do a search. I opened the search, typed in 17HMR and got nothing.SORRY

Is the 5MM RF that new elephant round everyone's chattering bout....? It's reputed to be so powerful that it would probably shoot right through a coyote and it would be several weeks before even the coyote knew something had happened..

As for gut shooting coyotes... Not a problem for the 17 HMR. Bang-Flop, DRT. Kills like a B-52 arc-light strike.... And no pelt damage... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
