Pic on left is another yote I happened to accidentally call in, ha ha. He was 200 yards away when the 220 swift sent a 40g VLC at 4550fps. He didn't have a chance.

Pic on right was a yote I busted with my current 25-06 which is a winchester. Unbelievablyy accurate. He was shot around 200 yards with the 87g sierra SP at 3400fps.

my two favorite calibers
The swift is really screammmmmmmin out there lets see a 204 get 4500 out of a 40 gr. I am shootin a 42 gr.at 4300 fps and I thought that was fast.... And as you know the countdown is on for my 25-06..... t-4 and counting

Thanks guys. I got bored and decided to post some of my pics. I love seeing pics of kills and figured others might to. I recently got rid of the swift. Kinda wished I hadn't now. It sure was hellacious on those dogs. I used the 40g VLC at 4550fps for a little bit, then I switched to the 55g NBT at 3925fps. The 40g would never exit and I had a couple runners. With the 55g I got 1-2" exits reguardless.

Oh yah forgot to mention about the 204. That cartridge does not even begin to compare with a swift. When I bought the swift, the guy at the counter was tryin to sell me a 204 but I'm not new to reloading or ballistics. I knew what I wanted, and I wanted a SWIFT. The 204 is light years behind the swift.....

yotekiller what brand and model was your swift i think i may get one but i am having a hard time finding in a light weight gun the only one i found was the rugar m77 mll.

Theres really not to many choices with the SWIFT. Mine was the Ruger MK2 Target/Grey Version. It shot excellent with anything I put through it with IMR-4064. It was either that or the Remington VSSF and it was $250 more and it aint guaranteed to shoot any better. I knew the Ruger would shoot good because my dad has the same rifle in a 22-250 and gets 1/4" groups at 100 with it. My swift shot .25-.3" at 100 yards as well. The Ruger really is the way to go if your on a budget.. The 2 stage trigger is actually really nice. It breaks pretty good at 2-2.5#. OHHHH ya, Ruger does make the regualr wood/blued w/24" barrel. Thats going to be your only lightweight rifle in that caliber. I imagine with a trigger job and reloads, should still be capable of some fine accuracy.

How do you figure the .204 ruger is light years behind the Swift.Granted they're different guns for different purposes.But let's just see the light years of difference.

.220 swift 55 grain NBT B.C(.267)

Drop= 0=-1.5,100 yrds=0.7,200 yrds=0.0,300 yrds=-4.4,400 yrds=-13.5,500 yrds=28.7,600 yrds=-52.1

Windage(10mph)= 0=0.0,100 yrds=0.8,200 yrds=3.5,300 yrds=8.2,400 yrds=15.5,500 yrds=25.8,600 yrds=39.7

Velocity= muzzle=3920,100 yrds=3477,200 yrds=3081,300 yrds=2719,400 yrds=2384,500yrds=2074,600 yrds=1789

Energy= muzzle=1871,100 yrds=1476,200 yrds=1159,300 yrds=902,400 yrds=694,500 yrds=525,600 yrds=391

.204 Ruger 40 grain VMax B.C (.275)

Drop= 0= -1.5,100 yrds=0.7,200 yrds=0.0,300 yrds=-4.3,400 yrds=-13.3,500 yrds=-28.2,600 yrds=-50.9

Windage(10 mph)= 0=0.0,100 yrds=0.8,200 yrds=3.4,300 yrds=8.0,400 yrds=14.9,500 yrds=24.8,600 yrds=38.1

Velocity=muzzle=3910,100 yrds=3488,200 yrds=3102,300 yrds=2749,400 yrds=2422,500 yrds=2118,600 yrds=1837

Energy=muzzle=1361,100 yrds=1080,200 yrds=854,300 yrds=671,400 yrds=520,500 yrds=398,600 yrds=299

So I guess I don't see the light years ahead that you speak of.The 204 ruger beats the Swift ballistically in 3 out of the 4 categories,and only has 100 ft lbs less energy at 600 yrds.That with the Swift having a 15 grain heavier bullet.Like I said they're different guns,and different applications.Good Hunting Chad

Utahcaller,

I think you have to compare Apples to Apples. Run the Swift with a 40 gr Vmax and see what you get. In order to get a good and fair test

.220 swift 40 grain Vmax B.C(.200)

Drop= 0=-1.5,100 yrds=0.5,200 yrds=0.0,300 yrds=-4.1,400 yrds=-13.1,500 yrds=-29.3,600 yrds=-55.9

Windage(10 mph)= 0=0.0,100 yrds=1.0,200 yrds=4.3,300 yrds=10.3,400 yrds=19.8,500 yrds=33.7,600 yrds=53.4

Velocity= muzzle=4322,100 yrds=3692,200 yrds=3145,300 yrds=2662,400 yrds=2226,500 yrds=1835,600 yrds=1494

Energy= muzzle=1659,100 yrds=1210,200 yrds=878,300yrds=629,400 yrds=440,500 yrds=299,600 yrds=198

So at 600 yrds with the 40 grain Vmax bullet shot from a .220 swift you have 5 inches more drop,15 inches more bullet drift,343 less fps,and 101 less ft lbs of energy,than the .204 ruger.Apples to Apples? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

kyotekiller25, i have a Ruger MK2 Target/Grey chambered in 25-06 and i love it. i was thinking of buying a 220 swift but i am not really familiar with the cartrige and don't want to spend a fortune on a rifle. What brands of rifles would y'all suggest?

UC- Dang you are right, the 204 really isn't that much different from the swift when using the 204/40g vs. 220/55g. I guess I never really ran them side by side. Well I have, but I didn't remember them being that close. I should have stated this in the beginning, but the 204 is not the fastest cartridge like the gun rags rave about. I wanted the swift for pure speed. I shot the 40g NBT at 4450fps, the 204 with a 32g wont even come close to that. Run the ballistics with teh swift at 40g/ 4450fps, and the 204 32g vmax at 4250. You'll see the swift beats it in every single category, hands down. Thats where I got my info from. For pure flat shooting ability, I stand by my original claim, the 220 swift is still king. All that hype about the 204 shooting flatter then the swift is bogus when you look at it with the smaller bullets.

Why would you only look at the lighter .204 bullets if the heavier and higher BC bullets offer the advantage? It sounds like you are changing the equation to fit your argument.

Velocity suffers pretty quick if you don't have a decent BC as is the case with the 40 grain 220 Swift. Like UtCaller says, they are completely different cartridges but you can't deny the efficency of the .204 with its higher BC 40 grain bullets.

I compared them both this morning with the heavies and the lights. If your wanting the fastest, flattest shooting varmint rifle PERIOD out to 600 or so, go with the SWIFT. That is what I wanted when I was looking to buy. I compared both with the lights before I bought, and you can clearly see the advantage with the swift. However, barreli life is not even half that of a 204, and your burning 15g more powder, not very efficient I admit. At the time I did not care about efficiency, once again, I wanted teh FASTEST and FLATTEST. Now that I look on it though, the 204 is quite efficient with the 40g bullet. I might have to look into one of these 204's.

.220 swift with a 40g NBT (BC of .221) @ 4400fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, drops 27.4 at 500, and 49.8 at 600.

.204 Ruger 32g VMAX BC of .210 at 4250fps. 100y zero. Drops 30.9 at 500, and 56.2 at 600.

Like I said, for the FASTEST and FLATTEST shooting, PERIOD, the swift wins time and time again. There is simply no replacement for displacement.

For efficiency, you bet the 204 wins hands down. That was not my deciding factor, and reguarding all the marketing hype about the 204 being the baddest, fastest, flattest shooting cartridge simply is not true.

204 with 40g vmax at 3910 drops 28.2 at 500 and 52.1 at 600. So as you can see, still falls a couple inches short of the swift, no matter how you look at it.

I've owned my Swift for almost 30-years and I would'nt part with it for anything. That said the .17s and .20s are hot new and capable of more than their light bullets would leave you to believe. I'm currently saving my pennies to build my son a custom 6.5-08 Ackley but you can bet that when it's finished I'll be looking to put a 20-250 AI, 204 Ruger, 20 Tactical or 20 VarTarg in the safe for the days when I'm calling in the Pinon/Juniper (PJ)canyons of southern CO. or on those rare occasions when I make it back to Central PA for woodchucks. What happened to the old debate over the 220 swift vs. the 22-250? now that's a topic to get the blood boiling.
