Annual Groundhog tally for 2011

Way to go Wahoo your taking care of business on your farms this year. Won't be long and you'll have one past the 400yrd mark. I would bet by the end of this summer. Keep up the good work.

wahoowad, you're creeping up on that 300yd mark. It won't be long

. I have a feeling that 243 is going to be the one to do it

.

Wayne - good to see you getting back on the site. I hope you can find time to get out and at them with your new rig. I scored some additional land between us that we could meet up and go after em, although I've been twice and haven't seen many hogs. Maybe things will change when some of the standing corn gets cut for silage.

Corey - you gotta keep up on your reading! I finally splashed my 300+ 'hog a few posts back! Maybe a week or so I guess. Actually got it with the 17FB but I am feeling way more confident with the Savage 243 and clicking in my scope adjustments. I dialed in last nights shot and it hit exactly where I aimed

wahoowad, you're right, I do need to keep up. Work has been hectic lately. Congrats on the 300+, like Wayne said, next it'll be 400yds, then 500yds. The sickness never ends

. I finally got my 500yd kill the other year and have been thinking about 600yds now. There aren't many places around to get those opportunities though. I keep one hog alive and only take the long shots at him when he's out. I could stalk to 50yds and take him, but it is a beautiful, safe shot that can vary from just over 600 to the 650's depending on where I shoot from. I've come close several times missing by a few inches. The more you work out that 243 the more you're going to like dialing them up. I wish I had target turrets on all my varmint worthy rifles.

You guys are putting the smash on them. I spent this last weekend out in NM and TX, sorry no hogs out there. I did find some great coyote country.
Well I got out during 4th of July weekend and had some luck. I did get my furthest shot so far on a ground hog. Just 198 yds but it made me happy.I was heading up to my truck after I had scared one ou of a tree and saw this guy bobbing around on the edge of the bean field. I was trying to get set and hestarted to head back to his hole in the fence line, so I had to rush my shot a bit. High shoulder shot and across the back, but it roled him. First pic is from my shot spot.

This is the new farm I am hog hunting on this year. The one I have been waiting for them to cut the hay on the back field.

And last is the gun pose.I sure am lovin the .204, but can't wait to start building the 6mmBR.

P.S. I did miss a 277 yd shot. I am pretty sure I missed. I didn't find him, so for me it was a miss.

Good work gentlemen! If only there were more!

There a few less from where I went yesterday. I spent the afternoon scouting up some new territory and scored access to a sizable place offering lots of long range opportunities. Now I just need the groundhogs to show up. I did see a few yesterday, connecting on 3 out of 4.

First I had to pay some bills and get a few groundhogs the farmer specifically wanted to go away. They were eating his beans and leaving tell-tale open spots in the field.

This one was dusted at 111 yards with the Savage 243 and won't be eating any more beans.

Here was another bean eater at a different location. I think it was a 175 yard flight for the Vmax.

I picked up a little hunting buddy for awhile. This dog was sitting by a barn watching the bean patch waiting for the groundhog too. I couldn't tell if he was happy or sad when I ruint it.

This one got me excited when I noticed it way, way off in the middle of a field. It was too far for my rangefinder to get a distance so I had to put a stalk on it to get closer. I had limited options but eventually worked my way out to a shooting position in the field. I still could not get a distance to the groundhog so had to estimate using the distance to a nearby clump of grass. I dialed in 300 yards but then could not get a decent shot as it stayed low. It would not stand up when I whistled so finally took the best shot it offered. I had to go look for it as I wasn't sure if I hit it. Finally found it and was able to get a distance lasering back towards some trees subtracting the difference to my shooting location. I was a little long on my estimate and the hog was only at 283 yards. That explains why the shot went a tad high and blew out the backside of it's head.

I noticed these little peep-peeps under a tree and think they are baby bluebirds.

I forgot to post all my 4th of July pics. Here are a couple more. This one was the guy that I scared out of a tree when I was walking down to setup on another hog. He finally came out later and I got um.

He was under 40 yards. Oh well.HE was a little guy and he was on the same entrance road as the hog that I got my semi long shot on. Just looking down the other way.

The next day, Monday the 4th I went back to another farm and got this guy. I saw 3 and only got this one.

He was a little bigger than the other.

And we come to yesterday. I went out after work at 6pm and saw one and had my first run off. I was using new ammo I loaded. I didn't want to take a follow up shot because the farmer was near by and also I couldn't believe he was not DRT. I had grass in my way and that could have been it, but who knows. I count it as a bad shot and not kill. I found a lot of blood and the hole he went in but could not reach him. I stuck a stick down in there and could feel jello but no recovery.
Not a trophy shot.

Finally grew a little today. After taking a 55 & a 75 yarder I got a 270 yard shot. Here is the 55 yd shot.

They finally took the first cut on the hay field at the back of the property. I was walking down the edge of the field and saw a little grass moving as I went by a holem so I backed tracked and sat and waited. First a coon came out of one hole and went back in. Then about 10 yds further the hog finally came out for a look. 1st pic is the view where I took the shot from.

IMAG0351.jpg

Took a good head shot. There was a lot of quivering.

IMAG0353.jpg

Then I was moving to the north end of the property to check out a hill where I had seen several holes and sure enough there was a guy moving around. I was coming through some short pines and tall grass so there was no prone shot. I decided to use one of the little pine trees to shoot off of. The ghog had spooked a little and was looking around trying to figure out what was up. To late got um.

I took the shot from one of the pine trees at the top of the hill.

And finally. I got past the 200yard marker. This guy was at 270. Impact as pretty loud but I was afraid I might not find him becasue the beans are getting tall. After looking for a few I was ready to give up and there he was. Hit him right below the chin.

I shot him a little to the right of the the tree that is straight ahead.

made my weekend.

Great shot - I bet that 270 yarder felt a long way. Good job finding him too, sometimes that can be the tough part. I forget - what caliber is your AR?

.204 with 1-12 twist. I used some 32 grain vmax that I loaded to try out. I got them dialed in a little better yesterday before I headed out. Thanks guys.

Just busted this ghog with my rra pred pursuit and 55 gr vmax. I have shot one yote with this gun and this whistle pig and the v max left some to be desired as far as fur management!! Lasered @123yds ~shot today!!
IMAG0103.jpg

This hog was taken with my r15 .204 with 32g v max and Lasered @ 103 yds. Shot this past spring and both were taken off my back deck. We kill 5-6 every year just by going to the kitchen sink and looking out!!
