AR help

Where is the best place to look at ballistics for .223 5.56 and 6x45?

Also trying to decided barrel length between 16”, 18” and 20”. If I remember right (read it somewhere), it takes 19 or 20” to burn all the power in .223.

My son-in-law took my son to the range yesterday, where they tried out an AR that our gumsmith had for sale. Needless to say, I'm now going to build three.

I like this ballistics calculator the best. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about when you say "look at ballistics" or not.

JBM trajectory calculator

It's a little complicated to figure out the first time, but it's worth the effort to learn IMO. If you have a chrony, it should return VERY accurate information.

Is it better to have the forward assist or without?

What is the weight difference between the bull barrel, fluted and the standard barrel in an 18” ?

Trying to build one that is lite as possible, but wasn’t sure the weight differences.

Yes, but I ordered it through my gunsmith since it requires an FFL transfer.
I ordered a complete upper from Specialized Dynamics
Got a 3-9x40 Monrach

The hard part....waiting

One almost down and two more to go!!!!

Once you get it, you'll think "How did I get along with out one this long?". You are really going to enjoy that rifle.

edit: Nevermind, I see now you already ordered it.

I pulled the Monarch out of the closest and was reading up on it yesterday and realized that the BDC is setup more for the .270, .308, 30-06, etc. Also you can’t see the BDC or fine crosshairs at night without cranking up the light which is not how I like to hunt at night.

Let me backup a little for those of you that don’t know me or didn't read each of my post.

I hunt at night for hogs, yotes, bobcats, foxes, etc. I hunt in cutovers, timber (most), pipeline, fields, etc and my night shooting is 150yds or less, but I do hunt during the day and I limit my shots to 300 yds or less.

I’m a huge Nikon fan (before they became popular), but I don’t see anything gear towards my want, needs and/or price range.

A 3-9x40 will serve me well, but I’m looking for the following features (all-in-one):

Clarity is a must (Monarch level anyway)
Must hold Zero
Low light conditions (kill light set on low)
Would like it to have some type of BDC (geared towards 55 grainers)
Would like it to have some type of illuminated reticle (light up crosshairs and not a dot)
Hand turrets that are smooth in adjustment
Weight: 16oz or less
Kicker, cost around $700.00 or less

Is there such an animal or am I dreaming again????

I might be better off buying the M-223 for day, and illuminated mil dot for night hunting.

Comments and/or suggestions ?

Hmmm, out to about 500 yards a .223 and .308 should have pretty similar ballistics if you use bullets with similar BCs as the NATO loads.

You run any numbers thrugh the ballistic calculators yet to see how much they vary?

Those fine crosshairs at night may be a deal-breaker, though. Not sure you would ever need the BDC, how far are you shooting at night?

150yds or less (75 on average) at Night. The BDC is more for day hunting and targets at the range.

The crosshairs are the deal breaker for night hunting in low light. I was just hoping to find a scope that would work for both applications.

I do plan on buying a night vision scope next year (2012).

Burris makes a 1-4 scope with a "dot in donut" reticle, too, that's illuminated.

I don't own one, but the guys I talked to that do like it. I'm just not sure it would turn down low enough to actually be good at night.

I'd just put my EOTech on personally, that goes down so low you can't even see it. Lot of bucks for just night hunting, though.

If you're from Texas though, you're probably filthy rich.

Edit:

Hey, look at this. Illuminated 1-4 with a 5.56 BDC and a Fastfire.

Burris Fullfield II Lighted Reticle Rifle Scope 3-9x 40mm LRS Ballistic Plex Reticle Matte is very interesting and along the lines of what I’m looking for, just need to read up on it more.

I’ve considered EOTECH in something compatible with night vision. The problem is I stink at guessing hold over and distances.

Not everyone in Texas is rich, but I do play the lottery in hopes of one day being rich

Of what you have mentioned thus far, here are what my choices were. I believe a plain old 3-9x40 is just about perfect for calling type rifles and ARS.

The Burris 3-9x40 LRS you mentioned is a good one for the money. I bought 3 of them for $200 a pop. Decent glass, the euro style ocular bugs me(whole thing turns) and the center dot is a tad large when illuminated, but still money well spent:

As for night hunting, I went with a Trijicon 3-9x40 amber triangle. Very good night scope. Good glass. Repeatable. Paid a hair under $500 for it NIB.:

Wish it had raised turrets, but I still like it:

As for an all arounder, I went with a Leupy 3-9x40 Mark 2. It is very similar to the Mark AR. Have taken 1 deer and 1 yote with it so far. Both with 70gr TSXs. Mine seems to have exceptionally good glass, edge to edge clarity, and eye relief. Not sure if they all are as good, as I've really never compared it to any others. Have seen varying qualities before from the same manufacturers on the same models. Very happy with it so far.

I HIGHLY recommend Larue mounts. I can thank the members here for talking me into buying them:

MOST will say yes on that front.

I spent 9 hours today looking and comparing scopes side by side. Nikon Monarch really held it’s own until I put it up next to a Swarovski Z6. The Swarovski blew it’s doors off in clarity and price too ($2,300.00).

This wasn’t even close to the most expensive ones

Because of my eyes (astigmatism), The EOTECH would be unusable (looked blurry) so that is out.

Looked at a Leupold VXR and it wasn’t to bad but the red dot is small.

Didn’t see any Leupold MK 2 or 4’s

If the Nikon M-223 had a illuminated recticle and the turrets didn’t move so easy (read a lot of reviews & #1 complaint), I would defiantly buy one.

Out of all the scopes I looked at, not one gun shop, sporting good store, etc had a Weaver of any kind.
