AR help

I’m hoping to get my upper soon so I guess I better order my mags.

I’m ordering the magpul 20 round clip, but I wanted a 5 round clip specifically for hunting.

Not sure when, if ever that magpul will make/release a 5 round mag.

I’m trying to keep my AR 15 light as possible for hunting since I hike all over the country side, and wondering if there is much difference in weight between a 5 round SS mag and the magpul 20 round with the 5 round limiter.

Anyone know ?

Best (IYO) reliable 5 round mag ?

The difference in weight between the 5 and 20 round mag has more to do with the number of rounds than the size of the magazine...I doubt if you would notice the difference..

I have a couple of, I think, C Mags (they're down in my gun room) that are 5 rounders and one of the problems I've found using them is that lack of much to grab onto if you need to change them in a hurry...as they fit almost flush with the mag well...

If you have your 20rd mags blocked for only five rounds, I'd stick with those...

I’m a bolt and single action man mostly and being a hunter, not to worried about quick change out (I try to make every shot count).

Yeah, I’ve read a few reviews about the 5 rounds being a pain to remove.

Just trying to cut ounces where I can, but it’s not going to be worth it if it causes me other problems.

Another reason for a smaller mag is perception…..some folks see a larger clip and think the worst about you (stereotype you), if you know what I mean.

The only reasons for mainly going to AR:

1. Cheaper than most custom firearms, versatility of different uppers and parts availability
2. Can’t work my bolt fast enough when I have triples (predators) come in
3. My wife, son and I can use the same gun because of a collapsible stock

I have two 5 rounders one is a Bushmaster and it's the better one as it is a 10 round with a block I believe. I also have a flush one from Model 1 Sales and I rarely use it due to the fact it's not easy to pull it.
Even when I use 10/20 round magazines I seldom load more than 4-6 rounds unless I am heading out hunting all day walking and I will not return to the truck until dark thirty. I hunted predators for the first couple a years with archery tackle then switched to a TC Encore so I can identify with not being able to reload quick enough......

but it's not the end of the world if a few get away. If I really wanted to be that efficient I would occasionally use a shotgun ( will not happen) but that is another story.

the perception of the big mag hanging down is why I want a few shorty"s ,,,its just a bummer they cost more for less

I've picked up a couple of 10 rounders that don't look quite as menacing to non shooters...they are easier to handle, especially with gloves and still carry what I think I might need...

This is a nine round DPMS mag in my AR...

Nice OT,

Is that a bull barrel (heavy) ?

What scope and mount are you using?

That baby looks like it would weigh around 9 lbs and some change.

I bought a plumbcrazy lower,my upper will be an 18" middy, and with the mount & scope (not counting ammo/mag), It should weigh 6 lbs 9 oz. I will not know for sure until I actually receive the upper.

It's an early DPMS that I've used in a lot of action competitions and still as accurate as the day I got it...It will probably be the last AR that I get rid of, if ever...It's been painted and now looks like this..

In TX you don't have to limit yourself to 5 rounds.

To save weight, I'd stick with the magpul 20 round mags. Load however many you want. Have one in the gun with 5 or 8 to save weight, and have a couple of 20s fully loaded in case the zombies come out.

The zombies do come out in TX...

The AR is really working out for me and my family.

We are considering an 243 or 6.5 but are leaning towards the .243 because I currently don't reload and factory ammo can be found most any time and any where

it's my understanding that the 243 and/or 6.5 will have to have a different lower than the AR15 (AR 10), correct ?

Any clarification or guidance would be appreciated.

You are half right. If you mean 6.5 Grendel, that fits the AR15. A 243 Win would require an AR10.

Glad you like the AR, they are addictive!

The collapsible stock Is a plus for several different members in the family. Heck, the versatility is great and my groupings are more consistent too.

Best deal for an AR 10 lower ?

Thanks for the reply.
