whats the best all around cailber for varmit hunting, deer hunting and target shooting at some distances,,, and is ammo easy and cheap to get for it

Thier ain't a "best" all around caliber. For anything, for the applications you list the 243 or an AKA 6MM variant would be good, but then you may run into avalibility issues if you choose somthing that is to oddball. And thier ain't no ammo that is cheap anymore. A lot of folks will sya the .223 but it is magrinal, at best for deer sized game. The .25 cal/7MM , like the .243/6MM has several variants, is pretty good all around, but may have a few draw backs. Then you come to the .30 cal again many variants, ammo avalibility is ample for most of the more popular, but they tend to be to much for Coyotes and smaller deer. So it tend to be a personal choice, like pick up trucks, and hair color on women, ya make your pick and ya take your chances.

I have spent years explaining to my wife that there is NO BEST CALIBER for everything!

That is why I am always needing a new gun for this type of hunting and a new gun for that type of hunting.

That being said.. my first gun (as a youth) was a .243 Great caliber IF SHOTS ARE WELL PLACED and at reasonable (under 250/300yds)distances. If I did my part..It did its part. On varmints, predators, whitetail and antelope. (the stuff you described)

Ammo easy to find and lots of bullet choices. Easy to reload, etc.

But if it was the Perfect gun/caliber???? I wouldnt have a gun safe full of other guns that followed over the past 40yrs. (But the .243 is a good place to start your collection)

good luck and good shotin'

Naw, I would go with something like .243/6mm Rem. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I would definately say it is between the 243 or 25-06 if you were looking for a do it all gun. If you were going to do a little more varmint hunting I would get the 243 if you are going to do a little more deer or bigger game hunting I would bet the 25-06.
